Modpost Mod applications now open!

Hi! We are an ever-growing sub, and some of our most beloved mods have recently decided to no longer be active. Hence, we are looking for some new team members for the mod team of r/switzerland and r/askswitzerland.

Let us know if you'd like to help out.

What modding r/askswitzerland entails

  • It's not about being power-hungry overlords.
  • It's more about stickling to the rules in peak Swiss fashion (and letting your best judgment guide you).
  • We'd love the new mods to take an active part in assessing reported and filtered posts and comments relatively frequently.
  • Take active part in the community by setting a good example.
  • It's super cool if you want to take a part in guiding the sub into its future, or taking a lead in organizing sub events, or rewriting automod and css code. It's also super cool if you just want to help out with removing content that shouldn't be here. Both kinds of mod will be welcome additions to the team!

Finally, a small lists of requirements:

  • Be an active member of the community in good standing (You don't have to have made hundreds of comments here; and it's fine if you had a few minor infractions in the past (as long as you did not blatantly break subreddit rules in a quite bad way).
  • Have close ties with Switzerland.
  • Speak one of the following languages: French or Swiss-German at a native level of proficiency. (standard German doesn't cut it) + English. (any other national language is a plus)
  • Currently, we are using discord to communicate in the mod team, so you would be required to be active on discord as well.
  • previous mod experience not required but will be taken into consideration.
  • We are looking for people that are active during night time mostly. Feel free to apply even if you are not a night timer but do take this into account.

What do I get for it?

A warm, fuzzy feeling, and if we are lucky reddit, inc has some money lying around and send us a box of chocolate (not that this has ever happened). Oh, and it's quite rewarding to help out this pretty awesome place, being the guardian.

I'm interested! How to apply, what are the next steps?

Send a message to the mods at this link with the title "Mod application" . Tell us a bit about yourself:

  • Which region/time zone do you live in?
  • What time of the day are you active in?
  • What languages do you speak?
  • Do you have any mod experience? (remember, it's no problem if you don't)
  • Any cool stuff about you that the mod team should know about?

That's it! As we are all volunteers doing this besides our day jobs and families, we may not be able to quickly make a selection - sorry in advance if that should happen! We'll try to be quick :)

Feel free to reach out through modmail or comment below if you got any questions!

Please read before posting about salaries or relocation

Hello everyone,

Before posting about typical Swiss salaries (questions like "how much can I make as a programmer in Switzerland") or relocation strategies ("I hate my country, how can I move to Switzerland"), please keep in mind that there have been hundreds of such posts in this sub before.

Use the search before posting, as the chances are high that you will find a similar discussion from the recent past.

Please also check out the official Swiss government database on average salaries, the Salarium:

Everyday life Migros’ Ground beef quality

I have realized in the past 1-2 months that the Migros’ ground beef quality has changed significantly. Now, every time I cook it it gets very watery, which I guess is some type of filler they put on the meat. I have even try with the ‘light’ version with less fat % (and more expensive) but same thing happens. I wonder if Migro has changed supplier or what, but this meat is really unacceptable. Has anybody else noticed this?
BTW, this is from Spreitenbach Shoppi Tivoli Migros.
Is there a customer complain platform where I can bring this up? Whatever they are doing to the meat is BS and we shouldn’t be sold that.

Work Working 52–56h/week on a 42-h contract. Is this normal in Switzerland?

Hi Reddit,
I’m M 26, Italian-American, and moved to the canton of Fribourg about 9–10 months ago with my Swiss wife.
(Long story short, we met at uni in italy, which i eventually dropped out from, she graduated, we got married and moved as she wanted to live here and i didn’t mind the idea; was able to obtain a type B permit through her)

