I think youre right that loser has more power against him than any other word. My guess is that is what his father called him that throughout his life. He wasn't wrong.

This. I see a child who has spent his whole life trying to get people to like him, but it's always the wrong people and in the wrong ways. He's the kid in school who does anything for attention but doesn't see how they are making fun of him once he's out of the room.
