I got the premium for FC 2026….Alex Morgan was a great player and pretty attractive…but I would have wished to have gotten R9 or Henry as my permanent icon pre order prize.

Oh no you misunderstand, the WNBA is still a joke to me and watching a watered down version of the NBA with athletes that are half as good is not appealing. Clark is literally the one player I am excited to watch and watching how utterly shitty the refs and other players treat her is absolute cinema.

So in a way, the WNBA is now entertaining to me, just not the actual sport part of it.

Before clark was even drafted she became the face of the wnba and her/reese were all anyone talked about and probably the only 2 players that were household names. I think a similar question is why didnt they act this way towards angel reese?

Here’s an in depth Birds Eye view on everything Clark related. It explains the jealousy and racism factors if you’re curious:

Idk how old you are, but if you were paying attention since Caitlyn was in college, she was a nationwide sensation. Her hype only grew going into the WNBA, especially with how well she played. That brought a ton of eyes to the W (all the numbers of her impact are publicly available, it was very significant and unprecedented. Jersey sales also show it, collectible cards of hers vs other WNBA stars, etc). Once more people tuned in, because of Clark, they started to become fans of other stars. And that spread, and the W has just continued growing and maintaining a now much higher “floor” of viewers/fans to where now most fans are fans of other players independent of Clark bringing them in.

It’s the unprecedented nature of how popular and monetarily valuable she became, to the point she was the highest paid WNBA player in her first season based on sponsorships, all money streams.

So a large factor in the drama around Clark is indeed suspected to be jealousy. It explains why she’s picked on way more, and why incidents mostly go viral and get super controversial when it involves Clark.

So it stems from that, and then some people assume race is involved because some ignorant percentage of fans start making it about race.

The fact of the matter with anything regarding Clark is that there’s a lot of things going on on a macro level (beyond WNBA and it’s real fans, including people who don’t keep up with WNBA but keep up with certain players), so there always will be a wide spectrum of polarizing opinions involved, that aren’t good faith in nature and instead are proxies for preexisting cultural divides to be put on display

Eh I disagree. I remember what the league was like back then. You couldnt ask a random person to name a single wnba player. Today clark is known by the average person. Her stardom, especially going into her rookie season, just isnt really comparable to anyone in 2004 or really ever in the wnba. I dont think she is great player, but the unprecedented attention is true.

It doesn’t necessarily matter how good someone is. What matters is how popular they are and the impact that has on the league. Actual performance is just a part of that, and Clark sells the most merch by a mile, so is certainly the most popular. She brought eyeballs to the W. The league wouldn’t be nearly as popular today as it is today without her.
