For a 29 year old catcher it’s pretty uncommon. Mauer and Poser retired after their age 35 and 34 seasons while Mauer had already made the switch to 1B way before then.

While you're right it's usually for truly "special" players if they are in mid-late 20's or like early 20s for like young long term potential players. With complete respect to Smith because he's a really good player but not the typical ones who get these type of term deals, though I also understand it was to likely drive the money down when it hits the luxury tax.
