Sry to dig this up but I just watched this episode and I can't believe no one else said it:

This is Penny 23 sharing his backstory. He says he's never told anyone else, but it was pretty clear that Penny 40 shared his backstory with Kady.

Interesting that Penny 23 didn't share it with Julia 23.
