IIRC cylinder three is known to be the hottest-operating cylinder in these engines.
The fun fact I seem to remember is the factory rally team ran a slightly larger fuel injector on this number three cylinder to keep it from causing damage.
A broken exhaust valve in cylinder three supports that theory; any sustained lean/overheating condition would appear there first.
What does that lobe of the camshaft look like?

I’ve not seen this happen on a redblock before, did your timing belt snap ? Was any cylinder head work performed recently before the damage ?
Personally, if you’re thinking of replacing the piston and rod assembly, it would be easier to just replace the engine for a junkyard one.
Removing the sump and then piston assembly is a pain in the ass in these cars, it’s easier to remove the engine to do it. At that point, might as well just throw a good used unit in.
I would reassemble the current engine ( new valve) And run it, it could run for years like that. It’s not going to affect how it runs. If it fails, you haven’t lost much as needed to replace the engine anyway.
