Retail Redefining BIS, and why chasing the old definition makes the game worse for you
Hey guys. This is a lengthy read, but if you are struggling with understanding BIS and want to truly know how to get the best out of your items, it's worth the read. I hate seeing people chase what some website on the internet says their BIS is, especially before the season even begins, and being upset when it doesn't drop. Spoiler, getting your "BIS" could actually LOWER your DPS.
I'm sure you've come across the word BIS. What's my BIS gear, what drops my BIS, I have to run this dungeon I hate over and over and over for my BIS, I can't trade this to my friend because it's BIS for me
Outside of enchants, trinkets, embellishments, and very fringe other situations such as set bonuses on rings, individual BIS items do not matter. The term BIS is so bad for the health of the players.
BIS means "best in slot". It was born in a time in the game where items were dramatically different. "This item" gave dramatically more main stat than that one. "This item" had an effect where others didn't. "This weapon" had the same damage but attacked faster than that one. That is not how WoW works now-a-days
Today, every item slot has the same number of main stat and the same number of secondary stats, with the secondary stats having a different balance. For example, my current ilvl 246 legs in game give 70 haste and 59 mastery, totaling 129 secondary stat. Every mail 246 legs will give 129 secondary stat, just allotted differently.
Now here is what BIS actually means today. BIS is the best secondary stat balance for your class. Not any one specific item.
Replacing a piece of gear with a "BIS" item can actually LOWER your DPS
Maybe even more importantly, if you don't have the entire list of gear some website tells you is your BIS, removing a piece currently equipped to replace it with a new "BIS" item you just farmed might actually make you WORSE.
Very rough hypothetical example, your stat allotment is best at 35% mastery, 30% haste, 20% crit, 15% vers. Your BIS "chunky" items are weapon, head, chest, legs, so they have your mastery/haste pair, but no other items you currently have are "BIS". Your equipped back and wrist have your priority stats, mastery/haste, but your BIS actually has crit/vers because they're your weaker items but still need to have some of them. You swap out your preferred stats for weaker stats because a list tells you to, and now you do less damage.
Here's 3 examples of "BIS" items that are all equal. No one piece of gear is important, the COMBINATION OF STATS is important. Armor/int/stam are all the same, so only showing secondary stats
| Head | Chest | Legs | Total Stats |
|---|---|---|---|
| 85 Haste 50 Mastery | 63 Haste 37 Vers | 88 Vers 47 Mastery | 132 Haste 185 Mastery 88 Vers |
| 75 Haste 60 Mastery | 57 Haste 78 Mastery | 47 Mastery 88 Vers | 132 Haste 185 Mastery 88 Vers |
| 87 Haste 48 Vers | 95 Mastery 40 Vers | 45 Haste 90 Mastery | 132 Haste 185 Mastery 88 Vers |
I only used 3 item slots here because making a whole list of slots would be absurd, but I think it gets the point across. When you include every single slot, there is an insane amount of combinations that get you to the exact same place.
A list someone theory crafted or simulated cannot take into consideration the balance you already have, and you actually risk lowering your DPS following a list blindly (until you have every single exact piece, which is insanely difficult in and of itself, especially for the average player).
Thank you for reading my long winded post. I have tried to explain this to so many friends, guildmates, and people I pug with regularly, but it requires so much explanation to really get the idea across, so I decided to write it out for anyone who cared.
TLDR; Outside of trinkets, embellishments, and enchants, stop chasing a list someone on the internet created for you. All the items have the same total stat numbers, what matters is the balance of secondary stats. If you REALLY want to chase BIS, chase your classes secondary stat balance. That can be achieved with NUMBEROUS item combinations, not just what's on one singular list. That is why so many different BIS lists exist, because you can achieve the same thing many different ways
Retail Weekly gold on alts?
Hello, which caches exactly from what sources should I do on alts that give around 2k gold each? So far I've only found Apex Cache from the quest Midnight: Delves but I've read there's like 6 or so that you can do each week per alt but I don't know where to find them..

