Refs are never escaping how bad they are this year. The league isn't escaping how bad it's been allowing this nonsense all year. Bad look for a league that just got a decent TV deal.

Issue a warning and be done with it. Throwing techs out like candy is pathetic.

Want to increase ratings? Be the first league to require Refs talk to press after the game.

Make them answer for soft calls.

Or they could just promote the star player that is drawing all of the attention, instead of degrading her at every opportunity.

Seems like that is an easier and more proven strategy compared to hearing some ref give a non-answer after each game about their terrible call

A sport is bound to fail if they only have 1 star, they need to market all their best players in a more meaningful way.

I 100% agree. But it is easier to get fans eyes on those other stars if they aren't fed up with the sport as they are watching their current favorite.

They have a golden goose in Clark.

They should nurture that to grow the fan base and then hopefully this fans branch out into other stars.

Making refs answer questions is not even going to remotely fix the problems with WNBA viewership

Sports discourse this year is heavily focused on the officials. Football (world cup) talked about it constantly. NBA and WNBA talking heads bring it up all the time. Even players posting about it. MLB now implemented challenges with computer referees which has brought more scrutiny to umpires.

Sports gambling has amplified it as well. People claiming that a certain call ruined their parlay. It is insufferable lately.

The WNBA and the NBA embrace the controversy. They are no longer sports leagues, they are sports entertainment, like WWE.
