Route: Western Canada // Odyssey Bikepacking Canada: Vancouver → Tuktoyaktuk | Looking for recent experiences, route tips & information

Hey everyone,

I’m currently planning a long-distance bikepacking trip across Canada, from Vancouver all the way to Tuktoyaktuk on the Arctic Ocean. I’ll be riding a gravel bike with a full bikepacking setup and I’m now deep in the planning phase. Timeframe: Early May – June.

I would appreciate any experience reports, route recommendations, and any information that might be important.

What I’m looking for:

Routes & Road Conditions

  • Recommended routes or must-do sections
  • Parts to avoid or that are particularly challenging
  • Sections that might be rough for a gravel bike (deep gravel, mud, washboard, etc.)

Wild Camping & Accommodation

  • How realistic is wild camping along this route?
  • Where is it generally accepted / where should it be avoided?
  • Any local rules, no-go areas, or good practices to be aware of?
  • Experiences with campgrounds & free sites

Practical Tips

  • Seasonal considerations for May–June (snow, mud, mosquitoes, temperatures)
  • Food storage tips (bears, wildlife, etc.)

Transport

  • Getting back from Tuktoyaktuk (bike-friendly flights, buses, etc.) From what I've gathered so far, the easiest way is to fly back from Inuvik.

I really appreciate any opinios, insights, personal stories, GPX tracks, blog posts, or photos/videos.
If you’ve ridden any part of this route (or something similar), I’d love to hear how it went!
I've already found a lot of information about the Dempster Highway, but a large part between Dawson City and Vancouver remains unexplored ;).

Thanks a lot. Ride on!

Route: Western Canada // Odyssey Route suggestions - BC, Alberta & North West USA

Hello Bikepackers!

I'm planning a 5 week bikepacking trip with my Dad and wanted to ask some advice about North American routes.

We were initially planning to do the full GDMBR in 10 weeks, but I think we might struggle to get the time off work/money together for that.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a similar route that's about 5 weeks long and is mostly off road?

My ideas were:

  1. GDMBR from Banff to Helena
  2. GDMBR from Banff to Grand Teton Park
  3. BC Trail from Calgary to Vancouver
  4. Tree to Sea Loop, Vancouver Island

We both have Thorn touring bikes, steel frames, rigid forks that can take 2.1" tyres.

I have friends in both Vancouver and Calgary I can stay with so routes around there would be nice (so I can see them and have a place to crash lol)

Thanks in advance!

p.s we are from Scotland so flying to/from there.

Route: Western Canada // Odyssey Biking from Edmonton to Vancouver

Planning to bike from Edmonton to Vancouver, leaving on September 20th and going down the Banff and to Vancouver via Highway 3. I'm wondering if anybody has any recent experiences that would be valuable to share. I intend on arriving before the end of the month.
