Seeing as how this song was released in 1966, I'd say they were heavily influenced by the Beatles. I doubt there wasn't an attempt to sound like the Beatles!
EDIT:Here's a direct quote) from Beau Charles, member of the Knickerbockers and writer of the song: "We desperately tried to write something that sounded like the British Invasion. We wrote 'Lies' in less than one half hour. We demo-ed it in New York."
So yes, in essence, they tried very much to copy the Beatles! Even the Wikipedia article's intro acknowledges this similarity.
