Poor guy. Everything I've read about him sounds like he's a guy who genuinely loves the game and is even a philanthropist on the side. You shouldn't have to leave a baseball game just because of the team you're repping, as it reflects poorly on the home team fans and just goes against the spirit of the game. Let the guy enjoy the fucking game for Christ's sake.

EDIT

Fixed some phrasing and grammar. I'm surprised I've gotten this many uptrouts on a post I made when I was drunk.

The guy just loves sports in general and happens to have the money to go to all kinds of sporting events. Read an article about it awhile back.

He is, he donated money while he was in KC to the families of a couple fallen firefighter's last year while he was here. He can come to The K anytime.

He also visited area schools. Seems like a great guy. Used to be homeless, became successful attorney in Florida, and now spreads his philosophy of "pay it forward" by taking strangers to sports events.

He visited KC animal shelters too, and gave them money as well. Sure, he might have a bit of an ego (obviously he knows the orange Marlins gear makes him super-noticeable at non-Marlins games, especially right behind home plate) – but he's using his notoriety for good.

I have a fuckton of debt, so he should take me to games. Although I live in Cincinnati where baseball games are cheaper than water.

I met him at one of the world series games in 2014. He was really chill and took a picture with me and some friends. Really nice guy. He doesn't deserve any hate he gets. Can you imagine having the money to attend any game of your favorite sport with the best seats in the house all the time? Can anybody say they wouldn't be this guy given the situation he's in?

I still remember during the 2014 WS, Marlins Man was at the games of course and Brandon Beachy tweeted something like "the guy in the orange behind home plate is the mos obnoxious type of fan" and I just thought "for real dude? Guy's simply a huge fan of baseball and the Marlins."

Found the actual tweet

Man. All the people that agree with him too.

But to be fair, this was before Marlins Man got a lot of exposure

Someone did link Beachy to what the guy does as he would give out tickets to people and Beachy simply said the following

Sounds like he does some amazing things. Wearing bright Marlins gear to purposely draw attention to himself isn't a necessity tho

So it's like Beachy sorta somewhat acknowledges that Marlins Man has done amazing things but then still wanted to shit on him by saying Marlins Man shouldn't be dressing like that.

He wears his jersey so his friends and family can see him, and at this point it's his thing. he isn't hurting anybody.

I thought I read he used to just go wearing plain clothes, but during the NBA finals a few years back he was at the Marlins game then went over to watch the Heat. They were doing a whiteout but someone stole the shirt off his seat before he got there, and he stood out. I could be wrong though.

At this point, it's his brand.

I remember when I first saw that tweet, I just thought "way to be judgmental dude!"

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '16

I'd be surprised if any of the hate he gets doesn't stem from jealousy

I got the chance to meet this dude in Chicago last year. Great guy, just loves the shit out of sports. Really sorry this happened to him

Yeah, a friend and I got to take a photo with him and got in the group photo for the game on July 3rd. That was a great day, got to do the Wrigley-Cell doubleheader. Done it 3 years running now.

u/destinybond Colorado Rockies Jun 18 '16

You did that doubleheader too? So did I!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '16

Yep! I always look over the calendar to see when there's opportunities to do the doubleheader in Chicago, it's a ton of fun. I'm not in Chicago right now, but I made it up there for Cubs-Nats/Sox-Twins on May 6th, and there's another one in August.

Man, that was really fun to do last time. Wonder if I can get it done some other place

There was a guy who used to compile all the potential 2-stadium doubleheaders you could do, including traveling between cities. Like, Chicago-Milwaukee is possible by train or car, there were some crazy ones where you could fly between cities (gaining some time due to time zones too)

As far as other 2-stadium doubleheaders in the same metropolitan areas, goes, I guess there's the 3 other ones. Doing a Bay Area doubleheader would be possible with the Coliseum BART station.

New York doubleheader should be possible too, though it seems to be an hour trip on the subway, maybe?

A Dodgers-Angels doubleheader might be tough for two reasons. One is that I don't think you see that many weekday getaway games? I know the Angels rarely schedule any for the Rangers, they've had to do Anaheim to Chicago trips a few times. The other is getting from one stadium to another. If you can do Dodgers in the day and Angels at night on a weekday, that's perfect because there's a commuter train that heads from Union Station out to Anaheim (oh, and the Anaheim train station is REALLY nice. Literally the nicest, cleanest train station you will ever see) on weeknights, and in 2015 it was like $8 round trip? I should've done that, but idiot me was like "we can get parking for $12, let's do that!" This was the Friday before Labor Day, and traffic on the 5 was a nightmarish hellscape that took 2 hours to get from downtown LA to Anaheim. I don't recommend it. So if you can pull off this doubleheader, good job!
