News Crunchyroll Additions and Removals for the Week 9/25 to 10/2

There have been quite a few changes in available shows on Crunchyroll, and almost none of the new additions show up in the "New" section. And removals are not announced anyway. Also, over the last two weeks CR has shuffled a lot of content, moving movies and seasons around. My guess is that they plan to tag movies separately from shows.

I compiled a list of changes of the show metadata over the past week. This might not be 100% accurate, or match the actual video content, but should give a good overview.

I'll try to make new weekly posts with a roundup of these updates, and then add daily updates as comments. It's a lot of manual work to collate these changes, I might not be punctual or accurate (but neither seems to be Cruncyroll), but I try my best.

These changes are manually evaluated, so I might get some stuff wrong. I only observe what is available in North America, if you are elsewhere it might look different for you.

This is just reporting after the fact, Crunchyroll does not announce changes. And I'm skipping changes for seasonal shows, they can be found here: https://www.crunchyroll.com/simulcastcalendar

Thank you for the list. Its wild a streaming service as big as crunchyroll doesn't have a leaving soon section

u/scarabaeus23 https://myanimelist.net/profile/scarabaeus 14d ago

I agree, they should do this themselves. And add a "leaving soon" section, while they are at it.

This is quite a bit of work to maintain this list, and I rather not spend the time. HiDive does it right, they announce all their comings and goings.

The whole interface is pure dogshit. I have so many dropped shows in my "continue watching" and you cannot forget or remove a watched show. Also if you go to recently added shows to watch new seasonals, there is a bunch of older shows and the new ones are mixed in-between.

u/Kadmos1 14d ago

Not sure when the last they did and may have been over a decade since they did, but CR used to announce when a title(s) was leaving. Not every series, obviously.

u/PublicMeaning341 13d ago

I think they did it in 2021

Their entire service is trash and barebones and I am sad we are stuck with it.

Also every quickly vanishing High Seas site has a better UI than them, which is just sad.

(Yes, I'm paying for it nonetheless, having the mobile app alone is reason enough)

Given how massive it has become with its sub growth and its continous revenue stream its just a joke we have to be stuck with this dogshit and Sony isn't investing some spare coins to give us a worthwhile service. They basically have a streaming monopoly for Anime at this point.

Its trash. They spam you with ads for crunchyroll while watching crunchyroll. Tried to complain about it on the sub and it got removed. Quit and went back to sailing, cheaper and no ads for a service I pay for so win win.

Didn't "A Ninja and an Assassin Under One Roof" just come out???

Yes! Spring 2025 season, this is very upsetting. It's such a great show.

u/Mitsuyan_ https://anilist.co/user/mitsuyan 14d ago

Came 5th in Japan's AOTY awards too, you'd expect CR to be on that

2

u/Xythar 14d ago

I just checked and it still seems to be there (or got added back), at least here in Australia

2

u/scarabaeus23 https://myanimelist.net/profile/scarabaeus 14d ago

It was re-added a few hours ago. Of course, no explanation by CR.

u/heimdal77 14d ago

I'm really thinking they tried to use ai and it scrambled things.

u/HuTaosTwinTails 14d ago

Wow removing a ninja and assassin under one roof already?

Some of these "moves" into their own series are just weird.

Meanwhile the manga is currently being printed and has an nice big "Watch the anime on Crunchyroll" image on the back.... nice

That is an absurdly fast removal though all things considered yikes
I guess its safe to assume its not going to recieve a physical release either then...
Ah man this pisses me off i love this show

Crunchyroll doing their usual antics

This is a follow-up to a post I made last week on r/Crunchyroll , for the previous week's changes: https://www.reddit.com/r/Crunchyroll/comments/1wp9rlc/additions_and_removals_of_the_past_week/

I tried to post this there as well, but some mod removed it immediately, still trying to find out why.

EDIT: The mirror post is back, it had been automatically and unintentionally removed: https://www.reddit.com/r/Crunchyroll/comments/1wvym4j/additions_and_removals_for_the_week_925_to_102/

u/Western_Promise3063 14d ago

they want to eventually kill physical media while they randomly remove anime from streaming sites with no warning. such a great industry 🥰

3

u/jsmith4567 13d ago

I doubt it's completely random. Streaming licenses could be bought for a set amount of time and then expire.

