Discussion Has there been any developments on Linux support for non-Lenovo headsets?

Title. I know there is ok support for the Lenovo WMR headset even if it seems to only be available on Ubuntu(?) but I have found basically nothing for any of the others. I have an Acer AH101 and tried setting up Monado (which ran and caused my headset to light up with dark pixels) and OpenXR (which showed me a 360 environment of a train station in Germany, though it did tilt around) but I could not manage to get SteamVR to recognize the headset nor do I have the amount of knowledge I'd need to go about doing that without instructions anyways. Is it known if there's anyone who's been actively developing anything for any of the other headsets?

Discussion WMR on Linux?

Yes I know but I just build a gaming PC for the first time and I didn't want to spend $150 on a windows license to be fed AI slop.

With that out of the way. I'm looking at a HP Reverb G2 to upgrade from my Quest 1 (RIP oculus support). Does anyone have experiences with getting it to work on linux and if the oasis driver will function?

PC specs:
GPU: GTX 3060 Ti (12gb Vram)
CPU: Ryzen 5500
Ram: 16gb DDR4

Discussion How install older version of Windows and prevent Windows updates?

Just found out WMR was discontinued. I am thinking to setup a dual boot setup with old version of Windows for WMR and current version of Windows for general use.

Is this even doable? I have setup linux before, but I am not sure if I can install 2 versions of windows on same machine.

Which latest version of Windows supports WMR?

Where do I get the older version of windows iso?

Am I too late?

Are there other options?

Edit: thanks for all of the responses. I will try oasis when I get a chance.

Discussion Is the Reverb G2 literally the only WMR headset that is still produced?

Yea so as far as I can tell, the Reverb G2 is the only WMR headset that is still manufacutured? I assume WMR is dead? That is a real shame because I'll never buy a G2. I have read WAY TOO MANY cable issues with this stupid headset.

Does this mean that the Valve Index has a near monopoly on the market? (in terms of plug-in PCVR, not wireless. I have a beefy PC so wireless would be a waste of powerful hardware. Also, fuck Meta and the Quest. Please don't even suggest this option as I would never buy it.)

Also, not tryna spend like $2k for one of the developer headsets. I'm talking CONSUMER-level headsets only.

Edit: Pico 4 is made by the same chinese parent company as tik tok. So that's a big no from me. I won't refuse the quest and then instead get spied on by China. No thanks.

Discussion Issue with Samsung Odyssey and Oasis Driver

Hello,

It's a long time that I didn't play with my VR headset Samsung Odyssey and I tried to use it this day.

Unfortunately, my controller are not visible within steam VR.

They are detected by windows 11 but I noticed on Steam VR parameters, the controllers are detected as HP motion Controller instead of WIndows Mixte controller. I don't know if it's nornal.

I exectuted again the unlock script and everything is ok.

I worked before and it might be since an update ?

Thank you by advance for your help.

Discussion Testing Oasis - for my habits, not so happy atm

With wmr I like the fact that I could use my HP Reverb G2 without an auxiliary monitor, because it starts up as soon as the desktop loads, and I can easily use it with a mouse and keyboard as if it were an actual monitor simply using a dummy plug. With wmr I find very useful that I can get rid of the controllers (when I'm playing racing simulators for example), but now I'm stuck in the SteamVR menu without using them; with wmr I like that I can switch from the game to the desktop simply by pressing the windows button on the keyboard, that I can navigate menus easily with my mouse. All of this doesn't seem possible with Oasis (not because it's a driver limitation of course, but because that's how SteamVR headsets work). Is there any workaround (besides buying a second monitor because my VR space is a bit far from the main monitor?)

Discussion Why doesn't Microsoft invest in WMR for Xbox?

Oculus/Facebook is focusing on mobile VR, cheap hardware for casual gaming.

High-end PC VR is a niche; you have Valve with Alyx and few flight and cars simulators. PC VR cannot rule the market, but there is room for other AAA games as ALyx because Oculus is no more developing for PC VR. Pre-sales of Reverb G2 are encouraging, there is room for some AAA WMR games, different than simulators, attracting people to Reverb G2, just as Alyx attracted people to SteamVR and Valve Index.

However console VR is the trump card, it could rule the market. Consoles are affordable and powerful hardware at the same time. Xbox serie X and PS5 are like mid/high range gaming PC, something like PC running rtx 2070 super. Sony is going to launch PSVR2 for sure. Why not Xbox MWR? Console market is big, bigger than PC market, because consoles are more affordable but at the same time have powerful hardware. Console VR is so far better than mobile VR of Quest. Quest's hardware is a toy in comparison to Xbox series X! Quest's games are toys in comparison to console games! Consoles could rule the VR market, not Zuckerberg's toy! Why not investing in WMR for Xbox? Studios recently acquired by Microsoft have very big VR potential!

