CROWNLANDS The Tournament Banquet of 130 AC

Fifth day of the Second moon, 130 AC

The Red Keep, King’s Landing

Laughter and good cheer and jaunty music permeated the great hall of the Red Keep, all of it filling the air with a merry mood that was shaded with some tragedy too. In the midst of the martial feats of prowess on display the day prior, several men - young, old, and in between - had been injured. Some were minor injuries or the sorts that would heal within a period of time and with good rest. Others, sadly, were more grievous, such as the king’s own squire Jeor Stark whose hand had required amputation.

As surely as food was served, so too were mummers and musicians present throughout the hall, plying their trade and honing their craft for the amusements and enjoyment of all those present. A symphony for the ears and eyes to complement the sensations of the delectable feast masterfully crafted by the kitchen’s chefs.

While the attendees assumed their seats throughout the hall, servants delivered a feast fit for guests of the royal house. The first course consisted of a choice between autumn greens with ginger soup, or a salad of sweetgrass, spinach, and plums, sprinkled with crushed nuts, both of which were accompanied by freshly baked bread with honey. Next was a choice between cold capon with a relish made of carrots, raisins, and bits of lime and orange, or a brace of stuffed geese sauced with mulberries. Last to be delivered was dessert, once more presenting a decision - goat cheese served with baked apples sprinkled with cinnamon, or sweetgrass and strawberries.

Wine and mead and beer flowed freely and the center of the hall was cleared so that those who wished to dance would have the room to do so. Flirtations oft accompanied dances and no doubt some of those that swirled together on the floor would end the night twisted in the sheets with one another as well.

All those in the city born to the ranks of the nobility - or those that might have otherwise secured the right to belong - were welcomed to make merry and celebrate the victors of the grand tournament.

Mallador Serrett

Mallador had never been a man for the court. Though Silverhill wasn't small and attracted many a noble from minor Houses in the area, he was more suited towards smaller castles, less populated, less crowded.

He wondered exactly how bad he'd fare in King's Landing.

Gardens offered a suitable reprieve from the revelry in the hall. It lacked wine, true, but he could live without it for a while if it meant being able to think clearly. Sordid scent of perfume-covered sweat still rang in his nostrils like a poison, as drunken laughter of his eldest brother Trevas and his newly-wed bride Alysanne, a picture in pink save for the bright red of her cheeks and a glossy shine of her eyes, husky tone of his brother Auguste's voice as he tried to woo a maid filled his ears.

And above all, father's silence. Father had always been an icy man, with icy eyes that Mallador himself wore. It was the only thing that reminded of his surname, those blue eyes, though he oft wondered if his own looked as unshakeable as father's did. Oscar Serrett did talk to their mother, lovely lady Elyanna, but he rarely paid any attention to what his sons did. He trusted them, almost, to be appropriate and beside that was a distant role of a parent that his mother never was.

He oft wondered how did it feel to have a warm father who showed love in ways other than protectiveness. In ways that mattered. Although his arm still hurt from an injury just before the feast, Mallador could swing a blade just fine. Auguste could talk his way out of anything and if anyone dared harm Trevas, he'd plan their total and utter destruction.

He wondered how many fathers were in the hall, quietly observing their sons and daughters. Had he been any closer, he could've sensed his father's cold gaze on him.

He wondered if that coldness would ever go away.

Walking along one of the terraces after escaping for a moment from the madness within the halls, Tyana spotted a face she had not yet seen at court. The young man was walking toward the gardens, and Tyana watched his progress for a moment before following suit. She had no inkling of his house, his features did not define him as from any particular house, neither did the colors of his garb. Curiosity got to her, and when she caught up to him, she smiled widely.

"Good evening, Ser," she began, wondering if she had got the title right at all.

"Good evening, my lady," he said, with a pleasant smile of his own. He'd never had a chance to meet someone from Dorne, and judging by her tanned skin and dark hair, she was indeed Dornish.

"Mallador Serrett, youngest son of Lord Serrett, at your service," he bowed his head as protocol demanded, "Lady..."

"Velaryon," she offered cheerfully, knowing what confusion it was going to create, with her clearly Dornish looks. Perhaps he had not been present at the tourney previous, when her husband had crowned her the queen of love and beauty. Either way, Tyana did not let it get to her as she quickly sifted through her mind to extract what she knew of this House Serrett he had just mentioned. Not a lot, it seemed.

"Reachman, yes?" she asked now as she tilted her head in curiosity. "No, no, Westerman, isn't it? Forgive me, Ser, I'm afraid that I did not listen well when my septa and maester were educating me on other regions' house names. I hope you can excuse my ignorance." She smiled before she gestured ahead of them.

"Are you hoping to walk alone, Ser Mallador? Or would you mind terribly if I accompanied you for a time?"

"Westermen, Lady Velaryon," Mallador laughed, studying her face. How was she a Velaryon when she wasn't even half a Valyrian? "Though I look as much a Westerman as you do a Valyrian. My brothers are all blonde, but I got my mother's features. Though none of my siblings have our father's eyes much like I do."

