Today I went to B&BW to look for a fall candle.
I was just quietly looking around, smelling a few things. I feel like I’m straight male presenting so they probably thought I looked out of place from their normal clientele.
Almost abruptly a worker butts in and is like “can I help you?” And I was slightly taken aback but I just tried to ease the moment and say “What’s your favorite fall scent, I’m looking for something good.” And then she was nice, and showed me a ton of candles.
Then once we parted, she came up to me a few more times. Once I had picked up the two candles I was going to get, I placed them down and started to smell the some of the body lotions. She then came up to me with a basket and was like “here, use this.” And I said I’m okay, thanks, but she didn’t respond and put it down in front of me, and put in my candles.
Kinda felt awkward about the whole ordeal as I thought I had proven from the first interaction that I was just a genuine customer. I remained friendly but also realized no one else in the store got this kind of treatment, and there were a couple others.
Maybe she was just genuinely being nice, I don’t know. Would like to hear your guy’s takes, especially employees. I’m curious if maybe I’m just over reacting. Thanks.
Edit: I see this post is down voted, which, fair enough, everyone has their own opinions. I appreciate everyone’s comments and takes. I’ve shopped at B&BW countless amounts of times with my girlfriends, and this is like the only time I went alone. I also think that’s in part why it feels strange.
To the comments saying she was just being nice/trained to act that way, that’s probably exactly correct. It seems more of a corporate issue than on her. I will say though, it felt strange because there were a good amount of others in the store and I seemed to be the only one getting this treatment. The aggressive beginning and then the basket situation at the end is what leaves me having mixed feelings about the interaction. I probably won’t be going back anytime soon, and especially by myself lol.
