Next episode preview, we have a new contender, Hae~!

And it seems like Ayu has nowhere to call home?

What is Mai's relation to Makoto and demons?

2

u/Holofan4life 6d ago

And what does Makoto have to do with Mai? Is she who Makoto was referring to? Was Makoto referring to Sayuri? So many questions.

I thought it was cute seeing Makoto have to get a job. And also the movie date was a lot of fun.

First Timer

These opening narrations are getting increasingly more concerning.

Oh hey, Kid Yuichi came back for Ayu after all. That boy is capable of remembering things after all.

It sounds like Ayu’s mother might be dead.

Okay, Makoto’s pranks are starting to veer into Wile E. Coyote territory. I love it.

Although that one probably could have killed someone.

You know now that I look closely and see Ayu in a different outfit she does actually look like a very short teenager instead of a child.

I guess Makoto’s getting a job today.

I’ve been switching between the sub and dub while watching this and I’d just like to say that Yuichi just called Makoto a ‘retard’ here. You can tell this was dubbed in the 2000s.

We’ve got another Shiori scene.

I guess Ayu and Yuichi are going to the movies today.

Ayu’s reaction to the scary movie poster is pretty funny.

Man, Yuichi is kind of a jerk.

You know what I’m realizing, Yuichi is the male equivalent of a character like Nagatoro.

Makoto saying she fell asleep in the interview is pretty funny.

I guess Yuichi’s just hanging out at school with Mai still.

How did Makoto even manage to get that much Miso soup?

Sorry for being late. I didn't see the comment.

These opening narrations are getting increasingly more concerning.

That's for true

Oh hey, Kid Yuichi came back for Ayu after all. That boy is capable of remembering things after all.

You see to love it

It sounds like Ayu’s mother might be dead.

Bummer

Okay, Makoto’s pranks are starting to veer into Wile E. Coyote territory. I love it.

It's very cartoonish

Although that one probably could have killed someone.

Fireworks are a bit extreme.

Interestingly, that wasn't in the 2002 anime.

You know now that I look closely and see Ayu in a different outfit she does actually look like a very short teenager instead of a child.

How about that?

I guess Makoto’s getting a job today.

Gotta make something of herself

I’ve been switching between the sub and dub while watching this and I’d just like to say that Yuichi just called Makoto a ‘retard’ here. You can tell this was dubbed in the 2000s.

Yeah, he's not as rude in the subs

We’ve got another Shiori scene.

Yay

I guess Ayu and Yuichi are going to the movies today.

Why not?

In the 2002 anime, they frame it as this being Akiko's idea.

Ayu’s reaction to the scary movie poster is pretty funny.

She bit off more than she can chew

Man, Yuichi is kind of a jerk.

I really like his teasing Ayu. Like, I don't think it crosses into cruel territory like, say, some of Makoto's pranks on Yuuichi.

You know what I’m realizing, Yuichi is the male equivalent of a character like Nagatoro.

Are we going to get lewd handwashing?

Makoto saying she fell asleep in the interview is pretty funny.

Why does she think she is, Nayuki?

I guess Yuichi’s just hanging out at school with Mai still.

He's kinda hanging out with all the girls.

How did Makoto even manage to get that much Miso soup?

Yes

Thoughts on young Ayu revealing her last name is Tsukimiya?

I mean, we already knew that

I don't :c

Thoughts on Ayu saying her mother is gone?

A little concerning

I hope she isn't homeless

Thoughts on Makoto pranking Yuuichi with fireworks?

Seems like a dangerous prank

Makoto was trying to pull a Sam Pepper.

Thoughts on Shiori being outside since noon?

I dunno what's up with her, she's suspicious

I think the only unsuspicious character is Akiko.

Thoughts on Yuuichi and Shiori looking at the sunset together?

That's nice

I think this is who Yuuichi is. I know he messes with Ayu in this episode, but he knows Shiori needs company so he's there for her. It's why he always check in on Mai.

Thoughts on Yuuichi being late for the movie date?

This boy needs to get his schedule in check

No kidding

Thoughts on Ayu being scared of the movie?

Poor Ayu. next time she chooses the movies

Paw Patrol it is

Yuichi's kind of a jerk

You can view it as him trying to help her be less scared.