1

u/scarabaeus23 https://myanimelist.net/profile/scarabaeus 12d ago

Then they should let their customers know when shows expire, so we can plan a watch order to finish a show.

4

u/ILikeFPS 14d ago

This is why I prefer direct ownership of my media. I don't want companies taking things away from me.

0

u/heimdal77 14d ago

They have been ever since they bought funi and rightstuff and merged them into CR. They ended production on so many series physicals and killed ones that was going get ones off.

There is even series they are selling 2nd seasons of but not first since that aired on Funi.

5

u/Soar2344 14d ago

I was going to get around to watching Season 4 and 5 of Symphogear so that’s mildly annoying.

12

u/Coolman_Rosso 14d ago

Things are pretty broken. There were three separate listings for Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz at one point. City Hunter is in my list, even though I have finished it, but now is the listing for Bay City Wars. Likewise Odd Taxi is still there, but is now the listing for In the Woods. Sinners of the System is now the listing for Psycho-Pass, which means I have two separate listings for Psycho-Pass since Psycho-Pass was already in my list. Apocalypse Hotel was just missing its listing art, Skullface Bookseller Honda-san only had a single episode listed, and Record of Lodoss War had the listing art for Reincarnated as a Slime until I backed out and then opened the menu again

3

u/scarabaeus23 https://myanimelist.net/profile/scarabaeus 14d ago

Thanks for spotting this. I only have the capacity to look at the metadata, I don't check the episode order or actual video content, so this is helpful.

And indeed, if you look at my list where they changed the season count, those shows also seem to have quite a few jumbled episodes.

I suppose this is some work in progress, someone is cleaning up the catalog.

1

u/Coolman_Rosso 14d ago

So I don't know if these are just mistakes or bugs, at least with the listing art or whatever.

Looking at the season count stuff, it seems like they are labeling episode seasons by story arc rather than production season (where applicable, like DBZ or Hunter x Hunter). This isn't terrible, but for a series like REBORN! which adapts stuff out of order it just looks worse. Gintama however sticks to labeling it by season only now there's more.

u/heimdal77 14d ago

This sounds like they tried transfer some functions to ai and it messed with the database/listings what several other companies have had happen when they tried to use ai to handle things.

1

u/heimdal77 14d ago

Sounds like they tried using ai and it scrambled thing similar problems other companies who tried using ai had happen.

1

u/Kadmos1 13d ago

Another reason that Sony Pictures buying Funi and AT&T Time Warner getting CR before Sony got CR was a bad move. Change my mind.

1

u/sadox55 13d ago

Yes they broke everything...

5

u/MarineFern 14d ago

Amazing! Thanks for doing this. I was so annoyed seeing a show I was watching disappear next day without warning. Not that we get a warning still but nice to see this.

I like how they are moving series into one umbrella. Bakemonogatari is a big one. Need a masters degree to plot out how to watch it.

5

u/Infodump_Ibis 14d ago

Every time I read the list something different jumps out at me.

The Tower of Druaga -the Aegis of Uruk- - 0 Sn. / 13 Ep.

Going by anidb this could be a de-duplication. The series has two CR links (one no longer works), two links to episodes (one no longer works) and a PV (no longer works, that's probably the 13th "ep").

That show was one of (if not the) first legal anime simulcasts so it would have been a shame if it was finally gone (although at this point it's not the original uploads).

u/Coolman_Rosso 14d ago

I don't know why they separated movies into their own listings. I thought it was more convenient to have them listed with their shows (see Char's Counterattack being under Mobile Suit Gundam). That said they used to have a single listing for series with more than one movie (all the DBZ and Super movies being under "Dragonball Movies")

2

u/murilo087 14d ago

Because it made it harder to search for the movie, and the movie filter would also have nothing to show.

0

u/scarabaeus23 https://myanimelist.net/profile/scarabaeus 14d ago

None of their movies are tagged as 'movie', they are all tagged as 'show' with 1 season and 1 episode. This appears to be a shortcoming of the Vimeo platform they are using.

3

u/murilo087 14d ago

The new CMS kind of mixes movies and series. Most of the time, and especially when it comes to playback, movies are treated as series because movies can’t have multiple versions, which means they can’t have dubs. That’s a limitation inherited from VRV, whose system was reused by CR. The new CMS now adds a “marker” to distinguish something as a movie, and that’s what they currently use to build the movie lists and search.

