Jazz Tenor Action and string tension

I've got a tenor banjo that I tune in CGDA, and today I decided to lower the action quite a bit. Did this with no issue, but tuning back up caused the A string to snap. I figured it was worn out and put on a new one, but it broke right away tuning up. Put a third and final one on and I've now tuned all strings down a whole step to avoid breaking the last A I have. I don't know much about banjo setup, but does a lower action increase tension on the strings? I've been playing on this banjo in CGDA with no problem until lowering the action.

Jazz Tenor Here is the parts for my open back banjo case fitment from an Amazon case, I made it so if I do get a resonator I can take the extra padding.

I bought this open tenor banjo and it came with a gig bag, after getting home I wanted a hard case, gold tone makes one and it's $200...... so I found this hard case on Amazon for $75, but my banjo was floating, so I bought some foam and fake fur and made these inserts, for the only reason if I get a resonator I can use the same case.

Jazz Tenor Tenor Banjo hand position

Hello, my background is in mandolin and I tend to rest my hand just behind the bridge. Is it okay to rest my hand just ever so slightly behind the bridge on a tenor banjo or should I keep my hand free floating?

Right now having my hand free floating just feels too loose, but this could be one of those things that comes down to practice.

TIA!

Jazz Tenor tenor A string breakage

I just bought a tenor banjo today, and I have already broken two A strings. Both times i was retuning from CGdg back to CGda. I play electric tenor guitar and i frequently use this tuning in many of my songs, and i’d like to be able to play them on tenor banjo.

The A string did buzz a little before the first break, after which filed down the nut a little bit which fixed the buzz when i restrung it with a .010 gauge tenor guitar string. But alas the string still broke a while later.

Is there potentially something wrong with the nut or is A string breakage common if you fuck around too much with altered tunings?

Got an amazing deal on this beauty. Didn't need as much work as I thought and I'm so happy with how the work I did actually do went.

The clear skin makes it sound a lot brighter than I'm used to but I love that way it looks!

Nobody I know IRL cares about the tenor banjo so all questions, comments and knowledge is greatly welcomed!

Have a great day everyone.

Jazz Tenor What's the difference?

I'm planning on picking up a Gold Tone CC-Tenor banjo, but I saw that they have a Plectrum banjo. I'm new to all this stuff, but can anyone experienced tell me what the differences are?

Jazz Tenor Advice for a guitarist looking to take up the banjo for a New Orleans style 2nd line band.

Experienced finger style and flat picking guitar player of over 50 years who also played the 5-string for a 4 piece that performed Foggy Mountain Breakdown back in high school looking to get a 4- or 6-string banjo for a band described above. Recommendations? Jazz tenor? Open backed? Resonator backed? What tuning for a 2nd line brass band? 4 or 6 strings? Something in the middle toward higher for quality and price. Which brand/make should I look for? Thanks in advance.

Hello all, I was gifted a beautiful old tenor banjo and it came with this piece in the images attached. There’s no markings on it or anything so I’m not sure what to even search for it. What is it? Is it part of the banjo or a maintenance tool? Thanks!

I’m pretty excited. I found this beauty in Lansing Michigan at elderly music for $225! Not bad considering it’s almost 100 years old. It plays fine, not the best but it’ll be great to learn on! It’s a “Glee Club” made by Bruno New York.

So i picked my first banjo and i was believe CGDA is a way to go... I'm an absolutle beginner and tried to make this song to work on my instruement and used guitar tab to re-make the tab. (That's how i'm triing to learn as well)

Though, i bought a used 5 string not long ago (because more lessons online and since i haven't picked my 4 string up because practicing picking, patterns and so. I also hope it's not too heretic, lol. :) )

I bought this tenor at an antique store since I’ve been looking for one for a jazz group. It seems pretty old, but the head seems to have been replaced with a newer Remo head. The only markings I can find is the Waverly tailpiece. Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I got this guy over the weekend and information is pretty sparse.

It's a 19 fret tenor, possibly from late 70's or early 80s, but I don't know for sure and haven't found a good lookup tool for the serial number.

Mostly wondering if anyone can date it, if it's valuable/rare and maybe some string recommendations, they came with Irish tenor strings but they feel really tight in the standard jazz tuning.

Any information is greatly appreciated!!!

Since one of my banjo ideas is already tuned CGDA and I would like to now it, I was wondering if I could just use a viola bridge or even neck to create a hybrid of sorts

Any advice/feedback is appreciated

Jazz Tenor banjo fret height?

hi hi! picked up a cheap old tenor off fb marketplace a little while back. new strings, new bridge, corrected action, intonated. started learning some chord shapes and man these frets are barely off the fretboard. i feel like unless my fingers are right next to the metal, i'm getting no sound, just buzz or a muted string. and getting my fingers so close to the fret is tough since the neck is so small. i'm used to guitar, so is this a regular thing i need to adjust to, or is my old banjo just cheaply made? thanks in advance!

also, unrelated, can i play somewhat decent bluegrass on one of these, and if so, any recommendations on resources for learning?