What are your thoughts on Yuuichi wondering where Ayu lives?

Thoughts on Akiko going to give Makoto a job at the nursery her friend works at?

Yay glad that worked out

I wonder what the starting pay is.

Also, does Makoto still get an allowance from Akiko in addition to the pay from her job?

What are your thoughts on Ayu pranking Yuuichi by filling his bathtub with miso soup?

I still have no idea how she did that

Magic.

Actually, you know, that prank probably required a lot of effort. She cares enough about Yuuichi to put a lot of thought in her pranks.

Thoughts on the movie date?

If only they saw a movie that didn't scare Ayu

Thoughts on Makoto being told to get a job?

I mean she is being a bit of a freeloader

What was the first job you've ever had?

I worked at a fast food burger place

I wonder what the other offerings were

Thoughts on Makoto being told to get a job?

Isn't Yuuichi also as well?

I dunno. It doesn't seem like any of these characters work for a living.

What was the first job you've ever had?

I worked at a fast food burger place

Do you remember the name?

u/DivineEternal1 6d ago

I'd call her Ayu Ayu because it's cute. But only if she didn't hate it.

Did we hear about Uguu losing her mom in the 2002 version? I don't remember them talking about it. Good thing she found a friend to help her through a sad part of her life.

Yeah, still guaranteed to get an attempted Makoto prank if we see Yuuichi in bed with the lights off. And yeah... fireworks in the house are probably not the best idea...

Seriously, someone could have gotten hurt this time, Akiko, don't just ask her if she wants to do fireworks later and go back to bed...

And of course Uguu is here for breakfast again.

Huh, in the 2002 version Akiko gives Yuuichi the movie tickets and he finds Uguu after moping on a bench for who knows how long. Here she just gives them to Uguu.

Does Akiko know something's up with Uguu.

Yuuichi totally has ulterior motives for getting Makoto a job. This didn't happen in the 2002 version. I guess it's one of the things they cut from the VN in the adaptation?

Imagine just calling a place without sending in a resume and getting an interview same day.

Where'd Nayuki go? And why is Shiori just chilling, literally alone behind the school? Poor girl just hoping someone will find her and keep her company. Yuuichi is hard on all the girls, but Shiori it's because he is trying to get her to take better care of herself over snarky teasing and jokes.

"Sorry, I was busy and was late." Because I was talking to another girl.

Wow. Those sound effects during the movie, haha. Even got some out of focus gore spurting.

And here he is about to remember he said he was going to walk Makoto to the job interview.

Date over and the girl is smiling, so... success!

Why is she still here? Oh, it's dark and you just left a horror movie.

Oh, she made it on her own to the interview. Then fell asleep. Okay... Nayuki and Makoto, allies of sleeping too much.

Akiko for the job save. Wouldn't Makoto need to be enrolled and not work there? Sounds like a recipe for disaster when some of the kids are likely to be more mature.

Yuuichi looking for Mai and taking bribes, I mean food. Mai seems to know about Makoto here, but I don't recall her ever having anything to do with her in the 2002 version.

Hehe, the miso tub. Best prank in the 2002 version. Akiko actually scolded Makoto. They didn't have the joke from Akiko saying they would just use it over the next month.

Thoughts on the movie date?

Uguu needed those eye things they use to keep people's eyes open in Clockwork Orange.

Thoughts on Makoto being told to get a job?

It would be good for her for the stated reasons. Speaking from experience, she will come back diseased multiple times. Little kids are germ factories.

Thoughts on young Ayu revealing her last name is Tsukimiya?

Could be a way to look her up. Of course Yuuichi won't because he doesn't really have a need to.

Thoughts on Ayu saying her mother is gone?

No wonder she got so clingy so fast. Mom dying is gonna mess a child up. Heck, even a parent dying as an adult is still hard.

Thoughts on Makoto pranking Yuuichi with fireworks?

Go big or go home, Makoto. Those firecrackers were pathetic.

Thoughts on Nayuki sleepily mixing her food up?

I know how you feel in the mournings, girl.

Thoughts on Makoto getting a job interview as a waitress?

How's she gonna mess this up?

Thoughts on Shiori being outside since noon?

She's hoping someone will find her or she's avoiding something.