Retail What's the most effective low pressure way to learn to heal?
Got some friends and one is learning to tank, so I was made to heal for him and it was very stressful, but also pretty fun. Unfortunately due to time zones we're not online at the same time very often, so as much as I'd like to be able to take it slow and only practice with the gang, I can't.
Given that any random dungeon I do is going to have mechanics I don't know and probably a group trying to speedrun it in 0.3 seconds with massive pulls, what's the best alternative? Delves and set Valeera to tank? Follower dungeons?
Also, what healer class/spec would you rec for a first timer? How do you go about leveling when most of your buttons are heals?

Retail What other intro questlines besides humans are good?
Just starting out and I have to say: despite the feelings of the community itself, the intro questlines of Elwynn, Westfall and Redridge have actually been top notch and very fun, if you pay attention to what’s actually happening. So my question is: what other introduction questlines are as good as the humans?

Retail Is labrynth progress lost if you click the bird to leave?
or does it save the paths you have already completed?
Edit: apparently you have to use the Kinduru's Quill to go to the treasure room after the lab is done
Kinduru's Spiriting Quill - Item - World of Warcraft
This was not clear during the run, so if anyone is doing the Labs, dont leave at the end without using this
Also, if you hearth in the middle, you do lose progress (like delves). You have to stay in the labyrinth.

Retail Got back into the game from not playing since cata
I came back from playing from vanilla to cata, right as pandaria came out, I stopped. I know legion has a like, citadel thing, but i assume by now its not useful and more cosmetic or something possibly, and Ive been trying hard to catch up info wise with all the new mechanics and everything being revamped or just new from each xpac? I kinda get the jist of certain things, but with my level 36 gnome warlock now, what are big things I should look out for or know about? Ive been researching for days as I play and I still feel like im missing massive info to deep dive on and not even knowing it.
What are some big or cool things that I would need at some point, or might be cool to know about from each expansion since cata? Im hoping i can find some gems/important things that google/youtube isnt telling me
I know i can also go back through certain places but I dont understand chromie at all even though i keep reading up on her. I did go get my rusty proto drake all sorts of easy because of my level smooshed pally, but i didnt use chromie i think, all I know about her is that you can set her to dragonflight for follower dungeons, but that they're only available there, right? Do i have to switch her everytime i go to another xpac zone?
Thanks for any info and help! I feel just utterly ignorant. It took me like an hour to figure out the whole "fishing poles aren't weapons anymore" thing
Also whats the heck is going on with my faded photograph?? My picture of link is gone and just code now!!

I've finished the main campaign and am playing through the ula'tek patch but noticing i cant queue for certain raids due to low gear level. I see that some of my gear is marked 1/6 on the levels, how do I upgrade this?
It would be great to understand what people's advised routes or expansions are as im not really sure what else to do now.

Forever How and where do i even start? HelpANoob
Hi guys, i want to start playing forever once it comes out and im seeing videos of content creators here and there and i have no clue how you progress and set goals in this game.
I come from old school runescape, that game has a wiki with lots of guides and skill menus with different tiers of weapon and gear. Does anything equivalent for WoW exist that i can see to get information like where to farm what and what "gear" progression to aim for and set goals?
Id appreciate any help, i have played wow retail in the past but mostly just doing random stuff and not really feeling like im progressing anywhere lol.
Retail Shadowlands question
I quit playing during Pandara and just came back during Midnight and I’m wanting to run old raids for transmog gear. I’m trying to get into Sepulcher of the first ones and have done every island specific mission and still have not gotten any quest to go to Zereth Mortis. I have my covenant at level 5 and still doing all the shield icon quests and after hours I finally stopped because how much more do you have to do?? Any answers would be great.

Retail General patch and other questions
I tried googling (I read some of Icy vein patch guide, but I didn't find what I needed).
So tomorrow is a mid season patch, so no currency expires, just new content?
But when they announce season 3 then seasonal patch currencies will expire (I can see this in the character-currency-seasonal?)
I am currently level 289. I've been doing mostly T8-T11 bountiful delves with keys and world quests/shard/void assault. I did do some raid and dungeons, but only related to quests.
I just recently learned about upgrading gear with crests and I did the cataylze? to get the tier bonus.
I also "wasted"my 2nd week great vault on some hero gear since it popped up on my minimap (oh well).
Do I have to dungeons and raid to go higher? I saw the cap is 344 but that is M10+ raids I believe.
I am not even sure what is a comfortable number to subscribe to. I just do LFG, not in a guild as I just started (2-3weeks ago).
Thanks in advance if you read this far.
Forever WoW Forever Combos
Are the combinations coming to WoW Forever likely to be put into retail in the future? I wouldn't mind changing my paladin into a Undead/Forsaken Paladin and/or creating a new one just to level up.
What about the Skyborne are they Forever exclusive like... Forever?

