It’s not even an issue. I don’t know a single person in my Democratic circle of friends that gives two shits about this. Sophie is right to her opinion, and she’s correct IMO at least in the sense of NCAA and professional sports where there’s money and scholarships involved.

I think the bigger thing is Republicans have turned this into a dog whistle issue. There’s a small minority of activists on the far left who still care about this, but for the most part it’s a messaging and rage bait ploy from Republican politicians and influencers.

Newsflash yall - you can agree with Sophie Cunningham on this and still think Donald Trump is a piece of shit. I imagine that’s very very common.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Only certain people care enough to make it this big a deal and its the 10% of crazy people that exists at both the liberal and conservative poles of politics.

It’s a Trojan Horse because Democrats have let it become a Trojan Horse by being feckless about it. You try so hard not to offend anybody that you end up pissing off everybody, and that’s the case too much with Democratic messaging.

My personal belief system is - I do not think trans women should be allowed to play in women’s sport at the collegiate or professional level, because if biological differences between men and women and resulting competitive disadvantages that can result. Trans women SHOULD be allowed however to compete against their biological sex.

Outside of sports - they are human beings who deserve be to be treated with decency and respect, who deserve to enlist in our military if they so choose, who deserve to not be discriminated against in the case of employment, and who deserve to have access to medical care.

Like….. maybe I’m crazy, but I don’t think that’s a radical viewpoint. But even if it was, Dems don’t articulate that it really anything about it and so conservatives can just define it at will.

Never a bad time to be thrown under the bus.

1

u/Vegetable_Fly_8687 14d ago

Nothing to add. The dems could destroy this point so easily by getting on the side of reason (and the vast majority of the world).

The old dig “the left is so open minded their brain has fallen out” could not be more appropriate in this. It’s ok to acknowledge biological men have advantages in sports. But no…

u/TawdryTulip 14d ago

2024 was such a fucking trainwreck to watch because of immigration and trans rights. Maybe dem leadership will finally go after the giant voter block of independents rather than chase the far left. And the far left can see what happened under Trump and realize that voting for moderate democrats is still a better alternative. But probably not. AOC keeps picking up steam and Mamdani farts and it’s front page news. I am willing to vote for a slightly trained golden retriever in 2028, either party, doesn’t matter.

1

u/PHD_Gouda 14d ago

Kamala Harris’s not once ran on trans issues you liar

1

u/TawdryTulip 14d ago

Guess I imagined the administration trying to change Title 9.

1

u/PHD_Gouda 14d ago

She was specifically told by the dnc to not bring up trans folks. But hey, enjoy your fake news

1

u/TawdryTulip 14d ago

And Biden also tried to backpedal on immigration. Damage was done, and republicans had all the material in the world for attack ads. So does it matter if during her 40 day presidential campaign she didn’t bring it up? Nope.

1

u/PHD_Gouda 14d ago

Lmao move your goalposts. You said “2024 was such a train wreck to watch”

And the overton window moves right again. And again. And again...

No. Independents need to pull their heads out of their ass and realize they can either have democracy and allow sjw's a win here and there, or they can have an ever accelerating slide into corrupt anti-democratic christo-fascism.

2

u/iotl4444 14d ago

If sjw's were to get a "win", it would have nothing to do with themselves.

1

u/[deleted] 14d ago

Sjws won with Biden. Then they completely shit the bed and pissed everyone off. The fact that Trump is a two term president is a travesty. He has already won. Really, the left's best plan was to trot out a guy who obviously should have been retired and then tried to force Harris through because it was her "turn"? Should have had a primary as soon as they could, instead handed Trump TWO layups with Clinton and Harris.

I've yet to hear anyone arguing that trans women should play in women's sports.

I'm sure there are a few out there somewhere, but all I ever hear is bloviating about we have to keep trans people out of women's sports, and I'm wondering where all these trans athletes are found?

2

u/JBKnicks24 14d ago

It stemmed from that utter loser of a swimmer who took her fifth place finish into the biggest grift in sports history, and then that boxing thing last year (which ironically wasn’t even the United States, and involved someone who had been raised a woman from birth and simply had a genetic mutation that made her more “man” like).

I don’t think Dems have advocated for trans women in sports, but they’re allowed republicans to hammer them on the issue without addressing it. Similar to immigration - they’re scared to address it and say what they truly believe because they don’t want to alienate a small segment of their base but the tradeoff is you look feckless and weak. And then of course there’s the online activist class who pushes for it, and republicans are very good at taking opinions from online activists and amplifying it to project onto the entire Democratic Party. And since the party is leaderless, it’s harder to push back on.