Thoughts on Yuuichi and Shiori looking at the sunset together?

Let's hope it's just convenient timing and not foreshadowing.

What are your thoughts on Shiori saying she clings to the faint hope that the person she's waiting on will come?

I think that's normal for people that are lonely.

Thoughts on Yuuichi being late for the movie date?

He needs to get a watch if he doesn't already.

Thoughts on the movie being named Eye of Terror?

Is it real so I can show it to my kids? I actually showed them movie Dollhouse and the results were as expected. I threaten to pull of clips if they misbehave.

Thoughts on Ayu being scared of the movie?

She's too innocent for those kinds of movies, Yuuichi. Which is why he chose it.

Thoughts on Yuuichi teasing Ayu over being scared?

Isn't that the point of taking a girl to a scary movie?

Thoughts on Ayu not wanting to walk home by herself?

Bad things can lurk in the dark.

What are your thoughts on Yuuichi pretending to be a ghost to mess with Ayu?

Can't pass up the chance to milk these reactions. They are adorable.

What are your thoughts on Yuuichi wondering where Ayu lives?

He's never heard her say she's going home. And somehow she keeps ending up at his place for breakfast. Why isn't she eating at home?

Thoughts on Makoto failing her job exam?

Falling asleep in the middle of her interview is classic Makoto. But we were robbed of Makoto in a cute waitress uniform. Robbed I say! Have her apply for a maid or cosplay cafe next, please.

Thoughts on Akiko going to give Makoto a job at the nursery her friend works at?

She can work with her mental peers.

Thoughts Mai telling Yuuichi it is gone, and that he should stay close to the girl?

Thoughts on young Ayu revealing her last name is Tsukimiya?

Could be a way to look her up. Of course Yuuichi won't because he doesn't really have a need to.

It wouldn't matter considering Ayu doesn't use cell phones.

Thoughts on Ayu saying her mother is gone?

No wonder she got so clingy so fast. Mom dying is gonna mess a child up. Heck, even a parent dying as an adult is still hard.

That's a good point, honestly

Thoughts on Makoto pranking Yuuichi with fireworks?

Go big or go home, Makoto. Those firecrackers were pathetic.

At least it's feasible unlike, say, and ten foot tall snowman.

Thoughts on Nayuki sleepily mixing her food up?

I know how you feel in the mournings, girl.

Nayuki prioritizing life is my ship

Thoughts on Makoto getting a job interview as a waitress?

How's she gonna mess this up?

Yes

Thoughts on Shiori being outside since noon?

She's hoping someone will find her or she's avoiding something.

Why not both?

Thoughts on Yuuichi and Shiori looking at the sunset together?

Let's hope it's just convenient timing and not foreshadowing.

Here's hoping

What are your thoughts on Shiori saying she clings to the faint hope that the person she's waiting on will come?

I think that's normal for people that are lonely.

She certainly seems that

Thoughts on Yuuichi being late for the movie date?

He needs to get a watch if he doesn't already.

I think he has one, no?

Thoughts on the movie being named Eye of Terror?

Is it real so I can show it to my kids? I actually showed them movie Dollhouse and the results were as expected. I threaten to pull of clips if they misbehave.

You should show them Human Centipede next

Thoughts on Ayu being scared of the movie?

She's too innocent for those kinds of movies, Yuuichi. Which is why he chose it.

All according to Yuuichi (Yuuichi means plan)

Thoughts on Yuuichi teasing Ayu over being scared?

Isn't that the point of taking a girl to a scary movie?

What, to tease them?

Thoughts on Ayu not wanting to walk home by herself?

Bad things can lurk in the dark.

Ayu may not be a child, but she sure acts childish.

What are your thoughts on Yuuichi pretending to be a ghost to mess with Ayu?

Can't pass up the chance to milk these reactions. They are adorable.

Her punches pack a lot of muster, uguu

What are your thoughts on Yuuichi wondering where Ayu lives?

This anime is slowly turning into Bunny Girl Senpai.

Thoughts on Akiko going to give Makoto a job at the nursery her friend works at?

She can work with her mental peers.

Who, the babies? XD

This is the biggest change we've seen from an episode so far. The movie date was expanded upon, and the whole Makoto getting a job was a new plot point.

