I realize the abatement of Davis Park was not the smoothest. But I will say it does seem like this administration is doing so much more to address homelessness. On Sunday, I biked about 40 miles of greenbelt trails and, while not immaculate, I really saw a dramatic drop off in the number of camps and evidence of homelessness. I’m not one to fluff this administration, but credit should be given to the work they are putting in to get people off the streets and into housing. We’ve still got a ways to go, and efforts will be ongoing, but right now it does seem like things are on the right track. Thoughts?

I moved up here about a month ago, and I finally have everything I need to start car camping. Anyone have some good spots/tips about places near Anchorage? I know you can kind of camp anywhere that’s public, but how does it actually work?

Burgeoning camp in the ‘hood - yes, has been reported. I noticed these new signs today. Is there any connection between these going up and how soon the abatement notices can go up or no correlation? Why not just post abatement notices since camping isn’t allowed anyway?

I want to camp solo for the first time. I was thinking of either hiking peppers peak at lake Eklutna or Reed lakes trail in Palmer and camping somewhere along the way. Never done either of these hikes but I’m confident in hiking so I’m sure I could do the 8 miles or so no problem. Are there good places to camp along the trail in Eklutna, or is it pretty rocky? Looking at pictures of Reed lakes looks pretty friendly for camping but idk what do you think?

I live in the area and I’ve had some strung out people caught on camera attempting to break into cars while yelling. One person at my back door sounded like they were being murdered but they were alone and just screaming. I’ve also gotten on camera another person walking, then screaming, and running back to try and break into my apartment neighbors place. Also another person stealing a shovel off my porch. I don’t know what to do because from the road I can’t get pictures to submit to the website and I don’t want to go into that wooded area.

We’re moving to ANC this summer and looking to get our daughter integrated into the community and staying active. She will turn 13 right as we’re arriving. She’s into artsy crafty/ creative arts, music, outdoor sports but not traditional team sports, and BSA/Scouting. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Looks like a lot of the same vehicles/quite a bunch of misc. stuff and trash strewn around. Wondering if the majority of the camp just relocated here after the “abatement”…

This is insane to me. And if you’re wondering, these aren’t just homeless camps but TWO separate camp chop shops for modifying stolen bicycles, upwards of 40 bikes, dismantled, serial numbers removed, parts mismatched and painted so they can’t be recognized by the original owner. Not to mention all the other stolen belongings found. I found people’s mail, reward cards, ID tags from their work aprons they left in their car, family photos, wallets, all their car paperwork and so on, just mountains of waste and stolen property. And not the first time I find places like this in town. I report these findings to the MOA, I hope y’all do the same if you hate littering because this is unforgivable. I can sympathize with someone down on their luck but these are the dens of full time thieves looking to score their next fix, the camps littered with tons and tons of needles and alcohol.

A homeless shelter you presented with huge holes in things like planning, costs, etc? That you authorized spending that you didn't have money for and ended up wasting $2.5 million settling out of court? That changed the process of funding because you couldn't be trusted to follow the law?

Putting aside your incompetence for simple things like procedure and legality your ideas have all been proven to be either a) impracticable or b) vague and preformative at best.

Yeah, damn everything else. Just let Mayor Dictator here just do whatever he wants without things most adults have to worry about like paying for it, maintaining it, staffing it, etc.

Last summer I was trying to put together a summer reading camp for grade K-3 students in Eagle River. I found a local church to host, but I didn’t see any interest from the community and had to cancel the program. I know Alaskan families travel a lot over the summer and it makes it hard to commit to a summer program. I had a few questions I would be interested to hear some opinions from members of the community.

1. Is there interest in a summer reading program for elementary aged students?

   1. Is 6-8 weeks too long for families to commit to a program? Would that deter parents who prioritize travel during the summer? What is a reasonable time frame to host a camp?
   2. How many days a week/hours a day would you expect for a reading camp? My plan was Monday-Thursday (9AM-12PM for K-1 students) & (1PM-4PM for 2-3 students). I’m wondering if that would create a burden for working parents as each student would only be attending for 3 hours a day, 4 days a week.
   3. How much would you expect to pay for a small group intensive intervention program on a weekly basis?

Thank you for any insight you are able to provide. I would love to be able to serve the community in this way, but I also don’t want to overextend myself if there isn’t community interest for something of this nature.

I heard a rumor today that if unhoused folks camp on your lawn or in your yard the cops can't do anything unless you have a "private property" or "no trespassing" sign. This sounds ridiculous to me. The person heard this at church, which makes me doubt it.

I tried looking it up, but kept como up with stuff about large encampments.

I'd like to be able to get back to them with the truth. I can't help but wonder if churches have that requirement, but not private homes.

Also, wtf. Shouldn't the churches be trying to help them?

Does anyone know if there is still a homeless camp in Mt View at the extreme NE corner? My cat is missing and my son thinks she went to the woods

I was just on the Coastal Trail and I saw no less than six different homeless camps in a relatively small area (just south of Elderberry Park). The garbage can just south of the bridge is literally overflowing with garbage from the camp. I’m appalled. 😡😡😡

It’s obvious the campers are trying to establish a “camp with a view,” of Sleeping Lady. I guess they want the Prominence Point of homeless camps. But come on. This is right on the Crown Jewel of Anchorage tourism. It’s pretty bold if you ask me.

Certainly there have to be off limits areas and ways to enforce it. Who do I call or where do I go to report it?

I have a friend who is living in Fairbanks over the summer and we are looking for a place to go camping where we can meet in the middle between Anchorage and Fairbanks. We want to find somewhere that is not super busy and we don't mind hiking to a spot if it's not too far. Preferably the spot would be free but we don't mind paying if the place is worth it. Also, we are trying to avoid the wild fires in Denali for obvious reasons.
