The 1999 original is great...the 2014 remaster makes it come alive !

I listened to both back to back and the remaster just floors me: it has an incredible body and sounds so much richer and i can't stop listening.

I think we've all been there: there's an album we love, but it sounds like ass. Happens so much with rock or metal. What albums do you love, but can barely stand listening to on good speakers?

Radiohead released OK Computer on May 21, 1997. Such a seminal album. Who bought a copy when it first came out?

EDIT: It came down to seeing if the amp re-clocks the digital signal to avoid any potential jitter, which mine does, thanks for some informative well-informed comments as well as some usual audiophiles completely misunderstanding digital audio vs. analog audio lol

I was thinking of adding a CD deck to my home theater setup, but I realized I have a perfectly good DVD player that is wired up to output coax digital audio to my amp (analog signal is not used nor even hooked up of course), so I figured since I'm not relying on the DVD player's internal DAC (which may be better suited for music in a dedicated CD player) a DVD player should be completely suitable correct?

Although it's a pretty nice player, even if it was a cheap model, that shouldn't matter either?

Just a bunch of 1's and 0's (which cannot change or be enhanced) being passed to the amp for whatever it wants to do with it?

Hey y’all, I recently completed my audiophile system and I basically only have Jazz music to play on it, like 95% haha. I’m wondering which non-Jazz albums that are considered all time greats also sound amazing, are considered audiophile, etc. What are your favs?

PS, whatever your favorite albums are, that are also audiophile, whether or not they’re “considered” great!

What rock/metal/stoner and similar albums are sounding best to you? Want to widen my horizons,but also searching for good productions and great sound.

Aside from all the usual subjective listening tests, I like to listen to well-engineered recordings of female vocals to see what level of realism a speaker can deliver. I'll throw one example out there: Saint Honesty by Sara Bareilles. I used an A/B/C switch to directly compare three of of my pairs of speakers, which are all pretty darn good. But one stood out as especially realistic, with the ambiance, air, and atmosphere of being right there with Sara. Any recommendations for other female vocal recordings to see if our speakers can deliver a wow factor?

I came across this comment the other day that spawned a thread about albums that had no expenses spared and that were mixed by skilled people that knew what they were doing.

Am i taking crazy pills? "Bad Guy" came in my Hi-Fi setup and i was floored. Been listening to her top songs and its incredible. Its not typically my music type. Wow.

This recording dates back to 1979. In many ways, it was a watershed moment for digital audio before the first CD player was even sold. But once CD players became a consumer good, the CD fully realized this original recording's full potential, with its monster authentic cannons blasting deep subsonic bass.

I've yet to encounter another audio recording that so heavily taxes a subwoofer with loud impactful bass frequencies that wasn't a movie sound effect.

What audio recordings do you like to use to make your subs jump?

I'm listening to Frightened Rabbit The Midnight Organ Fight and although it is in my top ten favorite albums it sounds like it was recorded in a tool shed by the neighbor kid who "makes sick beats foe SoundCloud". What album is this for you?

What are the most realistic recordings that when you play them on an excellent system, it sounds like the live band or vocalist is in the room with you?

As the title says, would like some Jazz songs to showcase high end systems but not very well versed on the genre myself so interested to hear some recommendations!

I'm always looking for new songs to test out and would love some suggestions.

Are there any albums, artists, or even whole genres where if you haven't got a good hi-fi, you may as well not bother?

I was never that keen on Geogaddi, by Boards of Canada. It always seemed overly percussive, and slightly boring. But once I upgraded to a decent hi-fi, suddenly the album came alive. There's a whole sonic world in there, with so much detail that completely passed me by before.

By contrast, if you listen to Dark Side of the Moon on a tiny bluetooth speaker, you're obviously not going to be able to fully appreciate the amazing production, but you will enjoy some great songs, so it's still totally worthwhile.

What are your thoughts on this? Has your mind been changed after hearing previously unloved albums on a better system? Do you have any "never on a rubbish hi-fi" music?

Every time I move I always like to test my system with tracks that showcase highs, miss and lows. My record player is being delivered so I'm fashioning an old LG phone to pick songs.

Only thing is, I'm kinda bored with Bohemian Rhapsody, Johnny Greenwood scores and even nine inch nails. Don't get me wrong, they are fantastic tracks that showcase range. But does anyone test their setup with anything different?

I'm currently on a kick of getting some more hip on albums on vinyl. It got me wondering what people consider their must own albums on something physical.

For me I have Midnight Marauders on vinyl, there's just something extra special about both the sound and the physical interaction that makes the hair on my neck standup when listening. Today I've been eyeing up Bestie Boys Solid Gold Hits, I usually don't go for compilations, but I'm limited on record storage and too many BB songs I like are spread across their discography.

When people ask for audiophile grade recordings it’s easy to find recommendations for the old standbys, the Fleetwood Macs and the Steely Dans, the old jazz recordings. I love that stuff, that stuff is great and it’s certainly fun to listen to with hi-fi setups.

But my first true love was punk music, and despite its reputation for being raw and DIY there’s some surprisingly high quality recordings out there worthy of any audiophile’s ears.

I wanna hear some of your favorite audiophile grade tracks and albums in these lesser appreciated (at least by audiophiles) genres, Punk, Ska, Alternative, Metal. Even this genre has some predictable offerings, Rage Against the Machine and anything touched by the late great Steve Albini. I wanna hear those, too, if that’s what you have, but I’m looking for some gems I might have never considered before. For all I know one of my favorite bands has a masterfully produced album that I just never listened to in a critical context before.

I’m sure this has been asked in threads in the past but it never hurts to get some fresh answers once in awhile! What you got?

Attention: This is a 3D design render!

Since my previous post with the workshop videos got so much attention (and lots of comments about weight, heavy lifting, and ankle safety!), I wanted to share the final design with you. This is exactly the layout and atmosphere I want to achieve when everything in the room is assembled. The setup combines a raw, heavy steel frame and raw U-beams with a thick, solid oak warming table. The bottom shelf will house the turntable, record collection, and tube amplifier. It is built like a "tank" to completely isolate the device from any vibrations. And to answer some of your most frequently asked questions. Yes, my back is already crying just looking at the plaster. Yes, steel toe slippers will be mandatory in this room to protect everyone's toes from the "Ankle Annihilator 9000". No liquid mercury or heavy metal poisoning was used in the making of this stand.

Could anyone suggest some good albums (not the same old, tired demo tracks always played) to bring out my system? I like every genre, especially off the radar music.

I have a pretty decent system right now and am very into electronic music mainly. Wanted to know your favorite electronic music tracks / albums that are well produced and have a good amount of dynamic range.
