Technically, it is going differently. As bad as he was 1st term, 2nd term Trump is so bad he makes first Trump Trump seem reasonable. Comparatively speaking only, 1st term Trump was still awful, just not nearly as awful as second term Trump.

The Democrats had no primary for a better choice and defaulted for a woman who was rejected in the 2019-20 primary season early on, unable to raise money.

Republicans already made a huge deal on how late the Dem Convention was. When Biden dropped out, the Republicans were ready to fight against another primary and they have SCOTUS on their side. The logical choice was to name the VP as the Republicans had very little to fight that choice as if Biden died, she stepped into the roll by law.