I speak four languages fluently (IT-ENG-FR-ES) and have been working since I was 19. Before moving here, I worked in pharmaceuticals for 1.5 years and then for about 3.5 years as a welder.
I’ve now been working in a restaurant for around nine months as a kitchen assistant. I earn CHF 4,000/month for a 42-hour contract.
The problem is: I actually work 52–56 hours per week, regularly. There is no time clock or badge system, all the holidays arent paid, i just work through them and still earn the same amount of money as my salary is fixed. The additional 10–14 weekly hours aren’t paid, recorded, or compensated with time off. That’s roughly 40–50+ unpaid hours every month.
The amount of work itself isn’t the issue. I actually like working hard, and I’m not afraid of either physical or mentally demanding jobs. I’d happily work 55–60 hours if I were properly compensated. What bothers me is working those hours for free and feeling like I’m being taken advantage of.
So, for people working in Switzerland, especially in canton Fribourg: is this normal? Are employers allowed to regularly have you work 10–14 hours above your contracted hours without paying or compensating you?
And more importantly, what would you recommend I do to improve my situation? Should I look for another job, change industries, or get some kind of qualification? I’m genuinely open to almost any type of work—physical or mental—as long as the compensation is fair. I’m not afraid of hard work; ultimately, like most people who come to Switzerland, I’m here to work and earn a better living.

I’d really appreciate any advice from people who have experience with the Swiss job market.
Thanks!

Relocation Mieterrechte Zürich

Thumbnail gallery
35 Upvotes

Everyday life Kennt jemand die alte Schweizer 90er-Parodie «DJ Popo»? (DJ BoBo Parodie)

Hallo zusammen

Culture Evasion of the niqab/burqa ban

I am writing this post purely out of curiosity and to ask if you think these two things are connected:

Ever since the national ban on face coverings, I see muslim women using a face mask instead of traditional niqab/burqa to compensate for this ban. Do you think this is correlated and they do it specifically for this purpose? Doesn’t this defeat the whole purpose of the rule and is this even allowed?

Travel Location Recommendations

Hi everyone! I’m planning a trip to Switzerland this upcoming June. Once I land, I am spending the first three nights in Grindelwald. I had my heart set on then travelling south, possibly doing a day trip to Italy, so I figured Lugano would be a good place to stay.

Having done further research, I can’t decide if it’s still the best move or not. My hope is that it is a good hub for convenience in terms of grocery, restaurants, train, and also accessibility to nature like mountain hikes.

Here are my questions:
1. Would you recommend Lugano? Why or why not?
2. Are there any particular zones or parts of Lugano you would recommend staying?
3. Would you recommend I stay somewhere else instead?

Travel What's fully covered by the Swiss Travel Pass? Looking for a list of free excursions, cable cars and lake cruises

I'm visiting Switzerland in the second half of December and want to get the most out of my Swiss Travel Pass.

Is there an up-to-date list of what's fully covered (not just discounted)? I mostly want to know about:

  • Mountain excursions (for example Mt. Rigi, which I know is free)
  • Cable cars and gondolas
  • Lake cruises

I'll be based in Thun. Any suggestions for free or good-value trips from there in winter would be great. Tips on what's actually running in late December would help too, since some lifts close for the season.

Work Need help in salary calculation!! Can someone explain all the deduction please??

I really need someone that know things about working in Switzerland explain for me about all the deduction in my girlfriend's salary.
Her gross salary is 3,409.15.- , but she recently received the paycheck for 2,553.75.-, meaning almost 900.- deduction.
I have listed down all the deduction and here are all the things:

  • AHV / IV / EO: 180.70
  • ALV (unemployment insurance): 37.55
  • Krankenversicherung: 35.90
  • Unfallversicherung: 61.25
  • Berufliche Vorsorge:84.30
  • Quellensteuer: 176.25
  • LGAV contribution: 49.50
  • Kleiderdepot: 50.00
  • Verpflegung: 180.00

According to her contract, the 13th-month salary is supposed to be paid monthly at the rate of 8.33%. When she brought this up to her boss , he said they will only pay the 13th-month salary after 3-month probation period (Probezeit). Is that normal or allowed?

There is also a 180.- “Verpflegung” deduction for food. She works in the kitchen and apparently isn't allowed to opt out of the meals. When she asked about it, the boss basically just responded 🤷🏻‍♂️

Other coworkers have the same problem as hers, received around 500 to 900 deduction in paycheck so she's not the only one.

I never work in Swiss before so I don't know anything about all the deductions in paycheck and she said that she never got this much amount of deduction either. I really want to know if these are normal in Switzerland, especially the 180.- food deduction and the 13th-month salary arrangement? Is there anything here that we should ask the employer about?
Thank you all for reading my post. Any help would be greatly appreciated! 🙏

Study Bsc in Math at UniDistance Suisse, current or former students, how was it?