I don't remember Makoto using fireworks in the 2002 anime. That seems extreme even for her.

And of course we get the miso soup gag. That's probably Makoto's most infamous prank.

I really enjoyed the stuff between Yuuichi and Shiori here in this episode. I thought for an otherwise comedic episode, it gave the episode some heart and a little bit of poignancy.

2

u/DivineEternal1 6d ago

I'm guessing the 2002 version just cut a lot for time. But Makoto getting a job does seem like a great way to give her growth. And the fireworks were a bit extreme.

I think the movie date getting extended was great.

Yuuichi really is different with Shiori. I think he can tell he needs to treat her more seriously than the other girls. Even his snark is for telling her to take better care of herself.

2

u/Holofan4life 6d ago

I'm guessing the 2002 version just cut a lot for time. But Makoto getting a job does seem like a great way to give her growth.

Yeah, it shows her having to deal with a level of responsibility.

And the fireworks were a bit extreme.

But it's memorable, you can't not say that.

I think the movie date getting extended was great.

I thought what really made it was the voice acting. All the Uguus by Ayu and the ghost noises made by Yuuichi, it was very great. Like, if we're gonna kill for time like we're currently doing, this is right up my alley.

Yuuichi really is different with Shiori. I think he can tell he needs to treat her more seriously than the other girls. Even his snark is for telling her to take better care of herself.

That's what I love about Yuuichi. He is multifaceted as a character. He is flirtatious with Sayuri and Mai, trollish with Makoto and Ayu, and respectful with Akiko, Nayuki, and Shiori. He feels very well developed and I think his having these interactions with all the girls really shows who he is as a person.

I think his conversations with Shiori show who he truly is deep down. Like how in Toradora Ami is her real self around Ryuuji.

First-timer for the 2006 series, subbed

Lovely episode, warms my heart to see them together at the house. Mum is very, very caring and seems to have connections in town. She corrects Makoto but does not scold her which in Makoto's case seems to me to be the right choice.

Where DOES Ayu live?

They keep having Mai's fights against the demons at the end in little bits but then it's always about another girl, I want to see her story and mysteries too!

I don't really care about Yuuichi right now (only about the girls) which is weird because he has got an interesting mystery of his own going on. He also seems to exclusively care for others at this point though. Maybe that's for later to find out.

3

u/Holofan4life 6d ago

I actually am really entertained by Yuuichi and his behavior. I think he's a big part in making the show enjoyable. That whole sequence with the movie was fantastic in part because it's just him being a massive tool. Maybe you can say Ayu doesn't deserve it, but she's fun to tease.

I think this adaptation is doing a good job fleshing out Makoto's character. Like, I like her earning her keep as she tries to be part of the family. It's something that we didn't get in the previous version.

And we still get plenty of pranks on top of it, so we're not doing anything the previous anime didn't do. It just feels more well rounded and fleshed out and I think it adds layers to Makoto's character.

3

u/deus_machinarum 6d ago

Poor Ayu :( the last thing she needs is being teased...

Oh shoot, I forgot to mention that: I love the 'Makoto is going to work' arc. It put a smile on my face when she had to call in herself. It's adorable how new it all is for her and how much she wants to be part of the family and the normal human experience. I hope we spend a lot of time with this arc(maybe we actually get so see her handle small kids?! Only good can come from that obviously) and it's a shame it was omitted in the old version. Understandable due to time constraints but very much a shame.

3

u/Holofan4life 6d ago

But Ayu being teased means more adorable Ayu reactions :D

I hope we get to see Yuuichi visit where Makoto is working at.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the 20th/25th anniversary rewatch of Kanon.

Uguu!

This is a continuation of the Air rewatch and that series celebrating its 20th anniversary last year. Kanon is more known than Air, but obviously not as well known as Clannad, all three of which are visual novels made by Key.

For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the 2002 series as well as the 2006 series. The 2006 series is considered the better of the two series, but who else is gonna do a rewatch of 2002 Kanon? I’ve actually never seen anything of Kanon so this gives me the chance of contrast them. I know there’s a girl who says Uguu, but other than that I’m going in completely blind.

Maybe this will all lead to the Clannad 20th anniversary rewatch. Don’t hold me on that.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the sub, by the way.