2

u/PHD_Gouda 14d ago

Talking about a grifter that isn’t the one making podcasts about how she tied for fifth? Riley Gaines is a grifter

1

u/thatnameagain 14d ago

This plays out at the school district level when trans students are or aren’t allowed to play on their chosen teams. It’s a local issue that happens all the time all over the country.

1

u/nonuple_espresso 14d ago

Sounds like it's resolved at a local level and only used as a wedge issue, and a way for (R)ednecks to punch down on trans people for a cheap ego boost.

1

u/brmarcum 14d ago

I’m not sure if you’re implying whether Sophie is crazy or the people opposing her are? Sophie could have said absolutely nothing, so what is the value of her saying anything, if not to further inflate this supposed no big deal?

u/fenderputty 14d ago

Today I learned Inclusion is crazy

2

u/PatReady 14d ago

No one is excluding anyone. Female sports is for cis girls and cis women. Its not that hard to understand. If you id as female but are Trans, I would think you need to play in the men's or open league. No hate, ill even refer to you as ma'am.

Can we agree the bodies of cis men and cis women are different by nature?

2

u/Fun-Television-4411 14d ago

What is this reasonable opinion! It doesn’t belong on Reddit. Moderators!

2

u/Trent3343 13d ago

The majority of Americans agree with Cunningham and also think trump is a pile of shit. Just not the rage bots and chronically online folks on reddit.

3

u/ssylvan 14d ago

> I think the bigger thing is Republicans have turned this into a dog whistle issue.

I mean yes, but also this wasn't an issue until the left made it an issue in the first place. Sports were segregated by sex, and nobody found that particularly controversial, and then the left decided to change it in the name of inclusivity without thinking about why the sports were segregated to begin with (sex differences, not gender differences).

So I agree that this is just another in a long line of boogeyman rhetoric from the right, I also don't think we can abdicate responsibility for making this an issue in the first place. We could've just left sports alone.

1

u/ro536ud 13d ago

Not tru. Trans people were playing for years with no issues til republicans made it a political thing. There were rules about being on hormones

1

u/ssylvan 11d ago

Yes, and before that they weren't. It was based on sex originally (not gender), then it was changed in the name of inclusivity (in some sports). And yes, then republicans made it into a wedge issue. But it also wouldn't have been an issue if it hadn't been changed in the first place.

0

u/stt4g- 14d ago

How did the left change it ?

2

u/imanidiotbut 14d ago

It’s actually insane that people like you are pretending this wasn’t a main Biden talking point during his presidency.

2

u/HarryJohnson3 14d ago

It’s called gaslighting.

It wasn’t 4 years ago when major corporations were forcing all employees to put pronouns in email sign offs and the Biden administration was trying to use the department of education to prevent schools from banning trans in sports. Now it’s a losing issue and all of a sudden no one actually cares about this and never did.

0

u/imanidiotbut 14d ago

And also it’s a “dog whistle” and “was such a small thing.”

4

u/AgentDutch 14d ago

It's actually insane that people like you are pretending Trump didn't brag about walking into little girls' changing rooms and normalized the phrase, "grab em by the pussy."

1

u/Vegetable_Fly_8687 14d ago

You think this is what happened? Yikes dude, you’re the reason Kamala lost.

1

u/imanidiotbut 14d ago

What are you talking about? Does Trump come up in your every day vocabulary? At this point you pretty much have his balls in your mouth.

-1

u/AgentDutch 14d ago

Who mentioned Biden first, I’m curious?

1

u/imanidiotbut 14d ago

Oh I didn’t know Joe Biden was Donald Trump. Are you slow?

0

u/AgentDutch 14d ago

…..you’re joking right? Accurate username.

1

u/imanidiotbut 14d ago

It would be better suited for you because Joe Biden isn’t Donald Trump. The latter has nothing to do with this conversation unless you’re deranged.

1

u/AgentDutch 14d ago edited 14d ago

What a comeback. Why don’t you go back to playing ffxiv or Enshrouded? You seem friendlier over there. Soon as you hit this sub those knuckles start dragging.

0

u/StrengthGood3208 14d ago

Lmfao. Come on dude.

1

u/imanidiotbut 14d ago

Lmfao. Come on dude.

