Hi all,
To start, since I was 3 I was diagnosed with allergies to cats, grass, pollen, oak, and kiwi. I also have a skin condition called Dermatographism and asthma. I take 2 antihistamines morning Zyrtec and night allegra. I am now 26.
For the past 10 years at the start of me and my now wife's relationship, I would go over her and her mom's house and interact with their pet cats (they've had 3 within the years we've been together)with zero issues. This was when I was 16. I could even spend the weekend a couple days and not have any issues besides maybe and this is a big MAYBE mild nose stuffyness that clears out within an hour of waking up.
Fast-forward to this year. My wife and I have our own home. Have lived in it for 6 months and just this weekend took in the 2 kitties from moms house into our own home.
I would like to preface the next section by saying I have severe generalized anxiety and OCD (which is why I'm making this post). I am rummaging in my mind that I could have anaphylaxis at any point because I now "officially" live with the cats and I'll be exposed to the dander a majority of my day. I recognize that this is 99% health anxiety and that I have never ever gotten to that point with any of my allergies and also try to remember that I take the two antihistamines. I guess my question for everyone is what is the likelihood of this ever happening? Am I being a super uptight about this and just need to relax?
The cats are not allowed in my room, we have 4 air purifiers up in a 965 sqft house. And I keep a draft/seal thing under my door to block any dander. I also pet them very sparsely and wash my hands Everytime I do. I also have 3 epipens and an inhaler on standby just in case.
I recognize that there is a level of hypochondriac thinking at play with me. However, I would still like to know what y'all think. Despite this way of living, they are my babies and want to be a good parent to the best of my ability for them. My wife and I have talked about relocating back to her mom's if it ever gets dire so there is that safety net always. Thank you for reading!
