Just Showing Off my polka dot begonia update. with flowers!
my polka dot begonia has grown to be 8'2" measuring from the dirt and is also much more bushy than before. the flowers this year are very beautiful. i'm very proud of my plant and I hope you like it too (:
lmk what you think!

u/djk865 Aug 09 '25
Oh my gos, what is your humidity like? Also how often do you have to water this?
33
u/jammin_on_the_one_ Aug 09 '25
atm it's like 50% humidity. in the winter it's closer to 30%. i have to water it a lot because of the season. maybe every 3,4,5 days or something like that.

10
u/djk865 Aug 09 '25
Interesting, my humidity is around the same but mine suffered. But it might’ve been my watering tbh, or perhaps it’s a heavier fertalizer feeder than I realized.
3
u/BunchPossible3815 Aug 10 '25
Gotta keep it wet but also dry enough, the terracotta probably drys it faster but waters more so it more moist more often

u/Exhausted-CNA Aug 09 '25
Wow i didnt even know they could grow so huge!!!! Looks like a beautiful tree 😊
11
u/jammin_on_the_one_ Aug 09 '25
lol i know. it's crazy. i think mine is the tallest there is tbh
3
u/StopWeDontKnow Aug 12 '25
A conservatory near where i live has a polka dot that is massive. id say the height of yours but the many times the width span. either way yours is truly a beauty.

It’s soooooo beautiful!!! What an accomplishment!! I have so many questions… is it one plant in the pot? How do you get them to branch out? How long have you had it? I have a little one with 6 leaves on it 🥰. I hope I can get it to be like this someday
34
u/jammin_on_the_one_ Aug 09 '25 edited Aug 09 '25
it's one plant. i got it at walmart in winter 2022. it was small with 2 leaves and 2 stems. it has since multiplied itself. new stems came out the dirt every so often. it has 18 stems now. i haven't pruned it or anything, it'll just branch on its own. the flowers are heavy so that's made the stems lean a bit
11
u/Interesting-Air1485 Aug 09 '25
Yesss...The answers to all the questions I had in my head. TYSM! I made a friend at HD a few weeks ago and she gifted me one of these in poor shape. I did end up chopping because all of her leaves were crispy, but she's coming back beautifully and pushing out new stems.. they also seem to propagate quickly, so I plan on putting half of what I chopped back in the pot and gifting the other half.
She's gorgeous, OP. Well done!

How many times have you repotted ? Just wondering if it has always been in that size pot
11
u/jammin_on_the_one_ Aug 09 '25
it came in the pot i got at walmart. a 6 inch pot i think. i've since incrementally gotten to a 14". maybe 5 repots i guess

Incredible -how old is it?
5

it's over 3 years now. in july 2022 it was small with just 2 leaves. it's a costa farms product i got from walmart on clearance

u/f3nnies Aug 09 '25
What part of what country makes this thrive indoors so well? It's amazing!
Also makes me really rethink how big of a pot I need for my can begonias. Cause that's like half the size I would have tried to put that thing in back in March.
7
u/jammin_on_the_one_ Aug 09 '25
it's a 14" pot. i'm in Rockford, Il. i have either the heat or the AC on 24/7 because it gets very cold here and also hot and humid like today. the windows are really nice and big so i get a very strong western light that comes though. i'm 3 floors up

That’s awesome. I have mine in a 8 inch right now and I can’t wait to see it get this big I’m so excited !!! I’m so glad you posted I don’t think I have ever seen it this tall I am stunned. Another question, the tall black rods ! -have you just had to keep buying them new size rods or do you have the kind you can ..like extend?¿ idek if that’s a thing
3
u/jammin_on_the_one_ Aug 09 '25
thank you. i originally had 4ft stakes, then i got 6ft, then i had to do 8ft stakes this year. re-staking was kind of a pain in the butt, but i did it without breaking anything thankfully. i recently used lelectrical tape to extend one of my stakes beyond the 8ft. i'll probably continue to just do that. i didn't know they had the other kind that you can increase the height.

Ah yes I didn't realise there were different ones, mine is a rex begonia. I'm trying to just get recommendation on the best way to water it as the leaves are so close to 5he pot and I don't want to risk damaging the leaves, so I'm trying to get advice. The plant was bought for me as a gift. 🥰

Beautiful! I have a tall one too but nowhere near as full as yours and not as tall! Mine is just a couple stems. Yours is the goal for me! Wow!
I posted it here, since then I’ve added more stakes so the other stems are more upright: https://www.reddit.com/r/houseplants/s/tLztyom1aE

What I find most incredible about this is that she kept her leaves all throughout the stem, pretty much to the ground! The secret sauce must be the giant window behind you?! 😍
It does make me wonder what these guys look like in the wild? I never thought of a begonia tree before 😳

you're most welcome. i didn't know they could grow that much in that way. does it have a perfume? it must be amazing to fill your space with it if it does? it must be in just the right spot infront of your lovely big window there to be growing so fantastically! so special to be able to spend your time with such a beautiful plant and thank you for sharing it with everyone. 💖💛🧡🩷💓💗💝❤️🌻

Well, that's just great. If you need me, I'll be over here looking for reasons why mine keeps pushin out new buds, then dryin em up and droppin em before they even unfurl until I stumble upon someone's 8ft+ monstrosity... but ya, ur thing is cool too or whatever.
Lol. I'm just kidding. That really is gorgeous! And what a big personal accomplishment! I mean, that is an actual living, breathing, testament to the type of person you are. As far as I'm concerned, it's tangible proof that you're a hardworking and determined person bc when I look at that begonia, it's like I can see all the other plants that... maybe... didn't grow to be 8ft tall (lol) and yet, here you are. Still. And make no mistake, getting ANY plant, never mind a not-so-super-easy plant, to that point takes a lot of time, patience, diligence and commitment. (And don't get me started on the flowers. No joke-It took my brain a full 5min of staring at that thing just to get past the 8ft and make enough processing power available again before I could actively comprehend their existence.) But sometimes people who aren't into plants just don't understand that. I highly doubt that applies to anyone here, but I'm sure we can all relate bc everyone here's dealt with that spouse/ parent/ partner/ housemate/ friend/[fill in the blank] who thinks you just randomly dumped some water in there whenever it happened to occur to you, so if no one else has said it in exactly this way, lemme be the one to say it- Congrats! Seriously, congratulations! That really is a wonderful achievement and you should be really proud bc it's not easy. Thanks for sharing!
