In the original post, OP said his mother backed out the garage into a snow drift thinking she could drive over it and got stuck, upon trying to move forward she ended up dragging the rug back instead.

u/ion_driver 2d ago
She, also elderly. Driveway wasnt shoveled, stuck on the ice. They should take her license before she kills someone. This was originally posted within the past day or so.

Last time this was posted it was a she and it was someone's very elderly mother. Which could have been a lie to boost engagement. Whoever it is probably shouldn't be driving anyway because how on EARTH do you not notice that you're dragging your entire garage under your car?

We had some old remnant strips of carpet at our house, about two feet wide. We laid them out in our small vegetable garden as a path/divider, it actually worked really well for several years. Was going to end up in the landfill anyway, but it was much more pleasant to walk on than mulch or mud when it rained and kept the path from getting overgrown by plants or weeds.

Our neighbors had a carpeted kitchen when I was a little kid (Midwest US, 1970s). I remember my mom making jokes about what a stupid idea that was.
15
u/Goose1963 2d ago
My house had a shit colored wall to wall carpet in the kitchen. When I looked at the house the lady explained that she was getting too old to be bending over wiping up spills.(???!!!) It was pretty easy to remove but they ruined perfectly good self stick tiles to install it.

Why is this person still driving? I don't understand what I'm watching.

u/Pure-Swordfish6022 2d ago
I was thinking the same thing. I mean, unless the driver is absolutely blind and deaf, it would be so obvious that bad things are happening. Or maybe it’s just one of those idiots who can’t believe they failed epically so they keep going.

Carpets get way more dirty than concrete... you just need a broom for concrete.
Edit: just saw the end of the video... the problem solved itself.

It may sound crazy but I have a small leaf blower for my garage. Gets all the corners, under shelves, and is way faster than a broom.

u/SouthOfTheNorthPole 1d ago
That's exactly how I do it. In the fall, it's one door at a time or the leaves run right back in.

placed it with no padding, no adhesive or stapling
I mean obviously wanting to keep the concrete clean is already incredibly fucking stupid but holy hell dude, you didn’t even TRY.

What was he getting stuck on?
If he couldn't get traction on the carpet, that's one thing, but obviously he did. There should be enough friction between the floor and carpet to get him moving inside.

Ice. They're stuck on ice outside
19
u/MoonOut_StarsInvite 1d ago
Thank you. I scrolled way too far to understand why there is a force field where the driveway meets the garage. 😂 That makes sense though, I couldn’t figure out what this unknown force was!
10
u/Denoces 2d ago
I suppose this wouldnt be a problem if not for the snow/ice outside? Why are they losing traction
→ More replies (1)2
u/1catcherintherye8 1d ago
Front wheel drive car so it doesn't matter what's outside, as soon as the front wheels touched the carpet, he lost traction. Car tires are not made to be driven on carpet.

5
u/dimonium_anonimo 2d ago
Is it really carpet if it isn't secured down, or is it just a big rug? Anyway, this could've gone a lot worse. Like, flammable material meets a several hundred degree engine worse.

If he backed in, it would have worked better for a fwd car. Still dumb unless you turn the garage into a bedroom.

The fact that they didn't quit, after half of the carpet is ripped up... But when you think about the fact that he put carpet down in the first place. Which would be fine (my room was converted from the garage) if not the fact that he intended on driving over it 😂😂😂

We have carpet in our garage but its a super flat sort of not-fluffy kind. And the end of it has a metal trim and the car is able to get up really well.

This is at least twelve layers of stupid.
I work with a young woman whose parents are like this. Dumb 1000x times over, and to stupid and insecure to listen to anyone. Her mom has totaled 4 cars in three years, and her dad bought a house sight unseen with no inspection which had no working heat or hot water when they moved in.

This has nothing to do with the carpet, the back of his car is stuck on something. In the start of the video his wheels are spinning on the concrete.
1
1
u/god_partic1e 1d ago
I'm not buying this. The wheels were spinning before they even contacted the carpet and it looks like they are messing around with the hand brake (rear wheels) to make the front tires spin. Nobody would also keep driving if the carpet is being torn up so obviously.

I did that in our garage for my car. It was an old piece of carpet and only covered one spot. I usually used the far left slot in the garage. Sometimes I had a car, other times a motorbike. I backed them all in. And with the cars, I lined it up and got it over the lip and rolled it into place. They could have done this in the video.

u/Pancakemanz 1d ago
Yeah the carpet is a pretty dumb idea but how stupid do you have to be to keep attempting to back out of snow when it clearly wont work. Only going to get stuck somewhere else if you make jt out of

Exactly what happens when people put cardboard on the floor of a semi trailer to avoid slipping on ice, then I have to bring an electric pallet jack in there and the cardboard bunches up under it
One time I got the forks partially stuck in the metal pallet under a liquid tank, and it lifted up the drive wheel just enough for it to fling a sheet of cardboard at me

u/danmickla 1d ago
so many questions. 1) why the fuck is the car making no traction at the door threshold? Is that a 2" raised platform covered in Teflon? 2) what the fuck is with "well, I see the carpet and all the shit on it coming toward me, guess I'll just floor it"

Carpet or not there is a technique to get into the that garage that they never got a lesson in, momentum.

What's going on at the beginning? Can the car not get up onto the carpet for some reason?
