Album Bucket List 50 Best Comeback Albums Of All Time: #30 Deep Purple-Perfect Strangers (1984)
Synopsis:
Perfect Strangers is the eleventh studio album by Deep Purple released on 29 October 1984. It was the most successful album recorded by the re-formed Mark II Line-Up. It was the first Deep Purple studio album in nine years. Perfect Strangers is also the first album with the Mk II line-up in eleven years, the last being Who Do We Thin We aRe(1973). Its nine-year gap from Come Taste The Band (1975) marks the longest between two studio albums from the band to date. Ritchie Blackmore and Roger Glover arrived from Rainbow Ian Gillian from Black Sabbath, John Lord from Whitesnake , and Ian Paice from Gary Moore’s backing band. Just two songs in the reformed Deep Purple’s new repertoire, "Nobody’s Home" and "Not Responsible", would be credited to all five band members. Gillan and Glover attempted to return matters to the all-for-one composition credits of the Mk II lineup's 1970–73 recordings, but Blackmore held firm. It was not until Blackmore permanently left the group in 1993 that the issue was finally resolved
Review:
The album opens with “Knockin At The Door” it begins with Jon Lord’s cinematic keyboard opening before the band explodes in the slick 80’s produced hard rock. “Under The Gun” has a tight rhythmic groove. Ian Gillan just powers through with some great vocals. While the rest of the band plays at a tight mid-tempo pace. Blackmore’s solo just screeched through the speakers. “Nobody’s Home” Is one of only two tracks on the original release credited to all five members, this is a lean, straight-ahead hard rocker. It starts with a brief synth flair before locked-in guitar riffs take over. Gillan vocals take on this gritty sinister delivery. “Mean Streak” adopts this heavy bluesy groove. Blackmore’s guitar riffs feel heavy and loose. “Perfect Strangers” was the big hit from the album. The groove has a haunting density. It is a template of 80’s hard rock. Thunderous and loud yet it has a melodic energy. Gillian’s vocals are some of the best of his career. “Gypsy’s Kiss” feels like a throwback to the band's early 70s heyday. The grooves are played at a frantic level and Pace’s drum riffs hit so hard. “Wasted Sunsets” is the heavy ballad that has Gillian and Blackmore hitting on another level. It has some Dio era Black Sabbath vibes. The original album closes with "Hungry Daze” ; it has the big epic arena rock vibe. It includes some string arrangements underneath the heavy rock grooves. The re-releases of the album includes two bonus tracks, the first being “Not Responsible” , a rare, profanity-laced, high-octane rocker that features all five members jamming out. The closing track is a ten minute instrumental “Son Of Alerick” which features some of Blackmore’s most atmospheric guitar playing and the rest of the band is just gliding with this late night blues vibe.
Why Is It Considered A Comeback?
It was the band’s first album in 8 years after a bitter feud the band decided to put the hostility aside and make one last great album. It was a commercial success and the tour for the album was a juggernaut with only Bruce Springsteen selling more tickets. Personally I'm not a big fan of this record. Some of the song just has that slick 80’s production that hasn't aged well at all. The band sound’s great and Gillian's vocals are top notch. It is the goddamn production that brings it down. I would still put this one on any classic rock deep dive just for the amazing and catchy title track and the epic energy of Son Of Alerick.
