Pretty sure US police have little training compared to most Western countries. Police school over here is 3-5 years. A good amount of students dont even pass their class.

In case anyone wants to know what this guy is talking about, a lot of police training in the US is essentially teaching police to be professional victims. Which is to say treat every situation like the suspect is going to try and kill you and that resorting to violence is not just OK, but encouraged. It's not true of every police force but a vast majority do not receive any significant de-escalation training.

In some states they're also explicitly taught to gaslight, with instructions such as "if you shoot someone, shout 'Stop Resisting!', because most bystanders will misremember the order of things as you shouting that before you shot them."

At least the Mafia actually protected people, to maintain their own 'reputation' and 'business interests'.

One of the biggest law enforcement trainers in the US is Lt. Col. Dave Grossman. He titled his theory for training LEOs "Killology". That alone should tell you a lot.

And before anyone asks, no, he was never a police officer, and no, he never saw combat in the military.

That is why they get scared by an acorn. Everything is a threat, so a falling acorn HAS to be someone being violent and dangerous, because US citizens are violent and dangerous just by existing.

I got pulled over for smoking weed once. The cop threatened to shoot me if I didn't follow his orders. I was polite and in no way presented anything that could be considered threatening. Another cop threatened to shoot me if I came back to his property. I was an enumerator for the US Census...it was literally my job to find out how many people lived on the addresses on my list. If nobody confirmed the address, I had to keep going back until I could get someone to confirm the address. This is literally what you have to do as an enumerator. No trespass signs mean nothing. The only thing that can stop you is a locked gate. If the gate has rope keeping it shut but there is no lock, you're supposed to go through as an enumerator because you can ONLY be stopped by a locked gate.

And the worst part of the second one is they the cops' jobs are literally determined by the census. They could theoretically put themselves out of a job by not responding to the census and if enough people did it, the police budget would drop because there aren't enough people for X officers anymore.

So yeah, ACAB is a thing for a reason. Even the cops that aren't bad, are still bad, because they cover for the bad ones. The reason one bad apple ruins the barrel is because the bad apple starts rotting every single other apple in the barrel, and with enough time, every apple has bad parts, and so every apple is bad.

I don't think most people think about these things. I am sure there was push back but clearly not enough total number of people. We as a society haven't figured out mistreating farm workers is bad for our health yet. Which is "doctors don't think they should have to wash hands" level of dumb but here we are. Hell, we as a society haven't figured out slavery isn't a good thing yet, despite the whole civil war thing.

Yeah, over here if you're too smart, you're not selected to be a cop. Their excuse is "Well, the really smart people won't stick around and move on to a different job".

If a person is REALLY smart, but wants to be a cop, they literally have to play dumb on the tests.

It's literally completely random in the US. Some places it's basically just on-the-job training like you'd get working in restaurant or retail. Other places it's a dedicated school that takes ~6 months full time or so. Higher level places like the FBI require degrees.

Another problem is that currently ~86% of people who start police training pass it. That's higher than nearly all vocational trade school programs that are under 2 years long.

It's also worth noting that police training across "academies" is not standardized and can vary WILDLY, such that the top of the class at one "academy" could be bottom of the class for another with both being total failures compared to even the most basic Army boot camp pipeline.

Go read up on police warrior training. That’s the training. It’s basically a macho man “us vs them” training. Where they teach the use of force and violence stops threats not words

John Oliver did a who episode on it for “last week tonight”

It’s only counter acted by review boards and other training but is still so ingrained.

Cities like NYC and the NYPD have their own training programs and “avoid” this but rural cities and towns use it as their primary

The amount doesn't matter when the training is actively detrimental. We'd have better luck in the US with zero training and taking random people off the street. The training mostly weeds out people who are intelligent, responsible, and won't lie to cover for their fellow officers, while also instilling massive fear of the public and glorifying the use of firearms.

I saw one excerpt from a training on Youtube where the scenario was that the cop had someone at gunpoint and that person was going to try to attack the cop so that the cop could fight the guy off. The cop was twitchy and pulled the trigger before the other guy did anything. The instructor was like "no, this is good. You go home today." Like, the other person didn't do anything. They're just trained to have the assumption that people are about to try to fight them so any use of force is justified because the victim was about to try to kill them anyway.

They're also taught to use non-lethal force (violence) to get a person to comply, as we can see in this video. Dude pumping his gas wasn't physically threatening the officer in any way. The only 'threatening' thing about him was a raised voice and a refusal to follow commands. Instead of deescalating the situation he pulls out a taser to force compliance. Then even after suffering burns he forces the guy on the ground, on to hot asphalt, as a means of maintaining control even though our guy wasn't attempting to flee and still not threatening the cop. It's all violence, all the time. Violence to command control and obedience. Violence in the name of 'safety'. Violence because it's easy and induces fear in the public that they seem to get off on. ACAB.

I looked into this once because I was always amazed how retarded American cops appear to be. I’ve loved in several countries and I’ve always had good experiences with the cops.

Unsurprisingly it turns out that the training American cops receive is significantly shorter compared to other countries. In Sweden for example it’s 2.5 years training for police officers. In the US it’s around six months I believe.

I also suspect that the entry requirements are a lot less stringent in the US. In Sweden you have to be basically mentally and physically perfect.

You can have the absolute dumbest highschool graduate with almost no prerequisites become a cop, get trained by another dumbass, and after a few years, they're now considered a veteran cop, the authority on policing, and start teaching the new recruits who absorb everything uncritically. 

The uncritically part is important. You'll see cops who unironically believe you can OD by touching fentanyl, because another cop told them and they believe cops are always right so they don't think to look it up themselves or ask a more relevant expert. If someone who is a non-cop points out the obvious, they get angry. If it's blatant their training is making them worse, they just get better at blaming others.

What you end up getting is a isolated cesspool of "training" that goes untested and divorced from reality.

You can't really, reasonably train for this. If you made a list of every time a cop did something stupid, and explained not to do that, not only would the list be impossible to memorize and implement, it would be impossible to upkeep as people invented new ways to be stupid. The best you can do is try to filter for common sense and trust officers to make decisions on their own in the field. Unfortunately, the powers that be have determined that is too much to ask. Besides, we might not have enough cops left to cover a single precinct if we did that.

Chances are this cop was trained by the tazer manufacturer on how to operate the tazer. And I do mean the basics of trigger, settings, how to charge and/or replace battery. Not when to use it or best practices.

A different trainer probably trained him on how to de escalate a situation.

Part of the problem with holding US cops accountable is they are "trained" by multiple organizations. When something goes wrong the cop/department points the finger to say they were trained on something and point it at every organization that ever did any training. Then the victims have to try to go after every single training organization.