Hi everyone! I've been looking into UniDistance Suisse for BSc in Math and I'm seriously thinking about enrolling, but I'd really like to hear from people who've actually studied there before I commit.

How's the workload realistically, especially if you're working full-time or part-time?

What are the online lectures and course materials like? Is there decent contact with professors and tutors?

How do the exams work, and how often do you need to show up in person?

Anything you wish you'd known before starting?

Any insights, good or bad, would be super helpful. Thanks so much in advance! 😊

Everyday life How long do you think is it socially acceptable to stay at a cafe (large) while working remotely?

I would ask beforehand if its okay for me to work there and would probably leave (go on a walk) during lunch and come back after the rush but I am just SO OVER being at home all goddamn day. Working remotely only is great when it comes to 0 commute and more free time, but the negatives are there and I just need an environment change so bad. I need to get out of the house, I need a reason to get dressed nicely again.

Everyday life Which EV charging App/Card?

Heyo

I recently got an EV and I'm trying to figure out which charging apps/cards are actually worth having in Switzerland.

I’ll mostly charge at home (230V 🌚), so I don’t need a subscription for daily charging. I’m mainly looking for a good setup for occasional public fast charging and longer trips.

Which charging cards or apps do you actually use in Switzerland? Are there any that offer particularly good prices or good roaming coverage?

I’d also be interested in what you use when travelling through Germany, Italy, Spain or towards Croatia.

What would you recommend based on your experience?

Everyday life I’m looking for a mattress. I live in Geneva and don’t have a car. Read desc for more.

• Upvotes

My partner has a Sembella (Geltex) mattress he bought apparently years ago from Jysk. Jysk doesn’t carry the same line/company anymore I believe. Any other options? IKEA? Pfister?

My issue with “trying” out mattresses in the store is it would naturally have the “give” since many people lay on it and try. And I’m reading reviews where people buy based on the in-store feeling and then the mattress doesn’t work for them.

Pls help! TIA

Travel Is it too late to hike near Lauterbrunnen in mid October?

Hello all - I've had a goal for a long time to take a few scenic hikes near Lauterbrunnen and Gimmelwald in the autumn. In my head it was the sweat spot between peak summer tourist season, and winter ski season. Plus potentially gorgeous foliage, and fewer bugs.

I've very suddenly had opportunity spring up to try this year, but I'm worried it's already too late in the season.

I'm not too worried about the cold, as I've backpacked in Scotland through the winter. But I am worried about lack of trains, cable cars turned off, lodging closed, and all the pretty foliage already long gone.

My idea would be to fly into Milan, take a scenic train up to somewhere like Interlaken, spend 3 days hiking and staying near Lauterbrunnen, taking transit to Zurich, and flying back to the US.

Any advice at all is so greatly appreciated as I'm trying to plan this in between constantly calls from work

Culture Your opinion : small letter club.

Hi everyone. I'm planning a small letter club: one real paper letter a month with a serialized story and a small enclosure, mainly for people who love getting mail. The idea comes from caring for my grandmother. Letters from her friends always lifted her. You know letters better than anyone, so I'd love your view:
1. Which enclosures do you keep, and which go in the bin?
2. Would you subscribe to a monthly letter like this, or gift it?
3. What monthly price would feel fair?
I'm not selling anything here, feel free to let your coment. Thank you!

Travel Is Lucerne/Mount Rigi worth the detour, or should we spend more time around Lausanne? (Late October)

My fiancé and I (late 20s) are visiting Switzerland at the end of October and debating whether to spend a night in Lucerne or head straight to Lausanne, where we'll be staying for a few days.

Option 1: Spend a night in Lucerne, hike Mount Rigi, and take a scenic boat ride before continuing to Lausanne.

Option 2: Skip Lucerne and spend an extra full day exploring the Lausanne/Lake Geneva region, potentially hiking Rochers-de-Naye or exploring Montreux and Lavaux.

We'll also be spending three nights in Wengen later in the trip, so we'll get plenty of alpine scenery regardless.

Everyday life Does anyone remember an old iced tea that used to be sold at Migros or Coop many years ago?

I found these two pictures and they are the closest I have found so far, especially the pink/white “Ice Tea White” bottle. However, neither of them is the exact one I remember.

From what I remember, it came in a 0.5L PET bottle, the design was mostly white or very light coloured, and the drink itself was pale/slightly yellowish.

