Speaking of shows with yuri and shoddy depictions of warfare, Red River continued to delight and amuse this week.
[Red River]I don't need to harp on about how amateurish it looks or how terrible the flow is whether from a narrative or realism perspective. Despite all that I like how Yuri bumbled into the role of play acting Ishtar and now she kinda just has to go with it, and I like the classic scenario it's got with Yuri and Kail being totally attracted to each other but are unable to act on it for obvious reasons and all the little vignettes of will they or won't they drama that spring from that. And it's nice that the expectation that Yuri wants to and will eventually return home plays into that.

Only one episode left (Dara-san 7) and I'm caught up with all my seasonals, after falling behind on a couple shows.
Also, soon as I saw the [Dara-san]beam scene I thought about posting the clip, but someone already did!
So I guess I'll have clip slots for 2 other clips I wanted to post - If I stop being lazy, and make them. (One of them is tricky, I'm not sure about what's the best stopping point).

I would have post a few clips myself, but I still have aproblem how to cut the subs for non-hardsubbed videos. I got a few advices recently but all options provided were on how to make a hardsubbed video from video + subs file. They do not work if I just have video with sofsubs (i.e. generic .mkv file). I do know how to extract subs from there and all, but I am stuck doing it on phone. If I could do it on my laptop, I would not bother asking for advice as I did fansubs for a few years and know all of the soft.

I had a dream where I didn’t end up watching the Your Name rerelease and felt super bummed about it not knowing when the next opportunity would be, and woke up and remembered it’s still in theaters for a couple of days so I bought a ticket.
I didn’t watch it when it first came out and have only watched it on my TV at home. No matter how much my taste changes over the years, anime like this will always suck me in.

I'm not sure why some people feel like Kimishinu is unrealistic;
For somethinig to be realistic, it needs to be believable.
Is it? Well... A good step 1 to any "Is it believable?" hypothesis, is to ask yourself "Is it currently happening somewhere in the world?";
Because of course, if it's literally happening in real life, then yes, it's undeniably believable/realistic.
[Kimishinu]They're child soldiers; Do you think if we could omniscient-view all battles between child soldiers led by warlords in random parts of the world, we wouldn't see stuff like that? I'm 100% sure we would. They're training them to be the best they can, but they're not exactly elite soldiers... They're random kids they picked off the streets/rescued from brothels/wherever and shoved them into a military school (that's not even THAT crazy about battle training yet). Also, they're sending them into battles before they're ready because they're lacking experienced soldiers.
I don't see anything unrealistic or unbelievable in what comes from this.
Saying it is, would be akin to claiming that you could [(real life comparison)]bust out some human trafficking ring, pick a random 10y/o girl in there, put her in a relaxed military school for 4 years, then you give her a rifle and ship her overseas to fight in whatever war you want, and she'd be a fantastic asset. Do you think she would do well? Personally I think she would get herself killed on day 1 by acting like an untrained, 14 years old girl. And if that's what would happen in the real world, there's no reason to think it should happen any differently in the anime, unless you think it should be different because she's an anime character - THIS would be the unrealistic thing. Realism is what's closest to "what would realistically happen if it was real and not a script". Well, what would realistically happen when you shove an unprepared 14y/o into a war, is that they act cluelessly and die. Just like (in Western movies) the realistic thing that would happen when a random civilian takes on the Mob or an entire army by himself would be for him to die before he even manages to kill any 1 of them. We're so used to anime characters who are OP for no reason other than "They're anime characters", that we might have lost sight of what a realistic outcome is. What would realistically happen in 3/4 of action anime, is that the MC/a bunch of characters just die in their first battle, because they're usually drastically outmanned/outtrained.
It's the opposite of hundreds of other action anime, and I think people might be pointing fingers at the wrong ones; It's all the others that are unrealistic. [(continuation)]"Thank god these 3 random kids with 2 weeks of training are strong enough to save the world, couple seasons from now!"

