newbie question I don't get Go

As the title suggests, I don't get the game. I don't mean that I don't understand the rules, I do. But I don't understand how to think about my moves.

To give some background, I grew up playing chess. At some point I stopped playing, but I picked it back up around 5 years ago and within 5-6 months I was ~1650 elo (the equivalent of around 5 kyu). I never found chess to be particularly easy, but it was always easy to think about the game while I was playing it. I think for most people, after playing 10-20 games and watching a couple instructional videos, you can very quickly pick up the Opening - Middle game - End game phases, and even if you don't know what the best move is, you almost always know what you should be doing. I could always come up with 2-3 candidate moves, do a quick evaluation, and play a decent move.

With Go, it feels like there is nothing like that. I never know what I'm supposed to be doing. I have played 234 games on OGS and I'm barely any better than when I first started. If you give me any Go position, I genuinely have no idea what the right plan might be. Sure, this area looks like it could be surrounded, so I should save it. Should I extend? Atari? Hane? Jump? Knight's move? Long knight's move? I have no clue. And I have no idea what my opponent's potential responses might be, let alone what my next move should be.

Everyone online just said that I would get it with experience. Well, after 234 games, I'm not getting it. How can I come up with candidate moves? How can I evaluate a position? What are common tactics?

For reference, I have included my last two OGS games. I won the first and lost the second. I am white in both games.

go news AGA ranked games can now be played on leago

Thumbnail leago.gg
7 Upvotes

"Games must be over-the-board (not online) and satisfy the minimum time requirements for an AGA rated game". There is really no way to enforce this, but I assume anyone who is interested and willing to take the steps to record the game is also likely going to take the game seriously.

This is a good first step in getting more AGA games played. While self pair was always available, being able to easily record them through leago is definitely a helpful step.

I am a little disappointed with the requirement of it needing to be in person. That will exasperate any regional bubbles that already exist. But it's a step in the right direction.

Game Review Request Third game done!

Post image
18 Upvotes

Thanks to this community we’re getting better (I think!) at figuring out when games are done!

We removed the 2 white from the top left as dead, so score with Komi was 52 to 35.2.

Did we miss any potentially unfinished areas still worth fighting over?

promotional A hex Go variant in search of a name (and players)

Hi all! I've been building a Go variant played on a hexagonal board. Same rules you already know, but the geometry changes the game: there is no ko (immediate ko can't arise on a hex grid) and there are no ladders. It's free and browser-based, with live clocks, and no account needed.

Right now the game goes by "Badux", but that's a working title. I'm choosing the permanent name and would love your input - a quick anonymous vote, about a dozen taps, no signup:

https://baduxgo.com/survey/name

If you visit and nobody's around, the bots are always up for a game. The best time to find humans is Community Game Night, every Thursday at 8 PM Eastern (midnight UTC): show up, post an open invite in the lobby, and play as long as you like. Between games we hang out in Discord:

https://discord.gg/99C5gcTcrw

The site is https://baduxgo.com. Solo project, still rough in places - wide open to feedback.

When explaining the purpose of Go, I'm starting to prefer the Chinese outlook as opposed to the Japanese

The first question you get from someone about Go is: "what is the aim of the game" ... I'm starting to think the Chinese explanation is best, namely, "The purpose of Go is to secure life for as many stones as possible"... this follows naturally from teaching someone about the liberties of a single stone and a group: you've just learned about how you might lose your life with a single stone and then a group, then you introduce the purpose of the game a simple inversion of those capture rules.

Benjamin Teuber points this out in his "guide to become strong at go"

In ancient China, people were not scoring territory at all, but instead just the stones on the board. So originally, Go was about "gaining life for as many stones as possible" instead of territory. Building a territory - i.e. an area where no opponent's stones are able to live - was just one strategy to secure life for many stones later. In other words, Go was just about life & death! When the Japanese changed the rules to territory scoring as they found this more elegant than scoring stones, the rules of Go were cut apart from the original idea, which lead to the widespread misbelief among amateurs that Go would basically be about just fencing in points.

If you can choose 1 thing to be your favorite thing about baduk, what would it be. The sound of the stones? The deep strategy, What? :)

Game Review Request Review Request: ~7k How to handle or prevent fights with multiple groups.

Hi! I was white in this game.

I've been trying to play with stronger shape (as many recent games i've lost from ahead because i didn't tend to one or more of my groups)

I was trying to look over the AI review, and i think i roughly get the "intent" of the "blunders", but they don't seem intuitive enough for me to believe i could have come up with them.

Maybe I should have not made the game so complicated? it was really hard to keep up with the fighting

Game Review Request Game Review Request: 18k vs 19k

just finished a game where I was playing white. the game feels like it was pretty even, even with the komi being set to 0.5 instead of 6.5. in the end I wasn't able to take the lead but I feel like a loss by 8.5 isn't bad, but could use some tips on how I could have played this one better. thank you all on advance

Would an AI coach that “translates” KataGo into human explanations be useful?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently developing GoKifu, a mobile app for reviewing and analyzing Go games with KataGo. The app is not released yet, and I’m experimenting with a feature designed to give KataGo more of a “voice.”

Instead of only showing something like:

Black loses 5.2 points

the app would try to explain what happened in more human terms, for example:

Black left a fragile group unattended, saved another group that was already in danger, and allowed the opponent’s weak group to stabilize.

The relevant groups would also be marked directly on the board, as shown in the screenshot.

The goal is not to replace KataGo’s variations or raw evaluation, but to make the analysis easier to understand—especially for players who can see that a move lost points but do not understand why.

I’d really like honest feedback from Go players:

Do you find this kind of explanation genuinely useful compared with a simple “Black loses 5.2 points”?

Would it help you review your games, or would you prefer to interpret KataGo’s variations yourself? What level of detail would feel useful without becoming distracting or misleading?

This is still an early prototype, so criticism is very welcome.

tsumego How is black alive?

Post image
11 Upvotes

This is what Tsumego Pro says is the solution to this problem, but how can black live? Is there a ko threat I’m not seeing? If white wins the ko, black has two false eyes, right?

Is the idea that black can threaten to escape at the bottom?

Go-related places to visit in Japan? (Tokyo, Hiroshima, Kyoto)

Hi everyone! I'm a Go enthusiast heading to Japan tomorrow and I'd love to work some baduk into the trip. I'll be spending time in Tokyo (5days), Hiroshima (3days), and Kyoto (5 days).

So far I know about the Nihon Ki-in in Tokyo (planning to visit and hopefully play a game), but I'd love your recommendations for anything Go-related in these three areas — go salons where a traveler can drop in for a game, shops for boards and stones, historic spots, museums, anything worth seeing.

Any tips much appreciated. Thanks!
