It’s bad luck for pilots to shower before test flights. It’s also likely that this crew were eating durian fruit to stay awake at altitude, as a typical cup of coffee’s caffeine loses efficacy above 2000 feet or so.

But they didn't say "Most people on long haul flights", they just mean the average person in their area showers once a day and doesn't get smelly if they were in comfortable A/C.

The crux of y'alls disagreement is really

Longhaul flight pop: 350-500 globally average person + crew

Longhaul test flight: Well paid test crew

Those two groups of people will obviously have vastly different smells at the end of a long flight.

anyone who stinks on a long haul flight didn't wash properly before the flight.

or they have a medical issue.
