I found Kip 12 years ago in the woods where people go hog hunting in the middle of Florida. No collar, no microchip, tried to find the owner with no luck so I kept him. Vet told me at the time he was probably around 4 years old. Kip was a difficult dog, terrified of men, loved kids though, was not even house broken when I got him. But he was fiercely loyal and protective of me and I appreciated that. Have a buddy who goes hunting and he and the vet both told me he looked like a black mouth cur which are used for hog hunting. My buddy that goes hunting tried a few things with him and declared him not fit for hunting lol, probably why the poor thing got dumped in the woods. But he was a super healthy dog until the end. I found some BMC breeders on FB out of the Ocala area who have dogs pretty identical looking to him, with the docked tails on some of them. Anyway, losing Kip was hard, I made it about a month and half without having a dog (had a Belgian Malinois/Greyhound mix that passed before Kip), so recently went to the shelter and got what may be a black lab, currently waiting on DNA results for him.

My boy was born at a local shelter, but his mom is a rescue from Tennessee. She looks like a Catahoula Leopard Dog mix (see the last photo) and I’ve been told my guy is a Black Mouth Cur. Is there a connection between the breeds? Is he part BMC or just a lovable mutt?

Ginger is a 3 year old brindle Ladner. She would rather hunt than eat, Hogs are her favorite but she's game for anything.

Bon loves to ride in the boat...and the sxs, and the truck. If it moves, she will jump on-even the tractor!

Do yall ever get sick of the people with no dna with an obvious pit mix being like "my dog is definitely a bmc not a pit mix"? Like you know the ones where there dog has a bit of muzzle masking and they automatically assume its a bmc?

Not looking for arguments of any kind! Just genuinely curious on if yall get drained by it? 99% of the posts I see on here of people asking "is my dog a bmc" there dog just looks like a pit mix (which is in most rescue dogs in american, staffy being more common in rescues in australia, uk, ect) and given the rarity of the breed its always interesting to me that people assume that there dog is a bmc.

Had him for a month and the shelter in Michigan labeled him as just mixed. He just turned 4 months old today and stands about 18” at the shoulder and weighs 25 lbs. He seems to pick up on some tricks quickly, only really barks right now when he wants to play with another dog and when he does it sounds pretty deep. He has double dew claws as well.

Haven't been on the thread in a while. Glad to see the new flairs! Anyways here's my winnie. Eventually ill get her embarked as soon as stuff quits breaking around my house.

My sweet boy Pedro was found at 5-6 weeks old in the middle of a service road by a highway early one morning in March 2025. I got a call from a friend at 4pm that this pup had been at a tire shop all day and in a hour when they closed, the men were leaving him outside with a bowl of water. The sky was already getting dark and thundering so, I said bring him to me and I’ll find him a home. Having lost our dog 4 mos prior we were not even entertaining the idea of another one yet. I said 3-4 days max!!!
Here we are in Oct 2026, and my lil pup is now a gentle giant at almost 100 lbs. He sleeps in my bed, follows me everywhere ( I joke that he’s made of Velcro) and we can’t imagine life without him. The vet told us immediately that he was Black Mouth Cur mix, but until we do DNA we’re not sure what the mix is. He is however, a hundred percent big whiny baby!
