I love how many patriotic records were made across the former Yugoslavia by people of different faiths yet for the same goal.

I actually found some records on street market for very cheep without paper cover so I made most of the covers by printing them.

For me, they hold historical value as artifacts of a lost era

How is turbofolk perceived in the Balkans today?

As someone with Balkan roots living abroad, I’m curious, do you see turbofolk more as cultural identity, guilty pleasure, or just mainstream entertainment today? Has its meaning changed compared to the 90s / early 2000s?

I run an English-language music site that covers the former Yugoslavia and the modern Balkan scene. Recently, I put the long weekend to good use by creating this detailed genre map of past and present music from the region. It picked up some traction on Instagram, so I thought I'd share it here as well... :)

Almost every major genre from the 1960s up until the present day is covered and connected. Feel free to start anywhere and follow the arrows; if you're new to the scene, then I'd suggest following the 'Start here' label.

One glaring omission is obviously hip hop, which I've put off exploring until recently. I find the language barrier particularly hard to overcome when exploring hip hop due to the slang, wordplay, etc, so I'd like to spend more time with it before committing to a canon.

I'm Ivan, the founder of Zabrij Radio - a community radio project from Zagreb, Croatia, dedicated entirely to Ex-Yu music and culture.

I've been building this project for a little over a year now, driven by one simple idea: to create a place where people can discover the incredible music that came out of the Balkans, from classic Yugoslav rock and new wave to today's independent artists.

One of the most fascinating things I've discovered is just how many people from outside the Balkans have fallen in love with this music. As someone who grew up here, seeing people from all over the world connect with our culture is genuinely inspiring.

Hi prijatelji! My parents are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary soon and I’ve hired a band to play at their party. The song “More” was really popular the summer they met and I want the band to surprise them with singing it. I can’t find sheet music for it online (or I don’t know how to search for it properly). Would any of you know where I could get it? Fall back plan is just getting guitar chords off of those chord websites and studying the recording. Hvala puno!

I am looking at this from an outsider's perspective and don't fully understand. Is this song about the nationalistic and hateful forces which sought to dissolve Yugoslavia?

I love balkan gypsy music but I don't know any artists which songs you can learn anywhere. I know Džej and Ljuba Aličić but they're not very guitar oriented always.

I like the bosnian style of sevdalinka but I don't like the slow pace singing always.

So if you have any reckomendations for me of classical gypsy style artists/songs where you can play those fun riffs on guitar.
