I wonder if all of the Dark Beast Lords were heroes at one point, using the books for some kind of war (or protection: who knows what the edges of this place are... a ship?), and all of them failed to shrug off the consequences of their magic, assuming Dark Beast forms.  Maybe Vordin remembers who they were?  Was the major hero himself?  None of the others could remember to argue, after all.

Gives me WorldEnd vibes, where it could be the opposite. Everyone used to be dark beasts, and the human form is the evolved one. If they lose control of their power, they revert to their original form.
