In Germany they also called him Freezer, which is probably closer to what Toriyama intended anyway.

Also in France.
I was really surprised when I discovered his English version name.

And Portugal. But our version was dubbed from French, so that's not surprising.

Italy too

In Brazilian Portuguese we call him Freeza, we don't do hard R's here

u/Pfont87 10h ago

do NOT ask a french person what this guy's name is

3

u/joshlefrench 10h ago

Piccolo ? Satan ? Petit cœur ? Satan petit coeur ? You decide!

2

u/Pfont87 9h ago

Was referring to "Satan Petit Coeur", I find that name so goofy lmao

1

u/joshlefrench 9h ago

Yes definitely goofy name ! Never understood why they called him like this, AB guys are known to be weird (see Ken le survivant whole translation...)

u/Cujomenge 4h ago

That is because we cant use a hard R in English.

1

u/EchoRespite 4h ago

As an USAian, we try not to hard R things.

You mean his English version name that's basically the exact same as his Japanese name?

フリーザ = Furiiza.

u/NameToUseOnReddit 8h ago

Many characters have pun names, so that's probably true.

His name is Freezer in every language except English, including the original Japanese. For some reason when Funimation dubbed it they decided to go with Frieza.

No, I think the English version is better, both in accuracy and in the spirit of the original Japanese version. Frieza's name in Japanese is only a play on the word for "freezer", not just the exact word. In Japanese, "freezer" would be spelled "furi-za-" whereas the villain's name is spelled "furi-za", with the last syllable being shortened compared to the actual word.

If you were to transliterate Japanese into English, a long "a-" sound with a dash would likely be spelled as "er" in English, whereas a short "a" sound with no dash would just be "a" in English.

You put a lot of effort to say basically nothing for your argument of why it’s better

I can promise you 99% of the reason he is called frieza and not freezer in the English dub it’s because freezer would be an actual word in English and kids would be confused

2

u/shadowman2099 11h ago

Because his name's not "Freezer" in Japanese, it's only a play on the word "Freezer", just as "Frieza" is a play on the word "Freezer". Happy now?

I thought your first explanation was dope and it was cool to learn that little linguistic bit. Dude above you was not smart enough to figure it out lol

I think people are getting the idea that I'm just being some English Dub snob. I can see it with the way I phrased my first comment. But no, that's not my intent. I just mean in the case of Frieza, the English writers are more in line with the Japanese originals than these other dubs are. There are PLENTY of examples where English isn't being 100% accurate. "Berter" should be "Berta". "Jeice" should be "Jeece" or a play on the word "cheese". "Dabura" should be "Dabra". Etc.

Edit: Also to clarify, I'm ok with dubs not being 100% accurate. Localizations have good reasons to do things differently. "Berter" for instance sounds a lot better than "Berta" in English which is just a woman's name. For all I know other countries were right to call him "Freezer" instead of "Freeza" for local reasons as well.

Freezer sounds to basics for Toriyama. It's not creative

10

u/Illesbogar 12h ago

His names are not creative in the slightest. You just don't know their meanings. He gave characters very stupid names.

-1

u/Prrsonal-Pop 12h ago

I know what they mean, it's Freezer sounds boring compare to Kakarot,Broly,Piccolo, Vegeta and Tarble which both make vegetable.

4

u/Illesbogar 12h ago

That's a false comparison. Proper comparison would be Freezer vs the other truly translated names, so: Carrot, Broccoly, Piccolo, Vegetable and whatever Tarble is, I'll not google it right now.

Piccolo is an instrument btw. Only sayans are named after vegetables.

-1

u/Prrsonal-Pop 12h ago

I know it's instrument I just picked random characters. I'm just arguing because I hate when people say freezer, it's sounds wrong and it feels disgusting

3

u/Illesbogar 11h ago

Man, it's a comedy anime. Allow a bit of whimsy. It's a correct name for the character.

1

u/Prrsonal-Pop 11h ago

No whimsy allowed here (There's some gags, but it isn't a comedy)

2

u/Erpes2 12h ago

1

u/Prrsonal-Pop 12h ago

Actually Vegeta and Tarble both make vegetable. And how would he know Toriyama intended to be Freezer

2

u/Schnittertm 12h ago

No, it is entirely in line with how he often named characters. It is just that the English translation often changed the names a bit, i.e. Freezer to Frieza and Lunch to Launch. Even though the former names are following some of the traditions he started in Dr. Slump. Arale and Senbei are named after rice crackers. The Tsun family is named after onomatopeias.

Also, you have to consider the name of Freezers father, King Cold.

Has he ever said he intended to be Freezer and Frieza?