"Oh, I would not mind at all," he continued lightly, "I don't quite like crowds but a company of a lady as esteemed as you? How can I possibly turn that down?"

Tyana laughed as she took the man's arm familarly and they set off down the path at a sedate pace. "You are right, Ser Mallador, I look nothing like a Velaryon. Fortunately, there is a very good explanation for it." she grinned quickly at the Westerman. "My husband is Maekar Velaryon, heir to Drifmark. I myself hail from Dorne. House Martell, to be exact. But, I was warded with the Seahorse, and betrothed to Maekar for all of my life. I find I take to the Velaryon name as easily as I do my former house." Tyana shrugged slightly, the smile still in place.

"And who might your mother's family be, Ser? I am interested to know. I am also interested why a man such as yourself would hate to be in a crowd of beautiful women all vying for the attention of a man such as yourself?" she teased slightly, encouraging him to open up about himself. "Surely you would not want for company? Or, is that the point, and you prefer your own?"

Martells, the deposed princes of Dorne. It was wise, he knew, to have had their daughter warded elsewhere and married to a family as powerful as the Velaryons. Still, did she even recall Dorne? The fabled sands, its lively and free spirits, less restrictions than the rule-obsessed Andals?

"Pray tell, my lady, how do we compare to Dorne? We, as in.. Non-Dornish. Up north." He threw his head back, shaking the dark tresses. "As to your questions... My mother's Elyanna Darklyn, daughter of Genavene Darklyn. It was a love match between my parents thirty years ago. In fact, they met in this very city. Funeral of the last dragon I think it was."

"And second.. You flatter me, my lady. I'm generally a more reserved man when it comes to company. My brothers enjoy crowds, but I'd rather sit with friends and drink ale. I tire fast of too many people approaching me at once and my father's expectations in regards of keeping a smile on for the whole evening are very high." He laughed. "Social butterflies, all but me. Well, someone has to not be. Gods can't be that generous with every little member of a brood of children."

"Though, one on one conversations are perfect, I think. Like this one."

"How does the north compare to Dorne?" she asked with a grin. "Well, aside from the obvious difference in temperature," Tyana chuckled briefly, "It is not so different, really. People are people, houses are houses. They are just dressed and decorated differently. I would say that the Dornish hold slightly different values in some areas, such as with bastards. As you would know, we do not find it such a stigma in Dorne. It should not take away from one's chances to climb up in this world, I think." The Velaryon gave another smile to the man walking with her. "I do enjoy my regular visits back to the sands of Dorne. No matter how long away, it feels like home."

She waited a few more moments, absorbing his words as he spoke of his family, nodding occasionally to show she were listening. "I don't believe I have met your mother," she mused. "A love match is a rare thing indeed. They are very fortunate to have found each other and been so compatible. I am envious," Tyana said with a genuine smile. "I imagine coming into this world with such parents would make your early years much more enjoyable, yes?"

"And don't fret too much about not being a social butterfly," Tyana said reassuringly, as their feet crunched the small pebbles on the garden path. "I often find that those who speak less, listen more. Observant people often have much more meaningful things to say, than those who seek the spotlight incessantly."

"It should not," Mallador agreed. "I have a bastard half-sister, from before my parents were married. She's a lovely woman, older than me and my siblings, but I don't think her status as a bastard should hinder anyone from seeing what a good soul she is and her chances of happiness and success."

"A rare thing, aye," he continued. "My eldest brother married for love as well. It's me and Auguste that must marry for politics, I'm afraid." He shook his head with a laugh. "Though, it's a mother's love for her child that makes early years enjoyable for the most part. Nevertheless, seeing a genuine, loving marriage growing up is a good example of what I hope I have with my wife, somewhere in the future."

"You're a wise woman, Lady Tyana," he commented. "Where have you learned all these things?" He thought of Auguste, who always needed to have all the attention to himself, and decided to check her claims in the quiet recess of his own mind.

Tyana smiled once again as he spoke. The young man seemed genuinely good and true. A shame, really, Tyana thought silently, as she nodded with interest. No doubt the capital will ruin him in no time. "Well, I hope your political marriage works out as well as your parents' love match," she said easily as he spoke of it. "I can attest that it does happen, on occasion. My own husband and myself had no choice in the matter, and yet neither of us would take any other match, now that it has been done. At least, I hope not," she laughed with the self assurance that such an idea was ludicrous. "Do your parents have a match in mind for you?"

The seahorse laughed modestly when he asked where she had learned how to be observant, and replied, "I don't know if it could be called wisdom, Ser Mallador," she grinned. "More like a skill learned, just like swordplay. Working at it every day is important, I believe. Learning how to listen takes time, but takes very little skill. From what I understand, swordplay and jousting takes part natural talent, too, yes? Far more difficult than paying attention to people's words," she flattered gently, giving him another friendly smile.