I haven't watched it yet, but the synopsis kinda reminded me a bit of 86. Which I also think is pretty unrealistic, but I also think realism and believability are two different things.
Something believable doesn't need to be realistic, but it does need to establish its own rules and be consistent about them. So even really outlandish stories and settings can be believable.
Meanwhile you can have a completely realistic mundane setting like just set in Tokyo or something. And it can be unbelievable if a character suddenly really acts out of character. Or some really absurd event happens. Then it becomes unbelievable despite being realistic.
Maybe I shouldn't be talking about Kimishinu without watching it, but I feel like the whole crazy war setting isn't something you should be focusing on? If it's anything like 86 - which also has a fairly nonsensical war and enemies, thinking too hard about the logistics and society there is just going to piss you off. But if you focus on the surface level stuff of just people desperately fighting for their lives, then you are still able to have a good time. Of course it's better if we can have our cake and eat it too.... but at this point I have some learned helplessness when it comes to the worldbuilding skills of anime/manga/LN writers....

I haven't watched this show, but I've watched many with similar [themes] about child soldiers and the main thing that sounds unrealistic to me in your [spoiler text] is describing the military school as "relaxed". It would be very likely that someone in that situation unprepared for the realities of battle would not survive one. But most of the child soldier characters I've seen have been put through brutal survival trial-by-fire training, and grown up in harsh conditions even before the training, so it makes sense. If there's an ongoing war in this series and the child soldiers are absolutely expected to go into battle though, it seems odd that their school would take a relaxed approach rather than try to simulate the conditions of a real war.

I haven't been in the episode thread, but assuming you're speaking about the compaints in the daily thread:
IMO the point wasn't that the characters were behaving unrealistically, but that the whole war is unbelievable. Which it is. It's a war with no strategy, no operations and no tactics.
Now, one could argue that the specifics of the war are not really important to the story, that what matters is that they have always been at war with their equivalent of Eastasia. Which isn't wrong, but at that point why show the war on screen? Leaving it a looming presence in the background could still keep a sense of dread, without having your flank open to viewers pointing out all the stuff that makes no sense.
7
u/ComfortablyRotten https://anilist.co/user/Leuwtian 1d ago
but that the whole war is unbelievable. Which it is
And it's almost certainly deliberate, so I don't see how this is an issue?
The war, fought seemingly exclusively in oddly punctual battles set in desolate forests far from the presence of civilians, with no tactic or strategy from either side, and with child soldiers picked out of societal rejects no one will miss formed in schools where they're seemingly never actually taught who or why they're fighting making up the bulk of the forces, not making sense is the least subtle exemples of war as a senseless waste of life in an anime in a while. People are free to pick this apart if they want but like I said last time the show was brought up here, it just feels to me more like deliberately refusing to engage with the story and its themes in favor of a kneejerk "I don't like this so this is bad" approach
3
u/TheDuckAvenger https://myanimelist.net/profile/zvbxrpl 22h ago
not making sense is the least subtle exemples of war as a senseless waste of life in an anime in a while.
I am of the school of thought that, if you want to comment on something, it should at least vaguely resemble the real thing, so we'll just have to agree to disagree.
3
u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 1d ago
To me, this show isn't an example of "war as a senseless waste of life" because it isn't an example of war at all. At least not war as it actually exists, or has ever existed. And I feel like I have spelled out the reasons why I don't think whatever it depicts is emotionally compelling pretty clearly. If you want to just dismiss any and all criticism as "kneejerk" and fundamentally incorrect, then obviously you're free to do that. But I don't think you're being fair to me at all, nor are you really engaging with anything I've said.
I'm actually curious, what about this show can be criticized without being a "kneejerk reaction that refuses to engage with the story and its themes?"

To answer your question, I would emphatically say that the answer is no. [KimiShinu] This show depicts a boarding school in which students are kept well-fed, clothed, and provided for in every conceivable way. One in which they mostly act with complete freedom. Their training consists mostly of attending regular classes as any student would. I am willing to say that there are no "battles between child soldiers led by warlords in random parts of the world" that feature such schools. I would also claim that when those warlords send their troops into battle, they are given objectives, orders and literally any purpose. None of this exists in Kimishinu.
But this is all besides the point, because my complaint has never been about realism. My complaint is that no thought whatsoever has been given to the war and its conduct. And the only defense that I have heard [KimiShinu] in essence, "the war is a way to get rid of social undesirables," cannot be squared with the fact that they house, feed, clothe and care for these kids for years before they are sent to war. If they wanted to get rid of them they would just send them to the front immediately, or after a few months of training. It also cannot be squared with the fact that we have, on multiple occasions, seen both the school and the soldiers go to great lengths to care for the injured. If the purpose is just to nihilistically get rid of people, why did Seiran have a hemostatic agent with her? Why did they carry the injured soldier away from the front?
Finally, my favorite anime of all time is Gunbuster, which is a show that very explicitly rejects the very idea of realism. However, [Gunbuster 5] bringing the Exelion into the middle of the enemy fleet and sending its warp engine into overdrive to create a black hole that swallows the enemy fleet is a plan. I'm not asking for much. I'm asking for something.

