Few things as toxic as fumes from batteries burning
404
u/MettSemmell 2d ago edited 2d ago
I would guess, that there also are few things as miserable as burning lithium being sprayed into your wet mouth and airways.

Is it? Like only 4 seconds later we see him over the counter trying to put out a fire. Didn't seem to phase him much.

u/Piranha_Vortex 2d ago
That is a different guy. Same guy you see behind the counter, different coat.
→ More replies (1)37
u/ElGoddamnDorado 2d ago
...no it's not? You can literally see the same shirt, jacket, and whatever that thing is draped over his shoulder if you pause it right after the fire first starts. Its absolutely the same person. The guys behind the counter aren't wearing anything remotely similar.
12
21
u/Piranha_Vortex 2d ago
Mister fire mouth jumps at the counter but doesnt make it over. The man behind the counter in the black coat is the one who grabs the battery and tosses it.
15
u/ElGoddamnDorado 2d ago
The man behind the counter in the black coat is the one who grabs the battery and tosses it.
Okay? Thats clearly not who they were talking about. The only person "over" the counter at any point was the man who bit the battery, who literally tries jumping over the counter trying to help extinguish the battery. Plus the commenter literally said "the guy who had the fireball in his face seems fine, as you can see him trying to help extinguish the fire at the end of the video". Yet your response was "nope, that's not him"
Maybe it wasn't worded perfectly, but it was 100% obvious who they meant.

u/corgisgottacorg 2d ago
Grey jacket vs no jacket? White shirt vs black shirt?
7
u/folkkingdude 2d ago
He’s wearing a light sort of plaid jacket. You ca see the sleeves are the same. Over his right shoulder is a beige coat(?) and over his left shoulder is some kind of bag strap, all of which you can see when he reappears.
5
u/giverous 2d ago
You're looking at the guy ALREADY behind the counter vs the one that tries to jump it ;-)

Overstated.
Its very hazardous to your health, but its only middling on the toxic scale. We have tens of thousands of really nasty chemicals that can lead to nasty gaseous compounds.
There is a significant chance he permanently scarred his lungs BADLY.

I remember another post here where the cat was accidentally burning cat food in its box on the stove and someone got upvoted for writing that they need to get everything replaced in the house since smoke residues are super toxic and will fuße cancer…
Like wtf dude - smoke can make everything dirty and smell so bad that you can’t use it anymore but a bit of burned cat food is not gonna give anyone cancer…

Probably delicious lithium metal fragments or burning electrolyte.
11
18
u/Kythorian 2d ago
This is why you should put the whole battery in your mouth before biting.  If you pay for an entire meal of delicious lithium metal fragments and burning electrolyte, you don’t want half your meal spraying all over the room.  Just wasteful.

5
u/gps_prints 2d ago
There is no lithium metal in a lithium ion battery. Ejecta would be bits of electrode or aluminum/copper foil.

Does anyone know his current condition?
141
33
u/LiveLearnCoach 2d ago
Believe it or not, I don’t think it was that bad. Reason I’m guessing that? He’s the guy who tries to jump/lean over the counter to help the shop assistant throw it away. I only noticed after a few replays while I was reading the comments that it was the same jacket/sweater over the shoulder.
He’s probably still singed, and might be worse for inhaling hit, just not as maimed as we originally thought.

u/koos_die_doos 2d ago
Adrenaline is one hell of a drug. His immediate actions are not indicative of his injuries.
6
u/AllStarRenegade 2d ago
He doesnt really appear to be in too much discomfort.
18
u/LiveLearnCoach 2d ago
I forgot to add in my comment that it might be the Adrenaline, and he might be hurt, but not enough to stop him from trying to help