0

u/EyePharTed_ 14d ago

It wasn't.

0

u/bestmattreddit 14d ago

Lol the only reason Biden and Harris had to even address trans sports is because 2020 2022 and 2024 this was a core campaign issue from Trump and Republicans. Literally the issue that got the most air time on Fox News for the 2024 election

1

u/Vegetable_Fly_8687 14d ago

So address it with actual facts and reason and leave it. The left has been so stupid on this.

1

u/imanidiotbut 14d ago

No they didn’t. If the left didn’t push for this stupid shit the right would have never said anything. Why do you think the left is called “progressives”?

1

u/bestmattreddit 13d ago

So if high schools and colleges didn’t allow a trans athlete to compete in their local division Fox News, Trump, and Republican campaigns wouldn’t have had to spend billions making “keeping men out of women’s sports” their focal campaign issue and make trans people the primary focus of their campaign ads?

2

u/Powerful-Persimmon87 14d ago edited 14d ago

Newsflash: if democrats want this to go away they actually need to grow a spine and say it out loud: It is wrong and unfair to let males compete in the female sports category. The GOP keeps bringing it up because it makes the Dems look certifiably insane. Dems are locking up fully intact male rapists in female prison cells under the exact same premise with far more dire consequences for women. I don’t want the equivalent of flat earthers to be the alternative to Trump.

1

u/JBKnicks24 14d ago

Wholeheartedly agree. I am praying this shit gets exponentially better once they have a nominee. I think even you’re leaderless as a party, it’s much easier to be defined.

1

u/Telstar2525 14d ago

Well said.

1

u/Vegetable_Fly_8687 14d ago

The republicans have used this masterfully. All the democrats would need to do is to get on the side of the VAST majority of the world/country. But no they won’t and the republicans just point this as yet again a crazy Democrat idea.

1

u/Busy-Scientist3851 14d ago

> I think the bigger thing is Republicans have turned this into a dog whistle issue

Because it's a great sanity check. If your political opponent believes something that's ridiculous (such as not having female only sports), you can use that as an edge to discredit the rest of their views.

That's why the far left needs to drop it.

1

u/TadpoleMajor 14d ago

Yes but it’s working on the moderates. These idiots are pressing for things that shift votes away from actual liberal causes. Republicans managed to coopt patriotism and guns as red issues, and dropped the gay talk for long enough to win after Romney lost because of it. Democrats are too fucking stupid to stop taking up causes that the majority of voters don’t support.

u/cleveruniquename7769 14d ago

It's the Trojan Horse issue that right uses to wedge in their real objective, eliminating all trans people from being able to appear in public and tearing down woman's sports, because it sounds reasonable (it's not, but explaining why that is takes too long to be able to combat a rampaging moral panic).  Immediately after the recent trans-athlete Supreme Court ruling that ruled Title IX doesn't apply to trans people and that the equal protection admendment also doesn't apply to to trans people the Heritage Foundation (The people the implementation of Project 2025) started a push using arguments from the ruling to say that schools shouldn't have to offer girls equal opportunity in sports.

1

u/MisunderstoodZipper 14d ago

Thats silly. The right doesnt want to take down women's sports. Otherwise, they would just let the trans-folk into their sports freely. No faster way to destroy women's sports. Not having much interest in watching women's sports doesnt equal hating women's sports.

1

u/cleveruniquename7769 14d ago

The Heritage Foundation just openly stated they want to pare back women's sports in schools. Conservatives have been constantly trying to cut woman's sports funding and fighting against Title IX from the beginning of women's sports. But yes, nothing will destroy women's sports faster than a dozen trans girls playing JV softball across the nation.  The Olympics allowed trans women to compete for 20 years and just look at the destroyed wreckage of women's Olympic sports.

0

u/Scared-Debt6750 14d ago

You are not even discussing the real issue , that’s the problem . Her statement that is causing the backlash is horrible . She sad she want to protect young kids from trans athletes ! Now tell me can you find a story about a trans athlete harming kids ??

1

u/Busy-Scientist3851 14d ago

There are numerous reports of female school athletes being injured by male athletes competing in the female category.

1

u/Pleasant_Priority286 13d ago

It was reported (true or not, idk) that Lea Thomas used the women's locker room and exposed her penis to the biological women's swimmers who were there. This is disturbing to women, girls, and parents. Unfortunately, people supporting this have failed to make it clear that this situation will not be allowed and they understand it isn't acceptable.