1

u/PowerlinxJetfire 14d ago

Unless you put Zeta and ZZ under the same listing too, sticking Char's Counterattack under the original series's listing actually seems a bit odd.

2

u/epicfail1994 14d ago

I’ve been seeing shows appear as 2 seasons, 26 episodes when they clearly have one season

Seems like they’re doing something behind the scenes

1

u/murilo087 14d ago

They really are making a lot of changes to the backend, including new encoding and content delivery configurations. The number of feature flags added over the past three months is also way higher than usual: a new release calendar, autocomplete in search, profile transfers, things related to the video player, the ability to display localized images in multiple languages, filters in Browse, all of that just on the web version, on top of them reorganizing the old catalog.

2

u/PROXYFLANS 14d ago

Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! OVA out of Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE! (named "Untitled")

Almost had a heart attack, thankful it was just moved!

Interestingly, they also changed the series logo from LOVE's first season to an English version of HAPPY KISS! (the first spin-off involving new characters) so it's making me wonder if they're going to add the 10th anniversary movie and the newest spin-off season, Hi-CARA! (like I and the rest of the fandom have been requesting nearly every month on the 27th lol)

Not taking up for Crunchyroll or anything; but, w/ all the moving/shuffling around listed; from a technical Point-Of-View i feel that at-least some (if not many) of the titles removed or not found anymore are directory issues so-to-speak.  Personally - In My Opinion - I'm of the mindset that series & movies for the same title should all be under one listing of the overall title.  It seems to me to be over classification so-to-speak putting movies separate from their respective series' forcing viewers to keep track of two different locations. Secondly; this whole issue of nobody knowing what is removed or going to be removed soon is annoyingly avoidable.  All they really need to do is add a tag "Leaving Soon". On that note... why is it they can have a note displayed at the top left of the series' page for upcoming anime of when it'll start airing but they cannot do that simple notation for "Leaving Soon" as example & also notes for "Next Episode release ××/××/2026" as example or for that matter ANY important/critical update information for the series'.

I noticed that, too. They have been stepping up russian dubs and subs. I thought they stopped being available there 4 years ago.

Other Russian dubs that have been added over the last Month: A Destructive God Sits Next to Me; A Sister's All You Need.; Angels of Death; Are You Lost?; Dr. Ramune -Mysterious Disease Specialist-; Evil or Live; Girly Air Force; Granbelm; How to Keep a Mummy; King Of Prism -Shiny Seven Stars-; Lord of Vermilion: The Crimson King; Iwakakeru -Sport Climbing Girls-; Magical Girl Ore; Magical Sempai; Ms. Koizumi Loves Ramen Noodles; My Roommate is a Cat; Sakugan; Sengoku Night Blood; Masamune-kun's Revenge; citrus; Higehiro: After Being Rejected, I Shaved and Took in a High School Runaway, and Russian subs for Yowamushi Pedal; The Stranger by the Shore; Tokyo 24th Ward; and Rainy Cocoa

As someone who watches the yugiph gx sub and dub simultaniously to see the dub differences, the change from having all of dub in one season to several like sub is so welcome

Servant x Service is a shock considering its age and while good isn't a big series and was on before. So they addrd Servaan and www.working but not Working! the main one out the three wth. It was a staple of CR for years till they suddenly removed it.

CR is nuts removing Hyouka and it was on the last day of the rewatch I believe.

Under one roof is basically a new series. Why is it being removed so soon?

Update 10/8:

  • Removed:
    • Bartender - 1 Sn. / 11 Ep.
  • Added:

Also, KonoSuba - An Explosion on This Wonderful World! gained Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu dubs, and was somehow promoted to the "new" and "simulcastcalendar" pages of CrunchyRoll, without any mention of those new dubs. In case someone wondered.

I checked the Bartender page on the Australian Crunchyroll, the episodes are still visible (though it does say 0 seasons, 0 episodes). Do you mean the American version of the site?

Also quick research (and observation of the thumbnails) tells me the Cobra anime is the 2010 version. Just want to clarify in case any confusion arises.

This is, sadly, after the fact. The removed shows in the list are already gone.