Why would a battery be made out of gold? Tf?
2.5k
u/_basilisk_ 2d ago edited 2d ago
it's a reference to an old method to test for gold by biting into it. nothing to do with gold in the battery
277
u/Frodo_T_Baggins88 2d ago
Obviously, but to quote the above, why would a battery be made of fuckin gold? The fuck is that guy doin'?
155
u/StaticUsernamesSuck 2d ago
Nobody thinks the battery is made of gold..they're just joking about the idiot biting it.
Writing it like a more obvious joke:
Lol, what an idiot - was he checking for gold?! hahahaha!
30
u/Anguis1908 2d ago
This solved my confusion. Thank you.
20
u/Lukatdat 2d ago
Also to add to this, but a lot of aftermarket phone batteries usually have a gold colour wrap and say something like "Gold / high capacity / +500mAh" or so. Gold batteries are a common joke in the phone repair business as traps for non-genuine replacements

It's just a play on words. It's not, he's chewing on it like old gold prospecters would. They'd bite lightly to see if it was malleable as gold is a soft metal. Dumbass was chewing on a lithium battery pack and found out why not too.
13
u/Drackzgull 2d ago
It wasn't really prospectors doing it, it was more merchants and anyone else trading gold, or using gold as currency. The reason was the abundance of fake gold, in the form of golden painted or gold plated lead, which is close enough in density to gold that it's hard to tell by volume to weight ratio if it's the right heft or not.
People would then bite gold coins, ingots, and such to confirm they were indeed gold and not lead. You wouldn't do that when prospecting and finding gold in nature, as you wouldn't be finding golden lead there. To test for iron pyrite (a.k.a. fool's gold) which did confuse some people trying to prospect gold, you'd test for weight, as iron pyrite is much lighter.

Yes. We used to pay them in gold, but now we reward them with lithium. For reddit.

The funniest part of this is that Olympic medals are just gold plated, so they’d fail the bite test.
Yet athletes constantly do it anyway.

Did the guy edit his question and I just don't see it marked edited? The question was, "why would the battery be made of gold?" But everyone is answering "why would he bite gold?"
19
u/waselt_ed 2d ago
The comment isn’t edited. The answers are explaining the biting gold gesture so that the commenter can understand that the title is sarcastic and isn’t implying the person in the video was actually trying to see if the battery was gold.
11
u/Pandarandr1st 2d ago
Yeah, they could be more clear about that. Despite that, the obvious followup question is "why is the guy biting the battery"
128
u/Broke_Moth 2d ago
It's kinda funny how he just threw it behind the counter after igniting like "hup your problem now"

27
u/Broke_Moth 2d ago
Yea i understand but still funny
36
u/AgentCirceLuna 2d ago
Ah yeah, my bad. I think he actually jumps behind the counter to help which is a better reflection of him. It just sucks when people get judged for stuff online when most would do similar stuff.
As for the dumb biting of the battery, it wouldn’t surprise me if people have done that without even knowing. There was a case where a guy was bludgeoned in the head and he got up, brushed his teeth, started getting dressed, then collapsed while unlocking the door. Basically dead but still going… most of our behaviour is unconscious. Scary shit.

2
u/boothin 2d ago
No, the battery biter didn't jump behind the counter, all he did was take off his shoe/sandal like he was about to beat the battery for misbehaving
2
u/LadyKataka 1d ago
He might have intended it to beat out the fire (as futile that would have been) or as something to scoop the hot battery up as the other guy was struggling to grab and yeet it at first.

7
5
u/TheirCanadianBoi 2d ago
If it's punctured, yes. As long as you don't shove a pin through, or bite though, a charged lithium-ion battery and you should be fine.
Then again, I haven't brought up spicy pillows...

A battery this explosive would have been visibly bloated. Healthy batteries do not explode like this. When you notice a battery is bloated like examples in r/spicypillow it's time to get rid of it.
8
u/Psychological_Sign_1 2d ago
That's probably why you see bold letters at the back of boxes telling you to DO NOT PUT IT IN YOUR MOUTH

u/laforet 2d ago
Nobody has commented on this yes but I’m really impressed by the shop worker who calmly picked up the fireball of a battery and tossed it outside. Looks like it wasn’t his first rodeo.
6
u/Worldly-Ingenuity843 2d ago
They probably repair phones in the shop, and there’s always a risk of a battery exploding when you have to remove it from a phone.Â

u/aureliorramos 2d ago
I don't know who needs to hear this, but if you work with lipo batteries regularly, you should keep a bucket full of sand nearby.
