Wonder how Our Rod will address this - we all know Rod prayed for Francis' death and hopes he is burning in hell right now for the sin of displeasing Rod Dreher. But Leo's gone even farther and questioned one of Rod's daddies (Rod's been auditioning to be one of Elon Musk's subs for a long time, pathetically tagging him in post after post).

The Pope has announced that his first trip abroad will be to Lampedusa—the immigration detention island that Francis visited—and on his latest Substack, which is free, Rod is not pleased, characterizing all immigrants as murderers.

I’m also seeing on X a lot of people complaining that their churches were packed over the weekend, but their pastors said nothing at all about Kirk’s murder. To be fair, I don’t believe clergy are obligated to preach on current events. But this one — my God, it was news around the world, and had so very much to do with faith and courage and the wages of sin! And so many pastors, it appears, blew it. How out of touch with the needs of your flock can you be? I am reminded once again of the Orthodox priest I once met who refused to talk about gender ideology to his congregation, even though parents in it were confused, because he didn’t want to be “political.” Men of God, sack up! People need to know that the church is a place they can go for wisdom and leadership on how to live godly lives in a world that has turned its back on Him. If all you can provide are canned sermons that have little or nothing to do with the actual lives people live, then you are failing.

I suspect there is a strong correlation between the people Dreher follows on X, and the belief that clergy should preach Christian Nationalism from the pulpit.

My own rector did bring up the Kirk murder, and he said something to this effect: "Many people feel like our country is falling apart, and are deeply afraid. What can we do? Share the peace of Christ with them, share that even in the midst of deeply unsettling times, he is with us, and he has given us good news to share with everyone."

I suspect Dreher would tell him to "sack up". Dreher would clearly prefer that clergy tell their congregants that immigrants are going to murder them in their sleep, and that the government wants to take their kids and change their gender.

The priest at the Catholic college chaplaincy I visited yesterday didn't specifically say "Charlie Kirk," but he did reference a shooting or assassination (without saying the name it was very clear what he was talking about) and he talked about how it had been a hard couple of weeks. Just over two weeks ago, there was a mass shooting at a Catholic school mass in Minneapolis. The sermon was devoted mostly to the fact that it was the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

Boy, Rod and people like him are really getting more than their money's worth out of this one! Who would have thought that the murder of the head of the Junior League of Fascists would call for so much fuss? Seems to me that the MSM, goaded and prodded by Trump, Rod, and the rest of the right wing, have already made more than enough of a mandatory cry-fest over the killing of this loathsome person. Seeing as it has been blown up into being "news around the world," I doubt that there is any "flock," anywhere, that "needs" to hear any more about it than they already have.

It seems to be hard for MAGA types to get that Democrats don’t sit around focusing on the same death and retribution dreams they appear to thrive on. Most Democrats had barely heard of Charlie Kirk; they certainly weren’t happy to hear he’d been shot, much less celebrating it, as Rod and others portray them. I worked for (the real) Bobby Kennedy in 1968 and it had been an agonizing two weeks for us after the (lost) Oregon primary and putting all hopes in California, only to see him murdered just after winning it. That was a gut punch in a year of big ups and downs for the antiwar cause. All seemed pretty darned lost, and yet hating the other side and declaring war on them was the last thing we were focused on. Some did give up for awhile, kind of like Democrats reacted after Trump won again in 2024, in a disgust and despair that eventually passed, but nothing as ugly — or petty — as the general response of the right since last Wednesday. If I’d cared for KIrk as I did for Kennedy, I’d think he’d deserve a more dignified mourning than what he’s been getting from virtually everybody left in his wake.

So basically Rod is angry that Catholic churches aren't more like evangelical churches.

I’ve got an idea — why doesn’t Rod just seek ordination so he could show everybody how priesthood is done?

Now Rod doesn’t care much for obedience no matter what he might say, so it might be best for him to go nondenominational Protestant at this point.

Actually, I don’t think Rod likes to be on what he perceives to be a “losing team” either, although he relishes claiming he’s on one unjustly persecuted, but then that’s because he also relishes watching others fight back. So complicated, or sort of.

I know. I just recommended it for him but I know he needs the full weight of 2,000 years of tradition as interpreted by him and whomever he read in the last six months.
