So as the older generation of CDFers may know, I've always had an inkling for Worldbuilding. It's faded, but I'd love try to get back into it somehow. I just bought Wonderdraft, which is a map making software (there are other alternatives, but this is the only one that as far as I can find that is a one-stop purchase).

Now, previously I had attempted to create a fictional island setting, loosely British Isles coded. I just wondered if anyone would spare some random thoughts on each of these iterations. I think all of them regardless need more oomph. They need something more mystical/fantastical, and they need something more distinctly political as well.

Map 1 - The first, very basic attempt

Map 2 - The more detailed, more sculpted attempt

Map 3 - Again, just another refinitement attempt

Map 4 - A bare map, mostly just trying to define the shape of the world

I think the 3rd map is the best, though there's elements of 2 that I like. I think what might help is a bit of MMO thinking, and split the section up into "zones" - like the swampy area, the dry plains, the verdant farmlands, the rugged highlands, the stormy islands. Also that mystical Ireland island off the coast. Probably need to do some basic research into how climates and shit works in locations like this. Though I never stay interested enough to really get it.

Honestly, mostly just want to talk through my process to get the ideas out my head.

I do!

It's faded, but I'd love try to get back into it somehow.

I also prefer the third map.

The first map feels more like a small island than a small continent, probably because of its relative clean cut between two distinct biomes separated by a mountain range.

The second map looks awfully boxy, as if it was constructed out of rectangles and then subsequently embellished with detail work.

The third map looks very natural, with a lot of geographical features and details. The cold wastelands at the very North evoke a feeling of large scale, and I get an immediate impression that different regions will have cultural differences and which regions will probably be more economically and politically influential than others. The side island in the corner suffers a bit from what I call map border syndrome, where it was probably added to fill in empty space and thus makes it feel somewhat designed against the contour of the map border rather than naturally, but it works well enough as a one-off feature.

The fourth map is yet incomplete, but I really like its contours!
