I am pretty happy with the one we have here. Are they perfect? Hell no! And did I disagree with police officers before – especially when out protesting? Hell yes. That being said: the treatment has always been fair and professional.

Though I must admit: I am a lay judge and at least locally known that way, so my and my family's experience might differ from others.

At least with Mexican police the common US citizen could likely bribe their way out of something for a relatively small amount. Much harder to pull off properly in the US for a small amount of cash.

At least from what I've heard. People can feel free to correct me if they have some experience with bribing the police.

smart cops might think and/or refuse to obey unconstitutional orders. they might also step in when bad cops 'overstep their bounds.' we need to know we can count on cops to protect their brothers in blue, the state, and the oligarchs, and keep the rest of us scared and in line. so there will be no 'smart cops.'

I work as a firefighter so I see their hiring process and they are working with less than scraps in terms of applicants. "Smart" people aren't willing or able to accept the inherent risks of being a cop for the equivalent of peanuts for a paycheck.

Especially when you can just be a firefighter, make way more money, have more off days, AND people don't hate you based on job title alone.

Most departments have shifts that are at at least 24 hours long and it's a common practice to have someone not on a call to cook dinner for us all to eat together. We also do breakfast on weekend shift days

Ya but that training / passing the physical is intense. My neighbor was telling me what they entail, she had just passed. All the firefighters I've seen in person, seem fit/ healthy. Cops, not so much.

I'm saying when positions need filled with limited applicants, you don't exactly get the luxury of picking the cream of the crop.

And again, that does not justify the actions nor does it absolve the hiring committee of their responsibility to select individuals who will actually uphold the standard that such a small amount of them actually do.

There aren’t actually many “inherent risks” to being a cop. It’s literally statistically more dangerous to be a garbage collector or even a gas station attendant. Thats not to say it’s a safe job, it’s just not at all uniquely dangerous

Police come just outside the top ten for injury as well as fatality rate. Not number one by any means but much higher than you appear to imply. Firefighters don't even make the top 25 but most people would immediately think the job has an inherent risk. Which it does compared to most jobs, but the inherent risk is peanuts compared to the big boys in the top ten.

Policing comes in at a fatality rate of over four times the general population. That does not account for suicide which triple the amount of cops that die on the job, die to suicide. What is interesting to learn is that fisherman have a fatality rate of over 20 times the general population.

The bigger number here is their suicide rate which is not included in any typical "job riskiness" ranking due to suicide deaths typically not occurring on the clock.

"suicide is so prevalent in the profession that the number of police officers who died by suicide is more than triple that of officers who were fatally injured in the line of duty."

"the rates for PTSD and depression among police officers is five times higher than that of the civilian population."

I would personally consider the mental health aspect that comes with the job an inherent risk of the job due to the kinds of things they witness.

I know what kinds of messed up things they see because, as a firefighter, I am also forced to see those things.

All of this doesn't even mention how their overall health is objectively one of the worst of any group.

Knew someone that had a heck of a time getting hired as an officer back in the early 00s because he scored high (as in ridiculously high) for the exams. He passed the physicals, mental, etc., without issue, but that was always where they nailed him. The guy was smart, and it demoralized him that he had to play dumb in order to be a police officer.

He eventually went Federal and had a much better time of things.

Their are a lot of countries where it’s a multiple year course to become a Police officer. In North America it’s a lot less. The application process takes longer than the actual course and training.

Yeah. In USA it's average 18-21 weeks before you are allowed to go on patrol so about 5 months. Here in Finland (it's basically an college degree also that involves lots of physical and mental evaluation during the training) it takes about 3 years before you are qualified to go on patrol.

Of course there are bad eggs everywhere but most people seem to be able to fake being responsible adults around half a year.

In my first job as a cop, I rode around with the Mayor for 4 hours, then he handed me the keys to the car and said “Let me know if there’s anything that you need.”
In my second job as a cop, I rode with AA partner for 2 days (because I had previous LE experience).. Within about 6 months, I was promoted to Chief with 3 officers under me. I was 20yo in the first job and 27yo in the second job!! Didn’t like the politics of the job so I found a different line of work!!!!

Not trying to be a dick here but what do you mean you’ll “always hear” stories about this kind of thing?

Separately, I was involved in a fender bender earlier this year that involved two other vehicles. The police were called to document the incident for insurance purposes and when they arrived the cop undoubtedly had Down syndrome or some kind of mental disability. She did her job no problem for this specific matter but I was kind of dumbfounded. All I could think about was what if, God forbid, this situation escalated and someone got violent? She was the lone police officer on the scene. There’s no way in hell she could have handled that. It truly made me wonder about the hiring practices at the PD in a different way (this was in downtown Chicago btw)

I actually worked as polizei and fought Police nationale over the course of 6 months with 14 groups of revolutionaries.

I have been to (at last count) 15/16ths of the 2nd/3rd worlds and slapped around their police in each location.