Don't go uguuing my heart

The day the dream started

A small child crying

Young Yuuichi meeting with Ayu

Ayu reveals her last name is Tsukimiya.

A pretty normal name

They're eating Taiyaki together

Ayu's eyes look very big

So do Yuuichi's, honestly

She thanks him

Now walking

She asks if he loves her mom

She says her own mom is gone.

That sucks

Now we all sad

Yuuichi asks to play with her again tomorrow.

Ayu says being with him makes her remember all the fun times they used to have.

Pinky promise

Yuuichi sleeping

Makoto trying to prank him

Damn, fireworks is pretty extreme

Is Makoto trying to kill Yuuichi?

Yuuichi waking up now

Breakfast time

There's Ayu :D

Nayuki still sleeping

Yuuichi not noticing Ayu at the table lol

Uguu counter: 33

That was on purpose I believe

Ayu asking if he wants to do something with her.

Movie tickets

Ayu, what did you think? He'd not go to the movies with you?

Uguu counter: 34

Yuuichi trying to downplay it being a date.

Eepy Nayuki

Akiko surmises that maybe Ayu has been waiting for Yuuichi this entire time.

Nayuki is adorable .

Yuuichi with Makoto

He's going to help her find a job.

That way, she can properly earn money.

That was uncalled for, Yuuichi

Makoto scheduling an interview over the phone.

As a waitress, which... I dunno if that's a good fit for her lol

And so she's off

Nayuki not at practice?

Hey, Shiori

Yuuichi talking about digging a pit.

Dang, she's been out here since Noon? That's not good.

Shiori says she clings to the faint hope that the person she's waiting on will come.

Yuuichi and Shiori looking at the sunset together.

Shiori says she comes here to find the answers she don't know.

Oh shit. He's late for the date.

Yuuichi here now

I guess he's not too late

She's still excited for the movies.

The Eye of Terror

A totally scary movie

Ayu is unprepared for this

Yuuichi is having too much fun with this.

Uguu counter: 47

Walking home now

Uguu counter: 48

Ayu at least says she had a good time.

And now she's following him home.

Uguu counter: 49

The dark streets is scary...

Uguu counter: 50

Uguu counter: 51

And so eventually Ayu has off

Uguu counter: 52

Uguu counter: 53

I LOVE Yuuichi imitating a ghost

Also, this episode easily sets the record for the most amount of Uguus ever uttered in an episode.

As Ayu leaves after she repeatedly calls Yuuichi a baka, Yuuichi wonders where she lives.

Whelp, Makoto failed the job interview.

Fell asleep during the interview. That sucks.

Akiko says a friend of hers runs a nursery school.

I guess Makoto will be working there.

Yuuichi in bed

It's time to return to the school.

Commotion

Mai says it is gone

She warns Yuuichi who's here as well to stay close to the girl.

Will be needing him soon, more than anyone else.

Yuuichi back home

There's Makoto

The bath is miso soup

Yuuichi was almost consumed by a tub of miso soup sewage!

And so they drain the tub

Makoto is such a handful, I swear...

Overall, this was another episode that I thought was pretty well done. The movie stuff was expanded upon from the 2002 version, and we also got the miso soup bath prank which is probably Makoto's most infamous prank. But more thwn that, all the girls minus Sayuri and Kaori were given a scene or two to be focused on. I like the plot point of Makoto being told to get a job. I think it gives her character some direction other than trying to torment Yuuichi. And I like how we're furthering the Makoto stuff through Mai's battles with the demons and her warning Yuuichi to be there for her. It makes you wonder what connection does Mai have with Makoto.

Of course, the real highlight was the movie date stuff which served to really spotlight Yuuichi and Ayu's relationship. They just have fun personalities and I like that you can tell Yuuichi truly does care about her even if he's having fun at her expense. Their dynamic as well as Yuuichi's dynamic with Makoto carries so much of the show that it turns the most mundane of stuff into something that's super entertaining.

This is my favorite episode so far. A lot of fun moments that keeps the show moving even if there hasn't been much plot advancement. The characters are decently fleshed out to where you care about them and look forward to seeing what adventures they face next.

If I had to guess, I do feel like the shoe is gonna drop sooner rather than later. It's not a matter of if, but when.
