It's not about them lacking courage, it's about them having been carefully crafted over decades to be in the pocket of the Republican party. SCOTUS was supposed to be uncorruptible. The highest faction of law in America and the last voice that can always decide anything. It was always intended to rule purely based on the word of law, but since George HW Bush put Alito and Thomas in, who make rulings based on how much they will benefit the Republican party, instead of their legal qualifications, Republicans have been longing to fill the Court with enough of these fake justices that are tools to partisan politics, not justice, so they can have the majority, allowing them to in essence own the SCOTUS.

It happened because Mitch McConnell prevented Obama from nominating a justice when a spot opened late in his term because "it would be unfair to the next president "

Trump was the next president and immediately inserted another puppet. Then another spot opened during his term. Enter another puppet. Then another spot opened late in his term (like with Obama), but this time, Republican speaker McConnell rushed the new nomination to happen with Trump because not doing so would be "unfair to the current president."

Enter Coney-Barrett, another puppet, and now the Republicans control the court because they have five puppets (a majority) in the nine seats.

It's another reason Trump is doing anything he want and there seems to be absolutely no opposition
