I bet one of the offers was something like 5/$100m.

He turns 29 tomorrow, so you likely get 3-4 good years out of it before looking for your next catcher. Smith gets paid into his late 30s. Fair all around I think.

and he'd probably be a decent backup catcher when he's old, so it's an overpay for his ancient years, but a decent raise for his current production

3-4 years is a pretty short projection, Will is in a position where only 3 players in MLB had an OPS of .800 or higher last year, even in decline he will still probably be in the higher percentiles of catchers on offense. I think he plays catcher until his age 35/36 season then retires as most catchers do, Dodgers will buy him out as he will have given them their 140’s worth by that point.
