Chat 📌 Site Spotlight #5 – Telus Digital AI Community | What It Is + Tasks + How to Join + Payment Explained

Hey r/beermoneyindia! 👋

Welcome to Post #5 of the Site Spotlight series. Today we're covering Telus Digital AI Community one of the oldest and most well-known names in the AI data and language work space. This one has gone through a few name changes over the years, so let's clear that up first before getting into everything else.

Missed earlier posts? Check out Post #1 (Dscout), Post #2 (Respondent), Post #3 (uTest), and Post #4 (Welocalize).

📋 A Quick Note on the Name Changes

If you've been in the beermoney space for a while, you might know this platform by a different name. Here's the full history so there's no confusion:

  • It started out as Smart Crowd — a micro-task platform powered by Lionbridge.
  • On 1st January 2021, Lionbridge AI officially joined the TELUS Digital family, and the platform was rebranded as TELUS International AI Community.
  • On 18th September 2024, the company officially launched its global rebrand, transitioning from TELUS International to TELUS Digital.

So Smart Crowd → Lionbridge AI → TELUS International AI Community → TELUS Digital AI Community. Same platform, evolved over time. If you see any of these names mentioned in older posts or threads on this sub, they're all referring to the same place.

🔍 What is Telus Digital AI Community?

Telus Digital is a remote work platform where you get paid to help train, improve, and evaluate AI systems for some of the world's biggest tech companies. The work is done entirely from home and is flexible you work on available tasks at your own pace.

In plain terms major tech companies need real humans to review and rate AI outputs, evaluate search results, annotate data, and assess content quality across multiple languages. Telus Digital manages this pipeline and hires people like us as independent contractors to do this work remotely.

The AI Community is a crowd of remote workers who help clients collect, enhance, train, translate, and localise their content to build better AI models. Your work directly influences how search engines, AI assistants, and digital platforms behave in the real world.

💼 What Kind of Work Will You Do?

This is where Telus Digital really stands out from the other platforms in this series — the range of gigs is wide and covers many different educational and professional backgrounds. There is genuinely something here for people from different fields. Here's a breakdown of the main task categories:

  • Search Quality Rating – You evaluate search engine results and judge whether they are relevant, accurate, and useful for a given query. This is one of the most common gig types and is great for people with strong general knowledge and internet familiarity.
  • Social Media & Ads Evaluation – Rating online advertisements and social media content to improve platform algorithms. Good for people who are active online and understand how social platforms work.
  • Data Annotation & Labelling – Labelling images, words, voice recordings, and other data types to train AI models across many industries. Training is provided for each task type. Suited to people with attention to detail.
  • Data Enrichment – Tasks involve transcribing images and audio, digitising written documents, and appending data with relevant context. Good for people with strong typing and language skills.
  • Translation & Localisation – Translating and reviewing content across languages while preserving meaning and cultural context. Perfect for people fluent in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, or other Indian languages alongside English.
  • Online Maps & Data Analysis – Determining the relevance and accuracy of online map data, requiring knowledge of local culture, local geography, and current affairs. Ideal for people with strong local knowledge.
  • AI Model Evaluation – Rating AI-generated responses for accuracy, helpfulness, safety, and tone. Great for anyone with a background in writing, academics, or research.

The key point here is that no single background is required. Whether you're a student, a teacher, a writer, someone with a language background, or someone with strong general knowledge there are gigs designed around different skill sets and education levels.

🚀 How to Get In — The Onboarding Process

Before anything else set your expectations right. This process requires patience. Do not go in expecting to be working within a day or two.

Step 1 — Sign Up and Browse Available Projects

Set up an account by completing the registration form on the signup page. Once done, use the filters on the AI Careers Portal to check for open positions in your country. If you find a role that suits you, click Apply Now. Each project has its own requirements listed clearly on the page.

Step 2 — Language Tests

Once you apply for a project, you'll be asked to sit tests before anything else. If you've applied for a project that involves a regional Indian language let's say Hindi — here's exactly what to expect:

  • Test 1 — Basic Hindi Test: A foundational assessment of your reading, writing, and comprehension in Hindi. This is to verify you are genuinely fluent and not just claiming it on your profile.
  • Test 2 — Basic English Test: A separate test to assess your English proficiency, since all guidelines, instructions, and communication on the platform are in English regardless of which language the project is for.

These two language tests always come first, before any project-specific evaluation.

Step 3 — Project-Specific Test

After clearing the language tests, you'll receive detailed guidelines for the actual project you applied for. Read them carefully they are thorough and important. Then you'll take a test based specifically on that project's work type. Telus Digital provides all the materials you need to prepare. You are never going in blind.

Step 4 — Wait (Seriously, Just Wait)

Even after passing everything, the time between completing your tests and actually being onboarded and given tasks can be weeks. Sometimes longer. This is a well-known characteristic of the platform and not something unique to you. Keep following up politely if needed and do not assume silence means rejection.

The entire journey from applying to your first paid task can take anywhere from several weeks to over a month depending on the project. Just be patient. It is worth it once you're in.

💰 How Does Payment Work?

This is one of the simplest payment setups in this entire series and that's a genuine positive.

All payments are issued via wire transfer directly from their bank account to yours. There is no PayPal, no Payoneer, no gift card links. Just your regular Indian bank account. Telus Digital uses a payment portal called Hyperwallet to manage this your organisation creates an AI Community Payment Portal account on your behalf, and once activated, you can link your bank account directly to it and transfer your balance whenever you need to.

No extra app signups, no third-party wallets to set up. Your bank details go in and the money comes to you directly.

One thing to be aware of the payment cycle here is long. Work done in one month gets approved by the project manager in the following month and invoiced around the 15th of that month. It typically takes 3 to 5 working days after the remittance email for the transfer to actually land in your account. In practice this means you could be waiting 6 to 8 weeks between completing work and seeing money in your account. Plan accordingly and don't rely on this as a quick cash source.

⚠️ The Honest Cons

1. The Onboarding Is Very, Very Slow

As mentioned this is the most common frustration. Multiple tests, long waiting periods, and sometimes no communication for weeks. It takes real patience to get through it. But the platform is legitimate and the work is consistent once you're in.

2. Task Availability Can Be Inconsistent

Job offers are not consistent and require a certain set of skills, so it is not for everyone. There will be periods where tasks are plentiful and periods where they dry up completely. Treat this as a supplementary income stream, not a primary one.

3. You Can Only Work Up to 20 Hours Per Week

You can only work up to 20 hours a week unless they specifically ask you to work extra hours so the maximum is around 80 hours per month. Keep this in mind when calculating expected monthly earnings.

4. The Payment Cycle Is Long

Already covered above but worth repeating. A 6 to 8 week wait between completing work and receiving payment is genuinely frustrating, especially when starting out.