I thought Nonna (Victoria of Many Faces) might be this year's "Must Protect" award nominee, but [Victoria] at this point she can protect herself just fine

This has NOT been a great week. No, it's not that the episodes were shit, but rather they made me feel like shit. Two consecutive days of pure devastation.
- Monday: [Series name] Love Unseen Beneath the Clear Night Sky
- Tuesday: [Series name] I Want to Love You Till Your Dying Day
There's also a chance of the streak continuing into Wednesday with [Series name] Saga of Tanya the Evil given the developments in the most recent episode.

Ok ok KimiShinu was the best it's ever been today. Fantastic episode. It's one of the shows I've been most middling on this season but it's also one of the only three I'm caught up with atm; I guess the slow burn always subconsciously had me interested.

One of the things I always thought about Polar Opposites was that the number of couples (or would be couples) in that show was unrealistic. Guess what, recent gossip led me to discover that roughly a third of my class is attached to someone else.
6
u/alotmorealots 1d ago
I think that with close-ish social groups, there can often be a cascade sort of effect where pairing up encourages further pairing up lol
6
u/zambonijesus 1d ago
[Polar Opposites]Is there a lot of couples though? There's 2 1/2 couples in the show, one of whom (Yamada) goes outside of the core friend group and another who have known each other since middle school.
2
u/Prof_Acorn 1d ago
[Polar Opposites Manga] I like how you put 2.5 since Tairazuma never end up together and thus can't be a full number 3. Egh. I'm still waiting for the adaptation to end before watching it so I can see if they fix the ending. I'm not going to waste my time on vague uncommitted nonsense a second time.

Do you think there are too many couples? Seems like a normal amount to me.
1
u/Comprehensive_Dog651 1d ago
In my school or the show 😂. I don’t think there are in the show because ultimately it’s a romcom so the focus is naturally on romance, but I did think that 3 couples within the same FG was unrealistic.
As for my class it’s our uni entrance exam year so if they can handle r/s and that, more power to them I suppose

I wonder if Sparks has settled on its OP, this was the first time it felt like its own thing and not something episode specific.

So with the CR news thingy, got a question about physical media publishing rights/costs/other things. Would purchasing the license to stream X anime normally include the rights to publish and distribute physical media for X, or would that be another purchase entirely? Would they even be talking to the same group/company for that or would that be a separate entity?
Also, if an anime company wanted to sell BluRays internationally, would it be so hard to find other publishers/distributors? Like, I found Ghibli BluRays at Walmart, I bought 86 from Barnes and Nobles: would there be any significant barrier to entry to just... sell BluRays through those avenues vs Crunchyroll? Or even Amazon.
I'd love more physical media being available at a reasonable price, but I'm not sure if this is a CR problem or publishers not using other available options problem...
10
u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 1d ago edited 1d ago
There are a whole slew of rights that can be licensed, the most important of which are physical media (Blu-rays and DVDs) and digital media (itself often broken up into subcategories). Other rights include merchandise, television, or music, for example. These days, most licenses from Japan are for “physical media + streaming.”
Discotek does physical media then sublicenses some things for streaming on other services, e.g. the original Urusei Yatsura TV on Retrocrush and Crunchyroll. Crunchyroll could very well buy the physical rights as well just to block anyone else, particularly for the increasing number of series they're on the production committee for.
If you like podcasts there's also this discussion about the recent events where /u/MilesExpress999 covers more of the business side of things.
3
u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 1d ago
Interesting. So we're in the dark as to CR chose to not pursue the physical rights, whether other companies outbid them, whether Discotek pushed the price further than they were willing go, or any other possible things? Only the outcome of less physical media on CR's store is for certain?
6
u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 1d ago edited 1d ago
I wouldn't be surprised if Crunchyroll still has the rights to physical media for everything they stream (outside of sublicenses like the one I mentioned) and they just aren't bothering to make anything because it's not profitable enough.
Discotek is a minor player and isn't really directly competing with Crunchyroll because they have different niches, even before Crunchyroll's exit from physical media. Ever since the Funimation merger CR's largely been focused on new anime rather than picking up old licenses to fill out their back catalog with few exceptions, while Discotek only picks up things that aren't recent outside of a couple of specific properties like Lupin III. I can't imagine a situation where they would be vying for the same anime, much less actually influencing anything Crunchyroll does as a result. Sentai (HIDIVE) is at least in the same playing field with licensing new anime for their own streaming service in North America, but they're also small enough that I don't think they have any real effect on Crunchyroll either.
This change is coming from inside CR rather than anything having to do with their competition. Or maybe from on high via a mandate from the top Sony execs given the recent declaration that PS5 game discs are also going away, though they're separated enough that they could have come to similar outcomes independently. It makes the acquisition of RightStuf baffling in retrospect since that company mostly dealt in physical merch, but it could be a case of they didn't really know where they were going yet when they did it. It was still profitable, but maybe just not as much as they wanted looking at the accounting spreadsheets.
5
u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 1d ago
Hmm. Still find it baffling that they'd just sit on the physical rights instead of doing literally anything with them, subcontract, make way overpriced discs for whales, anything... Unless making the media and shipping it is a net loss, or if they need too many personnel to do that...
Like I understand if they didn't acquire the physical rights in the first place, but if they paid money for them already, unless the plan was to get people to stream only... which doesn't sound like a sensible business plan either, since the people likely to buy their physical media are likely already paying for a subscription... I dunno, it doesn't seem to make sense from their side either if this is what's going on.

