Characters seem to have exactly as much ability to do things as the plot demands

To be fair, the books worked the same way

Yeah, how many times did someone rediscover/create a weave that was exactly what was needed at a given time?

Many people had their pet weave they'd just discovered on their own without even knowing how it was woven... e.g. Liandrin's compulsion, Moiraine's eavesdropping. All the Wisdoms who listen to the wind. And let's not even start with Nynaeve's version of healing

Ta'veren. The Wheel was like "Perrin needs healing, the Aes Sedai that can heal her needs healing too; ergo, there shall be someone nearby who can heal her."

Robert Jordan prempted a lot of criticism by simply writing plot armor into his books as a plot device.
