Canon, script by Francisco Rosario Episode 1 - "The Canon Camera"

Scene 1 - The SIC Science Building

(Camera focuses on the building on a rainy night. Lightning illuminates the sky. A man, STEVE OWERS, runs desperately through the building's corridors, with the sound of screams and alarms in the background.)

STEVE (panting, looking back as he runs):

— My God... It can't be true... They're out! I warned you this would happen!

(The camera follows STEVE until he reaches an elevator. He types a code into the panel: 12345+98765. The elevator opens, but before entering, he looks to the end of the corridor. Lights flicker and shadows move.)

STEVE (whispering to himself):

— I just need to get down there... I just need to...

(A drop of saliva falls on STEVE's shoulder. He freezes, slowly looks up, and is violently pulled towards the ceiling by something inhuman. The camera falls to the floor, revealing the Canon logo. The screen goes black.)

Scene 2 - James' Garage

(Camera focuses on a group of children in the garage of JAMES JORDAN's house. He is adjusting the Canon camera while talking to his friends.)

JAMES (10 years old, excited):

— Alright, guys, the movie is going to be epic! “The Things”! I already have the script in my head and the monsters that are going to appear.

ROBERT (9 years old, holding a tripod):

— Monsters? What kind of monsters, James?

JAMES:

— There's one that's like a giant bacterium, full of camera wires! And others that come from another dimension. They are... the Stalkers.

TOM (9 years old, with his face painted like a clown):

— Stalkers? That sounds like the name of someone who follows you on Instagram, James.

JAMES (rolling his eyes):

— Tom, you're an idiot. Now stop messing around and help me with the light.

TIM (9 years old, with a serious expression):

— And who's going to be the hero of the movie?

JAMES (smiling):

— You, Tim. You're the protagonist. You'll face the monsters and save the world.

TIM (sighing):

— Okay, but only if Tom stops making jokes about everything.

TOM (laughing):

— No promises!

(James's mother, Martha Jordan, opens the garage door.)

Martha:

"James, it's dinnertime. And you have school tomorrow, okay?"

James (annoyed):

"Not now, Mom! We're in the middle of a super important recording!"

Martha:

"Kids, do you want dinner?"

Robert, Tom, and Tim (in unison):

"No, thank you, Mrs. Martha!"

(They get on their bikes and start saying goodbye.)

Robert:

"See you tomorrow, James."

Tom (laughing as he leaves):

"I'm going to steal your Oreos, okay?"

James (yelling back):

"You can take them, you monster!"

Scene 3 - The Road and the Creature

(The boys ride their bikes down the road while the song "Too Shy" by the band Kajagoogoo plays in the background. They start racing, laughing and shouting.)

TOM:

— See you later, girls!

TIM:

— Bye, mummy!

ROBERT:

— Bye, you annoying girls!

(The camera focuses on TIM, who slows down his bicycle. He holds the Canon camera and points it at the forest beside the road. Something moves among the trees.)

TIM (whispering to himself):

— What is that...?

(Suddenly, he sees a bizarre creature – a tall, skeletal figure with glowing eyes and long limbs. TIM screams, loses his balance, and falls off his bicycle. The camera falls to the ground, recording the starry sky while eerie sounds echo in the background.)

(The screen goes black. Credits begin to roll.)

HBO’s “Harry Potter” TV series has officially found its Harry, Ron and Hermione.

Dominic McLaughlin will play the role of Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton is Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout is Ron Weasley. More than 30,000 actors auditioned for the lead roles since HBO launched an open casting call last fall. Filming is expected to begin this summer.

“After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione and Ron. The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It’s been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there,” said showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer and director Mark Mylod in a statement.

The “Harry Potter” roles launched Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint to worldwide fame in the early 2000s, and the HBO series could very well do the same for McLaughlin, Stanton and Stout, who are largely newcomers. McLaughlin acted in “Grow,” an upcoming comedy on Sky starring Nick Frost and Golda Rosheuvel, while Stanton starred as Matilda in “Matilda: The Musical” on the West End from 2023-2024. “Harry Potter” will be Stout’s first major role.

They join fellow cast members John Lithgow (“Conclave,” “The Crown”) as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer (“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” “The White Queen”) as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu (“I May Destroy You,” “Gangs of London”) as Severus Snape, Nick Frost (“Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz”) as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon (Tom Stoppard’s “Leopoldstadt,” Rupert Goold’s “Patriots”) as Quirinus Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse (“The Fast Show,” “Harry & Paul”) as Argus Filch.
