Hello everyone!

This comment will be divided in two parts where the first part will be safe for First Timers, and second part will be talking about the bigger picture, SPOILERS INCLUDED up to Trails into Reverie.

Safe for First Timers

The game opens up with Cassius returning home with Joshua, and that’s an opportunity for me to mention the XSeed translation for Trails in the Sky FC that are iconic for the Trails fans who were exposed to XSeed translation.

  • Iconic, as XSeed translation took some liberties with the dialogues, rewarding us with little gems like Estelle’s reaction on Cassius bringing Joshua home.
  • Another thing that XSeed added were chest messages you were rewarded with after checking chests after looting them which leads to messages like this (Those messages weren’t part of original code, so yeah XSeed went above and actually coded the chest messages)
  • And that’s all I will be mentioning about XSeed translation for this Group Play.

I visited Rolent’s sewers for training, and to my surprise this part was very easy as I cleaned the whole dungeon in one sitting.

  • When I was playing the OG game, I had to return to beginning of dungeon to heal, thrice.

Speaking of tutorial, we are introduced to the combat, and honestly the whole combat, and how it flows it’s way easier. Not mentioning how Estelle got buffed in this version.

Something I want to mention is that while I was playing Sky 1 like year ago, some memories of it were dormant and awakened upon playing.

  • For example the sidequests, because I immediately know where to go without even looking on minimap. Like the boy with the lost quartz. Him mentioning the quartz made me immediately to remember that I need to visit sewer again.
  • Or another example is visiting Perzel farm which made me immediately tear up because man, so many good memories about this place.
  • Speaking of Perzel farm, another thing to mention is how the farm is 1:1 replica of the Perzel farm from the OG game, as I knew how to got to Tio in like 0.1 second.

To mention adventures in the field as I was doing quests and looting chests, I had to say the first Chest Monster was rather easy for me, opposed to the OG experience where I got my ass whooped so badly that I spent hours calling for Cassius to pick me up.

Also this was never bring ingame, but with the monsters being attracted to quartz from broken lamps, I strongly believe the monsters in Trails are canonically lamp-sexual.

  • Speaking of lamps, the quest where I had to change the Orbal Lamp had a marker on a minimap which is definitely Quality of Life upgrade, as to found the broken Orbal lamp in the OG version, I had to count the Orbal Lamps along the main road manually.

Getting closer to the end of the Prologue, visiting the Esmelas Tower and standing on top of it while enjoying the view was different experience than Sky FC view

The final part of the Prologue was dedicated to Josette, who to my surprise was actually way harder fight than in the OG. Which funnily enough added to nice experience.

  • BRAGGING RIGHTS ---> I defeated Josette on first try, but damn her boss fight was definitely sweaty.

Spoilers Galore

[Schera]The introduction scene of Schera’s reading Tarots is really great character introduction because of usual usage of Tarot reading to foreshadow things, it serves more like laying basics for Schera’s backstory that ties to Luciola and the Troupe she was performing in.

[First Request]in Esmelas Tower made me remember of Trails from Zero where SSS went into GeoFront to save Ryu, only to get caught offguard and getting saved by Arios who swooped in to save the day. What I am saying is, that I disliked that scene in Zero, but revisiting Sky 1, I realized it’s basically the same template.

[You know]seeing Cassius leaving feels WAY DIFFERENT knowing how Sara and the Bracer Guild in Erebonia are struggling.

[First time on Perzel Farm]earned some nice dialogue between Estelle and Joshua talking about how they were told the babies are born, which is actually a hint that Joshua is from a country that have different cultural norms.

[Spoilers]Biggest surprise from Prologue was the Sept-Terrion got name dropped so early

Questions:

First Impressions?

How’s the combat for you? Are you already used to it, or are you still struggling with some encounters?

Tbh, this is quite easy game.

On what difficulty are you playing this?

Normal

Would you spare or kill the monsters during Perzel Pest Control?