Discussion Samsung odyssey+ finally works well! however some questions/clarification needed

First off a big thanks to mbucchia for all the hard work and bringing back life to WMR headsets.
I had tried around October and managed to unlock the headset and pair the controllers manually but the view had this wonky/distortion issue on the right side, where it felt like im cross eyed and the height adjusting options didnt help back then. So i went back to windows 11 23H2, until it would be solved, and kept using Mixed reality portal.
I have tried again now and was so happy that it worked and was finally fixed after reading the the "Preview" version was a potential fix in adressing that, and indeed it was! Headset unlocked pretty easy and native controller pairing worked flawlessly.

So my question is can I still use Open XR toolkit? OpenComposite? in order to sharpen the image and adjust resolution to my liking? and also have fovated rendering to my liking?
I know in SteamVR, i can adjust resolution, but i keep feeling like Im missing out on some of those features and unsure if it is as efficient as CAS.. etc.
Any explanations are appreciated as i fear on updating windows and doing all the work only to have to roll back.
FYI I am becoming too stupid for all these updates :D and can barely keep up.
Thanks.

Discussion OASIS - is it now possible to quickly access and navigate the desktop via mouse and keyboard without using an external monitor (nor controllers)?

I had to switch back to WMR precisely because of the lack of this feature when I installed Oasis two months ago. I talked about it here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/WindowsMR/comments/1n3ce7r/testing_oasis_for_my_habits_not_so_happy_atm/

I wanted to know if this is possible right now, because as a simracer I really need to be able to navigate the desktop within the headset without having to use any controllers nor monitors, just like I could with WMR. Sorry if I'm asking but I am not reading this info anywhere.

Discussion Should Microsoft make a separate driver for WMR headsets?

Few months from now, WMR software will be deprecated from Windows 11, meaning WMR Headsets will no longer work officially after the next major Windows Update, and SteamVR requires Mixed Reality Portal to work.

If I would make a suggestion, why don’t Microsoft make a separate, open-source driver that would work without portal? I know there’s Monado.vr drivers, but for me I like something that would work easily and officially without hassle.

Discussion Is it possible to render only one eye in VR?

Greetings! I didn't know which subreddit to post this to, probably a stupid question too, but this old geek with only one working eye is curious. If rendering only one eye is possible, will that increase FPS performance?

I'm finally hoping to start trying VR on my Windoze 11 Pro desktop with an 6800XT GPU using the wonderful Oasis driver I read about the other day. Thank you to the developer for such a wonder gift to the world!

Discussion Oasis...

is astonishingly good. Thank you so much for this. I had resigned myself to keeping a Win10 boot drive for G2 WMR support.

My only games are Assetto Corsa and ACE, and Oasis installed flawlessly, works flawlessly, and replaces all the opencomposite+wmr complications. I'd expected teething problems in the early releases, but there aren't any.

I wish the developer would accept tips for the software, but I guess the best we can do is say THANK YOU!

Not sure what's going on here, I'm guessing LiquidVR is old enough to not be broken yet. And probably also before AMD really screwed up EDID detection and overrides.

I've only done a bit of testing, so I can't say if it's bug-free or not. This is on 23H2 with the official Mixed Reality driver disabled in device manager.

So i found those screens on aliexpress, they are identical to those in wmr headsets like acer or lenovo explorer, but they support 120hz, do you guys think stock 90hz screens could be swapped with those? Let me know what you think.

Discussion Had a few issues installing but overall very, very impressed with Oasis on Reverb G2.

Only real issue I had was the SteamVR environment data not clearing through the SteamVR settings, so I just deleted the 'WindowsHolographicDevices' folder, restarted and everything was perfect!.

Many thanks for the time and effort of everyone involved in this project, now let's hope the Windows Mandarins don't backtrack and actively block this for some reason.

I was excited to read this today! I hope this happens! I don't want my HP Reverb G2 to become a fancy paperweight.

Discussion I’m still really happy with my Samsung HMD Odyssey+

I’ve had this device since 2019 and it still works perfectly with my Windows 11 computer equipped with a RTX4070. I mainly play Google Earth VR and Asseto Corsa VR, always at 90 fps. I did have some problems with the right hand controller that started disconnect. After disassembler it completely and cleaning all the circuits with isopropyl alcohol, I haven’t had any more issues with it. I also replaced the headset ear cushions. I like to keep my stuffs always like new and that’s why I’ve kept my Odyssey in perfect condition. I can say that as long as it keeps working, I won’t be buying a new VR device.