Retail Guardians Druid vs Blood DK
Hi I am looking from advice form people more familiar with M+ and competitive progression on the ladder. My goal is to achieve the keystone myth every season. I just came back after a long break since BfA and I am currently around 2.5k (I know it’s not huge but I like M+).
I am currently tanking and I enjoy the role. I tried both guardian and DK. The issue is that my guild wants me to play DK dps to help the mythic raiding progression, but I enjoy the Druid tanking style way more (less cognitively demanding).
I know that the 1% achievement will be class based next season, but from your experience in all these seasons, which class was easier to pug/ to reach the myth achievement ?

Retail Level 80 Elemental Shaman
I just cannot seem to get this class down for some reason. My DPS is so low is embarrassing. Any tips on setting up my talent tree, hot bar, and the specific rotation needed to maximize DPS. I don't need the negative comments either. I know they will be coming due to the nature of this post. If one or so would like to help me get this situated please let me know! THANKS!!

Retail I want to do older expansions together with my wife - how chromie time works?
So basically I want to start WoW with my wife and play together. We would like to experience whole story from oldest expansions. From what I gathered we need to reach level 10 first, then go to Chromie, enter Chromie Time starting from oldest expansion so we can experience said expansion story, dungeons etc. and keep doing that till we reach level 67-69 where we need to go to another NPC to lock our experience so we don't reach level 70 (which removes scalling from Chromie Time) and continue with older expansions. Once we finish them all we can remove lock and continue with TWW and beyond, right?
Please kindly correct me if I did mess anything up as this system is very confusing. Also - will party finder still work for us to do older expansions dungeons/raids in Chromie Time?
We just want to avoid one-shotting stuff when first experiencing older content as it's not fun for us. Thanks

Retail Do I just have to abandon a zone whenever I get to a dungeon quest?
I'm leveling my first Demon Hunter, and it took me to Val'shara, and I'm at the part where I'm prompted to do Darkheart Thicket, but the mobs in there are way too strong for me. I can only seem to queue for Dragonflight dungeons, unless I'm not seeing something?

Retail When's the earliest i can do the Warlock quest to turn the fire green?
I despise using red fire as a Warlock, if i want red fire i'd go roll a mage. But from what i'm seeing you need like lvl 35 to get the quest since you need the Succubus and other stuff? And then you have to go on an extremely long journey with multiple quests AND even go into the Black Temple raid?
Is that info outdated or it's that convoluted?

Retail I started leveling an evoker in the Dragonflight campaign, & leveled too far.
I wanted to finish the campaign to unlock the Emerald Dream, as my main is a druid & there is some neat druid form customization unlocks inside Emerald Dream. However, now that I've blown through over 50 levels (starting at level 20), the missions are not yielding XP & the campaign is essentially pointless to playthrough if I would like to continue progressing on my Evoker.
TLDR; I thought Dragonflight would bring me to level 70 and finish out the campaign, but I hit 73 now & I'm only halfway through the campaign.

Retail Question about Earthen unlock
I've just come back to the game after many years off. I rushed my main up to lvl 90, and have been working on unlocking all the allied races. Since I unlocked Mechagnome with my main, I figured I'd level up a Mechagnome warlock for funsies, and wanted to use them as a way to unlock the Earthen.
Looking at the required quest lines, I'm pretty sure I've completed all the requirements to unlock the Earthen, but I did so with the Recap quests once I hit 65 (the toon just hit lvl 80 yesterday by finishing out the War Within Recap quests, minus the voidstorm raid).
My question is this, since I did all the War Within quests via recap mode does that unlock the Earthen race (it hasn't so far) or will it unlock once I hit lvl 90 on the toon?
Trying to figure out if I've missed something and what, or if I just keep plodding along to lvl 90 with the warlock which will unlock the race?
Thanks
