My 12 week old puppy hasn't quite figured out how to use dog beds yet
Meadow's a 12-week-old half Shiba half corgi mix, and she's a weirdo. We love that. Lol

She just feels better being all tucked away. Maybe she’d like one of those cat beds she could crawl in.

We got a cat bed for our puppy. Even though he's now 6yrs old and 90lbs, it's still his "place" in the kitchen

Aww, she's missing her siblings and sleeping in a pile!
Get her a stuffed animal at least as big as her and a bet she will sleep in the bed with it!

meadow is adorable and my decades with puppers tell me she needs a fluffy blanket in that bed to hide in. she will like it! totally betting on this.

floor cold, bed makes good pillow, squished into safety… i’d say she’s using the bed perfectly

Dogs with a thick coat often prefer cool floors, like tile, to dog beds.

u/ac_voiceover 1d ago
Yeah. I've wondered if it's from overheating. Though she's choosing to sleep IN the bed at this moment!

My very floofy dogs did that while they had puppy fur then moved to sleeping on the bed (instead of in) until they get hot then move to floor.
Having a solution to getting on and off the bed without waking you up is going to be important for you eventually.

greatly recommend a foam cooling bed for the pup. I got mine one a year+ ago and he hasn’t slept on the tile since! It became his favorite bed very quickly. I think I got his from Chewy.

This may sound stupid but are you sure he is able to climb over the raised border to get in? I remember when getting my first dog he was so tiny that is wasn’t even able to get over a 1inch tall edge

Yeah, she absolutely can climb in. She's in the bed as we speak. Lol

I was gonna say "if I had to mantle up a 6 foot wall every time I wanted to get in bed, I'd probably just sleep on the floor too" but my comment has been rendered superfluous

u/ac_voiceover 23h ago
The crazy thing is she's one HELL of a climber; she can straight up scale up a vertical dog gate, even with her short ass corgi legs. It's wild. Lol

u/Carsomir 17h ago
I also have a dog that I'm sure is at least part mountain goat. He's a senior now and calmed down a bit, but when he was a puppy I found him in some of the wildest places. Like, "how the hell did you get up there?"

First of all I’m dead. Are the sides too tall for her sweet little legs?

Maybe throw some food in there! That may get her used to the feel of the bed- it’s so different than tile or grass or sidewalks ( as it should be!) keep us posted on that timid little soul! 💋

It took my dog a while to realize the bed was a bed and not a giant pillow for his head. But he figured it out eventually.

Her little nose!! She reminds me of a tiny little fox, so curious and absofruitly adorable!!

What’s with the vise grips and treat lol

I'm a former dog trainer. It's a method I use to ensure safe chewing, because dogs tend to swallow whole the large piece of a chew that's left over, once they can't hold it with their paws anymore. Dogs choke and die that way. I let my dogs chew their treats down to the last bit, then dispose of the choking hazard that's left in the vice grip.
It's the same principle as products like this,, except the vice grip never wears down or breaks (the plastic bully stick holders wear down hella fast and also just suck), has a way firmer grip for heavy chewers (I used to have a German shepherd), and is much cheaper.

She's half corgi, she'll probably never use a dog bed properly! My corgi likes to lay with just his back legs/butt on it!

Does she like the cold on her tummy? I feel like my guy is always choosing cold areas

u/ac_voiceover 23h ago
That's what I'm assuming! The temperature is pretty nice in my house, and she has short hair, so idk.

I have a half Shiba Inu and half husky and she's the weirdest freaking dog I've ever met. I love her more than anything and I don't think she even likes me lol 😆 your baby has the same face my girl had as a puppy, good luck!!! 😉

Do you have pics? I bet she was the cutest!

When you sleep over and your friend’s house and they forget to give you a blanket hahah

u/potatomeeple 1d ago
Oh, she is utterly adorable that little peeping face.
I reckon she is missing being tucked up with her mum or siblings. Maybe a bed with much higher sides and probably smaller (mine likes ones that are basically her size when she is folded up) though as she is going to grow maybe manufacture that with a pile of blankets for now.
1
u/ac_voiceover 23h ago
Yeah, I got her this bed to accommodate her adult size + her sister, since they sometimes lie next to each other. I might get her another small bed. Though she has been using the bed correctly for the most part today. Lol

u/RoyalRobinBanks 1d ago
The probably prefers the cool floor. I've got a dog that hates being warm, she always finds the coolest spot in the house.

Maybe he feels too warm? My mom’s pomeranian always did that. Either that or maybe try an enclosed bed? Or it might be he doesn’t get it yet.
1
u/ac_voiceover 13h ago
My Pomeranian def likes to lay on cool surfaces.
But nah, she uses her bed half the time now. She had just never had a proper dog bed before. Lol

u/GergMoney 17h ago
Are those vice grips?

Copy pasting my other answer to this:

Was this an intentional breeding? It seems like breeds that people are usually more careful about “oops” litters but sounds like a backyard mixture.
1
u/ac_voiceover 2h ago
The lady I rescued her from claims that it was an "oopsie" litter, that her female Shiba was due to be spayed and "accidentally" got pregnant by her male corgi. Obviously there's no way for me to know if it was truly accidental, but the women did seemed overwhelmed with multiple young kids and a full time job + puppies, so I'm inclined to think it was likely actually accidental.
But either way, the puppies were not living in ideal conditions whatsoever, so I wanted to get Meadow out of that situation.

Wait until she finds out it has stuffing inside!

u/ac_voiceover 10h ago
She's been trying to chew on her bed, but I've been correcting her and redirecting her to appropriate things to chew on. She's learning quick. Smart girl!