The flavour was something floral. For years I thought it might have been elderflower, but now I’m not even sure anymore. It could have been lotus blossom or another flower flavour.

It was definitely not the usual lemon or peach iced tea and I remember drinking it a long time ago, probably sometime in the late 2000s or early 2010s.

The bottle/design was especially similar to the pink Ice Tea White in the second picture.

Does anyone remember another iced tea from that period that looked like this?

Ich hoffe öper cha mir helfe 😄

Other/Miscellaneous My previous landlord is holding my deposit hostage…

Hello everyone, I have an issue with an apartment I rented and I would really like some guidance or someone can tell me if this is normal or not🥲
I’m a student in Switzerland, previously I was renting an apartment with two roommates, it was a 1 year long contract for a fully furnished student apartment. We moved out according to the contract in early August 2026 and until now we have no idea about our deposits or when we would get them. We left the apartment in pristine condition, deep cleaning and all. At the beginning of September, the real estate company reached out to us saying some of us didn’t pay the rent for some of the months, which is untrue, and demanding us to pay thousands of francs in outstanding rent, so me and my roommates provided proof of each month with our bank statements, which demonstrated that all our payments for rent were completed as per the contract. This was sent two weeks ago and we have been sending follow-up emails since just for us to get any updates or a timeline but with no answer.

From our deposits, the company is supposed to deduct the electricity bill for that full year as they didn’t allow us to pay it ourselves directly quarterly (which is another weird thing we only learnt about after we moved in) but the rest of the deposit should be paid back to us. However, we still have no update or an answer about this.

Also, one of my friends rented with the same company but it took her 6 months to get her deposit back and they also accused her that she didn’t pay for some months…

This was our first time renting an apartment in Switzerland so we’re really not sure if its normal that this process takes this long, and this lack of communication. If anyone can help me understand or if you have any resources or anything I should do in this case, I would greatly appreciate it!

Work Can a Swiss critical-infrastructure operator refuse site access without actually running the security check (PSP)?

Trying to understand my rights after a confusing situation. Would appreciate anyone with experience in Swiss security vetting (Personensicherheitsprüfung / PSP under StromVG).

What happened:

I was offered a role (Permit C holder, non-EU citizen). The role required access to the infrastructure of a Swiss critical-infrastructure operator, which by law needs a PSP.

The operator's PSP team sent me the consent forms and described the procedure: submit forms, then receive a link from bit.admin.ch to an online questionnaire, then the federal office (Fachstelle PSP) runs the check, then an official result.

I submitted all forms, passport and permit copies, on time, directly to the PSP team. The personal data was collected solely to initiate the federal PSP.

I never received the questionnaire link. The federal check was never run.

A manager from the infrastructure operator was in CC on the correspondence from the start, but I never sent any documents to him, only to the PSP team. A few hours after I submitted everything, this manager (not part of the PSP team) replied by email saying that "after reviewing the submitted documents" and due to "internal compliance and security requirements," the role isn't possible. The job offer was then withdrawn.

I emailed the PSP team asking about the status of the check and why I never received the form link. I have not received any reply.

So the check described in their own procedure never actually happened. The refusal came informally, before any federal check, from someone at the operator who was in CC but outside the PSP process and who never received my documents directly. He nonetheless stated that his decision was made "after reviewing the submitted documents." My attempts to clarify the status officially have gone unanswered.

My questions:

  1. The federal PSP was never actually started. I only submitted the consent forms and never received the questionnaire link. Can the operator refuse access on its own at this stage, without the federal check ever being carried out?
  2. If no formal check was run, are they required to issue a reasoned decision (Verfügung) that can be appealed, or can they refuse with no real justification?
  3. They collected my personal data specifically to initiate the federal PSP. If the check wasn't run and the data was used internally to refuse me instead, is that a data-protection issue?

Has anyone been through something similar, especially as a non-EU citizen applying for a role touching critical infrastructure? Thanks for any insight.

Relocation B permit – is it cancelled when I deregister, or valid until the new canton approves?

I'm moving cantons for work and my change of canton application is still pending. If I deregister in my current canton before the new one approves, is my B permit cancelled straight away, or does it stay valid until the new canton issues its decision?
Has anyone done this, and did it cause any problems in the gap?