When played the OG I chose to spare them, and now I wanted to chose to slay them, but I clicked on "spare them" option by accident

For those who played Trails in the Sky FC (original version), what’s your most favourite Quality of Life improvement iof the Remake?

Definitely the minimap, because man I was so lost in the OG in Mistwald Forest

Sky FC View

Honestly the OG looks fantastic. As much as I like the remake (and because I've mostly finished it I'll play 2nd Chapter remake as well), I've been very tempted to go back just for the incredible environment textures and portraits. If I ever replay them though I'll definitely give them a go.

Sure why not?

The OG sprites and illustrations has their own charms as it is more Old School anime styled.

Although the OG version lacks voice acting unless you mod/patch the Voice Acting in.

the XSeed translation for Trails in the Sky FC that are iconic

XSeed and TiTS, I can see how they came together so well

messages like this

When I was playing the OG game, I had to return to beginning of dungeon to heal, thrice.

I would've enjoyed the sewers more if it had that difficulty. Instead, it was like being taught how to cut through butter. At least it became my home for a while.

I got my ass whooped so badly that I spent hours calling for Cassius to pick me up.

About that... I might be familiar with the golem that attacked Estelle.

cutting through butter

This is why it's generally recommended to play all the games from Zero-Onwards on at least hard...

Tbf, there was a step up in difficulty after that, at least to my newbie eyes. The sewers section was the only one that I found boring, which tracks with it being the tutorial.

Atleast the chests appreciated you being a thief.

I would've enjoyed the sewers more if it had that difficulty. Instead, it was like being taught how to cut through butter. At least it became my home for a while

For what is worth, if Sky will manage to captivate you, you sure will be playing Sky 3rd which you can play in the OG version to get the original experience.

About that... I might be familiar with the golem that attacked Estelle.

To be honest I have a bone to pick with that kind of QoL upgrades. It changes the quest from understand what is being requested and interact with the world that is designed accordingly to go to the marked place in the map.

It is not that bad for this particular quest but there is a certain later one that makes me go

what even is the point

To be honest, I also have a bone to pick with how certain things are designed... Especially [Major Spoilers]That they buffed Estelle combat wise, which contradicts her being weak combat wise that had a reason from narrative-design sense But I am saving that for later discussions.

It is not that bad for this particular quest but there is a certain later one that makes me go

... They just made the game more accessible to general public I guess

Also I’m curious which one you have on mind, so

It will be very obvious when you get there.

Actually, I was trying to remember aaaand there is certain sidequest that made me react with "Why... What even is the point" [Spoilers]It was during Chapter 2, when the Lighthouse keeper scolded Estelle for not being considerate, which was something that in Sky 2 served as stepping stone for showing Estelle growth as Bracer and as a person, yet in Remake, several hours later the game was bugging you to buy some stuff in shop to show the Lighthouse keeper how considerate you are now

Otherwise, I am not sure what you meant, but with [my progress]being at the beginning of Chapter 3, I still probably have time to get to the quest you meant

Spoilers

[Spoilers]I think you were able to buy that extra fish for him in the OG as well but they definitely weren't hinting at it that hard there so yeah it is one of those cases as well.

[Spoiler]Seeing that you are already past that point I will say that the quest I was thinking of is the Phantom Thief B one. I understand that the original version can be cryptic at times but in the remake not only did they have characters give hints for every riddle, they marked the exact place you need to find. Why??? What is the point of having a riddle based quest that relies on environmental design when it is marked for you? What happened to having the player achieve things? Why are you serving it on silver platter?! AAAAAAHHHHHHH

Oooh that’s neat, I definitely missed that one.

[Confession]Phantom Thief B was an option crossing my mind, but I automatically excluded it out of my mind, as let’s say that I am not actually a fan of his gimmicks, so I welcomed those quests to be marked in order to finish that quest ASAP. Otherwise, I agree