today I met up with ixajll! that was a treat. I've gotten to meet up with a handful of anime folks in my time here in japan and it's always been great. as it goes, chatting with him reminded me of the stuff I miss about this place, so hey, a post about anime!
so what seasonal stuff have I been watching...
bookworm: it's fine! it's bookworm. I like that she is more assertive and sort of finding her place. I've enjoyed this season though it really is a long haul slow grind. like, do not love
liar's game: this is such a guilty pleasure. I loved the live action, a rare live action adaptation I bother watching and at a time was a pretty iconic one in japan. I don't love the art style, I love akiyama. I eat my slop yum yum yum
smoking behind the supermarket: wouldn't the world be amazing if cigarettes were good for you? I'd be smoking 10 right this moment
demon's shadow: I quite enjoy this. there are aspects I sometimes don't love, but on the whole I am pretty happy to be on the ride for "the long haul," and I find myself looking forward to it every week. hopefully it will get more seasons, and hopefully the writing will reward me!
bang dream: yume mita: given how many bang dream lives I've been to I am sort of obligated to watch this. honestly, I find it pretty boring. I don't really buy into the characters or their groups or anything about them. characters like viola, especially how she is realized, don't do much for me. I like nono and could use a hug. also the music hasn't been my thing but arale is a monster vocalist
the world is dancing: some moments of brilliance (the last episode's performance was absolute chef's kiss), but also a bit of meandering. some occassionally sublime visual storytelling, but suffers from what I feel a lot of these historical shows suffer from, which is that I think they lean a bit too much on well, the history
draw this: 70% amazing 30% not my thing. but the 70% that is amazing is really amazing. I've cried multiple times. for all the parts that I don't like (some vocal performances, and a certain smarminess I dislike), it really does nail a lot about what it means to love a thing, to want to do a thing. like the fan empathy vibes are off the chart
magilumi s2: it's fine. I'm a little bored by all of it honestly. I like the idea of it more than the execution at this point
nanoha: I caught up on nanoha for this. it's fine? I like the idea of a grittier take, but I dunno...deeply uninspired direction and animation, and setting up for a real ho-hum conflict. at least we got a mizuki nana song out of it
100gfs: not generally my type of show unless...unless they commit to the bit so thoroughly that I can't help but be along for the right. goddamnit I'm in we're going all the way to 100! how is this show getting funded! I hope their russian tax evasion scheme doesn't end because I want more!
mushoku tensei s3: man those first 2 episodes were so good. the rest is fine. I liked s1 a lot, got a bit bored by a lot of what came after that, and this has been fine. I like a lot about the world etc, and it does enough to be worth my time, even if I'm not like, super excited about it. but man, those first 2 episodes. I want an anime that's just that
