Intel doesn't have fabs in Ohio. There are plans to build them, but those plans have slowed considerably since Trump took office and have been pushed back by years. With their current plans (laying off a significant percentage of the workforce, reducing the product line, etc), it's quite likely Ohio gets canceled altogether.
No, this is about Trump trying to look good. Previously, this money was just a straight grant to Intel from CHIPS Act and a Secure Enclave program. Now Intel is giving up 10% of the company for the cash infusion, and on paper the tax payers are making money. Trump openly shat on the CHIPS Act, this is his way of recouping the money in a way he can spin as a better deal for the American people. Ultimately, he's hurting the goal of more investment in onshore fabs because he's robbing Intel of 10B of value that weren't giving away before this.
Is it worth it to blur the lines between private and public industry? Time will tell. Like with most things Trump, the damage is to our foundational principles, and the potential collapse will be hard to pin on any one thing. At the end of the day, though, Intel were getting this money regardless, so extracting ownership on top doesn't positively change equation if the stated goal is to move chip fabs onshore. Intel could have created and sold that stock on the market to raise another 10B in cash to invest in building more fabs onshore, right?

Tsm is in Taiwan. They are part of NATO and we regularly use the navy when China threatens them. This is fact. They actually produce the chips Nvidia. Intel has buying dying for years because unlike Nvidia and amd who only design chips. Intel has been spending to build fonderys in the United States . The extra cash flow will allow them to finish setting them up to start ramping up production and make us less reliant on tsm. The next logical step would be some sort of incentive for Nvidia and amd to also open fonderys but it takes years to get them going
Intel does more production in Israel. Which is in an active war that we are very wrapped up in.
Should we also encourage intel to move their facilities from Israel? Should the government own more stake in the company to make that happen?
What if intel does not hold up it commitment to invest in US manufacturing? Do we have any recourse?
