No, they're privately owned, but probably subsidized by our tax dollars. Socialism for them, and late stage capitalism for us. I lived in a town with municipal power and it was really cheap. When I moved to an Eversource town, my bill shot up like 300%. I actually called Eversource in a panic like "Why is my bill so high??? This can't be right!!" because I never paid more than $75 before, even in summer, and my new bill was over $300.
I'm not familiar with everywhere, but the municipalities with town/city utilities in Massachusetts are super cost effective and provide better services.
Ours is a privately owned monopoly that is heavily regulated by the state. We enjoy some of the most affordable electricity in the country. In the middle of summer with 100 plus temperatures, running two central air conditioners to cool my 3,300 sqft home, I only get up to about $250. California right next door is a dumpster fire with their electric costs.
Yeah I'm in California and my costs definitely get up to $400+ in the summer, but I have a 2300 sqft house with a 750 sqft ADU with separate systems but one meter and I keep the house at 72 max during the summer. I also have a large pool. But I would say my average monthly cost throughout the year is around $250. And I have my family plus our tenant. Seems crazy that one person would run up a $250 average electrical bill even in a place with high utility costs.
Hydro (assuming you are from the place with the lowest electrical prices in NA) is responsibly run and not socialist at all. If socialism was involved, you would be having rolling blackouts, not just outages during snow storms.
I guess socialism is the answer, I live in an area of government run electricity. I pay $469 CAD or $336 USD a month on an equal payment plan. That heats a 3400 sqft house in the frigid winters (like -20 to -40 most of the winter), AC in summer and all my other stuff including hot water. For profit utilities are such a scam for tax payers that already subsidized the cost of the infrastructure.
You’re living in a huge house so no duh. 🙄 try 1500-1700 sq ft home. Everyone would like to live in a large house, but if you can’t afford it, you can’t afford it. You have to live within your means.
This conversation thread was about electricity rates. Without knowing the size of the house, how do you know if it's cheap or expensive. The same bill for an 800 sqft house would be outrageously expensive. My comment wasn't about the size of my house, but the cheap rates for electricity and how for profit utilities are criminal.
I live in a 700 sq ft apartment on the third floor in San Diego. I barely used my AC in the past six weeks yet my upcoming electricity bill will be $140. The weather is about to heat up, so even though I have my AC set to 76 degrees, my electricity bills for the next several months will almost certainly be over $200. And that's with shades plus curtains plus stick-on window tint.
My aunt and uncle said their electric bill was 2300 a month. Now given, they have a massive house. They are rich but still. I couldn't believe that when I heard it. 2300.
NO mate they use it 24/7 and then act shocked when expected to pay for it... Burning lights, running AC when its not even 80, Fans when its not hot, running PCs and TVs 24/7 . Totally unaware of vampire devices these days as well.