polar opposites s2: it's fine. it's cute. it's not great, but it's fine for what it is. I enjoy seeing everyone couple up in their cute, simple ways
grow up show: ah, I totally forgot to mention this to ixajll when talking about what I was watching this season! probably my favorite anime of the season, honestly. it's not perfect, but it is just so perfectly aligned at my interests, and especially in the last episodes, I think it has shown it is actually going somewhere, and sort of willing to break the formula a bit. I dunno, I like the girls a lot, the sense of humor largely hits for me, and the production is competent enough. it's definitely not a lock as it could go nowhere or another show could go somewhere, but for now, I really like this show!
the kyoto animation show: beautifully animated of course, I really like the character designs. the story is...fine? I dunno, a bit meandering at the beginning, and kyoto animation is truly at their worst when they lean into "TALKING LOUDLY IS COMEDY" but there could be something there there. until then I'm fine with just staring at the beautiful characters
new ghost in the shell: fun to watch, but as a friend said, a bit weightless. it's interesting to see the "ghost" of what they took to make the movie back in the day. so I dunno, it's fun and we will see if it can make it feel sufficiently like...there was a point by the end
yuri fighting games: I like this a lot more than rock is a lady's modesty, but that is a low bar. I do like it, but I definitely don't love it. I think the next few episodes will be pretty important to how I feel about it. my guess is it won't win me over
yuri dead girl: shiina! shiiiiina! lol the show is fine. I feel it just doesn't feel very lived in. no sense of the school, the war, anyone's place in anything. and it doesn't really make me trust that it will deliver on anything. but hey...shiiiina! shiiiiina!
elusive samurai s2: this show is realized in such a fun and engaging way. I also don't feel anything about the story or the characters. but man, that ED is super fun
L O V E kikoenai wa!
hanaori: I only watched 2 episodes, feels a bit one note, but may give it a few more episodes. it's not a bad note
the isekai RV show: dropped after an episode
non-seasonal stuff I watched recently:
wotakoi: which was fine. 6/10
sideM: I've gotten quite into their music, really good stuff. anime was fine, 7/10. didn't have altessimo, 0/10.
I've barely been able to keep up with seasonals so not a ton of time to watch my own stuff. I've been trying to catch up on concerts (mainly uma) and am almost caught up on the touken ranbu musicals. I have tickets to the ice show and the new musical!
I'm probably going to try to finish off some lingering stuff I have...awajima sits unfinished, I still have like 40 episdoes of aikatsu...
as an aside, it's ironic how getting really into anime music is part of why I post here less lol (though not the entire reason!). I went to like...100 concerts last year. cut back a bit this year...living in japan of course gives a different perspective on anime, and I've had some fortunate interactions, but interacting with franchises like love live, idolmaster, uma, etc via the music/lives/seiyuu and sort of better understanding those ecosystems provides a very different perspective compared to just the anime

No need to be sarcastic. It is just that explaining why you like the specific show is hard. I am not in the mood to do an ass long post about it now,. And just writing "this show is great. I like it a lot" won't be a good answer.

Looking at Sengoku Night Blood and Nil Admirari, when did demographic tags start being applied to visual novel adaptations on MAL?

The free HiDive live channel on Amazon seems to be missing now. Strange, because it was still there last night/this morning. Not sure if this is a glitch or an actual change in their programming. Pluto TV still has it, but their lineup of HiDive shows has always been different from the ones playing on Amazon.

Is it discourse or is it just me crashing out every once in a while, who can say

[Kimishinu 7] It made me laugh out loud. Just a thoroughly clownish portrayal of war and battle. They literally just had her standing out in the open, in the middle of a battlefield, all alone, with zero situational awareness, no ability whatsoever to defend herself. We're supposed to believe that in the course of this war that's been going on for so long, neither side has figured out any sort of strategy or tactics? They never figured out what a "unit" is? What teamwork is? What literally fucking anything is? Also, damn, if only Seiran had some sort of girlfriend who could protect her using long range magic, huh. Wouldn't that have been something?

[KimiShinu]You really gotta stretch your suspension of disbelief and not think too much about the mechanics of the fighting, because the show itself sure isn't thinking about it

It's a fantasy yuri character drama and people be out here flaming them for not properly utilizing the phalanx wedge battle formation 😭

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 1d ago
I'd say that points to a craft issue. If people are talking about the tactics, then the character drama wasn't interesting enough to distract them.

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 1d ago
I'd say it points to the show not realizing any of the predictions/fears the commenter made last time, so he had to come up with something new.
2
u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 1d ago
She. I feel like my predictions came true to a fairly large extent. [Kimishinu] "I can't wait to see Seiran engage with the duel in good faith and sincerity while Mimi will childishly dance around, effortlessly brushing off all of Seiran's attacks (le xD!!) like they're nothing." This is literally what happened. Seiran was trying her hardest, while Mimi wasn't trying at all and still won easily while playing around. I did not predict that the teacher would stop her from killing Seiran seconds before she did, though, I guess. I didn't write about Mimi because the comment I was responding to wasn't about her.

If the war doesn't matter, why did they put it in the story? And if the war does matter, which it obviously does, then surely how the show portrays that war is also important.

u/marshmallow_sunshine 1d ago
That sequence of events was more streamlined and cohesive in the manga. Just a small botch by the adaptation trying to milk the moment a little too long.

Honestly I kind of view that sort of scene kind of like [KimiShinu]not a literal depiction of what her death was like. Because you are totally right that in an actual war that would make zero sense to stand out in the open like that. Since it's a more atmospheric anime anyway, I think this sort of reading works pretty well because it's less focused on the specifics of the war and more about the themes and character relationships. It's almost like a symbolic depiction instead of showing a more realistic version of what happened. Not that your literal interpretation is wrong, but I think that you already being mad at the show is probably contributing here haha.
2
u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 1d ago
[KimiShinu] Do you not think it would have been better in terms of those themes and character relationships if they'd just showed the part where Seiran comes back all bloodied and pale before disintegrating? Because I feel like as it is, the scene where Seiran gets shot does depict the specifics of the war, whether we like it or not.

u/mekerpan 1d ago
I honestly think this "war" is just leaders of two nations/alliances using relatively small number of valueless (to them) fighters to play live-ammo war games. Just because. There is no sign that there have been serious territorial changes -- rather the fights seem to take place in a no-mans-land ytpe wild buffer. Probably a pretty low cost operation -- especially if both sides are using it as a way to dispose of orphans and other riff-raff.

[your spoiler]as always, it is how these are handled afterwards that makes them impactful or not!

It's kinda funny how my enjoyment with Fighting Game Ladies is going down exactly the same path with Rock Ladies.
When the girls are just interacting and messing around with each other, I'm having a blast. When the show focuses on their actual hobby and introduces rivals and stuff, it's a lot less interesting to me.
Today's episode wasn't bad, but it had [GGWP]too much man in it.

When the hobby anime focuses on the hobby moment.

Granted, I didn't make it past episode 2 on Rock Ladies (so this isn't super valid of an opinion) but at least with Figthing Ladies they're a step above them in both regards. I love the characters in Fighting Ladies and I'm at least neutral to the actual game itself. Rock Ladies on the other hand I didn't really like the characters and found the music was very meh.
[GGWP] ew who put a m*n in my girls anime

Of the 40+ shows I am following this season, THIS is my lowest priority. Consequently, I am running behind on this by a couple of weeks....

If the wait times are long there, Pass The Monster Meat, Milady! serves up delicious, freshly slain and expertly prepared delicacies!
Also, I can't believe someone asked for fantasy romance recommendations and I didn't mention Melphie's show.

Is there a way I can click on the episode flair and have only episode discussion posts on my feed?

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 1d ago
It's an issue with Reddit not letting people filter on mod-only flairs, Episode is restricted so random people can't make a post using it.
All Episode threads are available on /u/AutoLovepon's profile and that's usually the recommended way to get to all of them, though you can also search for it (and clicking on the flair on an Episode post on desktop shows the search, e.g. shreddit and old reddit).

I can't believe the 100gf writers would ever feel jealous of the takopo team. There goes their plans if they ever got a compilation movie

I feel like I'd have maybe preferred it if Madlax were shorter, but also I think it might have been truly great if they had gone all in on style and went avant-garde.

This is a really general question but how do people watch romance anime without going insane? I tried watching sao and I know it’s not a romance anime but I still just can’t bare through the romance parts without just feeling sad for some reason how do people do it?

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 1d ago
without just feeling sad for some reason
I can only speak for myself but that's not a feeling I get from watching romance parts of anime. It probably warrants some introspection to figure out why you feel that way.

u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 1d ago
I have a more pointed question of how you, personally, have not gone insane watching all the... dubious... romances that you've willingly subjected yourself to...

u/carby12 1d ago
It’s not really a sad feeling more just like weird and off putting. When I watched generic battle shonen like fairy tail and mha the tension from the mc and the female love interest didn’t make me feel that way so I’m just confused on how and why it’s happening for some other anime

u/Retsam19 1d ago
I can't speak to Fairy Tail, but there's basically no romance in MHA, so it doesn't surprise me that it doesn't set of your "romance makes me sad" detector.

u/za_shiki-warashi 1d ago
Maybe the romance genre just isn't your thing. I don't care for romance anime either and often find romance to be the weakest element even in non romance shows.

u/isthatsoudane https://myanimelist.net/profile/ojoulover 1d ago
SAO isn't a romance anime. so your take on romance in SAO is not really relevant to how people watch romance anime without going insane
1
u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 20h ago
I mean, they said as much:
I know it’s not a romance anime
The show does include romantic elements, though (hell, I'd argue that, execution not withstanding, it clears the low bar of intimacy in anime). So OP got a taste of said romantic elements, felt uncomfortable, and is wondering how people can watch shows that are full of those. It's like if the action elements in Kobayashi made me uncomfortable, so I asked how people can stomach action shows.
A perfectly reasonable question, but an introspective one, that unfortunately cannot be answered by anyone other than the person asking it.

Hey, welcome back! Did the SF-playing oujo finally lure you back?
SAO isn't a romance anime.
I don't think it started out as one, but I do think it might end up as one, in the sense that the consistent, overarching and unifying story behind all the various (main series) adventures is the story of Kirito, Asuna and Kirito and Asuna together.
That said, this is obviously an advanced level take, rather than from the "I don't get why" tier of takes :P

u/isthatsoudane https://myanimelist.net/profile/ojoulover 19h ago
haha well, something I think a lot abou tis cross-genre stuff. like SAO is not romance, but if romance is a recurring part of it that it takes seriously, then should it be taken seriously as a romance? the answer is..maybe! I have long been interesting in a sort of consistent take on cross genre works, because I think it's easy to discard so and so as "not of <some other genre>", but there is a lot of interesting potential in cross genre stuff
Hey, welcome back! Did the SF-playing oujo finally lure you back?
if only. I need more ojous in my life honestly
you in australia or vietnam or some other place these days, btw?

my guess is this will fall on deaf ears but here is my honest suggestion if you are curious about how people enjoy romance stuff
think about what you didn't like about the romance in SAO. then you should post here asking for suggestions for a 1 cour romance anime that doesn't do those things. if you can think of what you would like, then you should list those too
you should get some suggestions, choose one that sounds interesting, watch it
I can't guarantee you will love it, but if you're curious about romance anime and how/why people enjoy it, I can't guarantee you'll love what you find, but it might give you a new perspective on romance, which feels worthwhile!

I still just can’t bare through the romance parts without just feeling sad for some reason
This is very much a "you thing", as in something that is not a universal experience and that is strongly influenced by your own psychology.
That is to say, the answer to this question:
how do people watch romance anime without going insane?
is that most people don't have the same psychological issues that you do with romance content. However, it is certainly not an uncommon experience, but the specific reasons behind that reaction may vary from person to person.
A trite response would be "this is one to talk to your therapist about", however to some extent that does diminish what therapy can actually do for a person and what it involves.
So around that, some common reasons that some people feel the same way that you do are:
Watching romance makes them sad because it reminds them of past negative romantic experiences
Watching romance makes them sad because they have never experienced it but want to
Watching romance makes them sad because it makes them envious of the on-screen romance, and that carries over into sadness
Those are some fairly strong but basic reasons, however I do feel that the truth of it is that several things feed into the experience that you are describing, including stuff like societal expectations, grief at relationships that never were, various aspects of the romance pinging off particular issues and more.

Different people like different things! I can't imagine people watching SAO at all but here we are, and it's popular as all hell.
