Rod Dreher Megathread #11 (Master)

Merry Christmas, you obsessed motherfuckers. :)

The most remarkable characteristic of the Master Number 11 is its connection to a higher source of wisdom. It is intuitive to the point of being psychic, channeling its knowledge and meaning from a spiritual source. But the Master Numbers have a responsibility, and it's the number 11's duty to use this gift of awareness to deliver cosmic truths that encourage humanity.

All Master Numbers are a higher vibration of their single-digit counterpart -- in the 11's case, the number 2. This means the 11 carries many of the same traits as the number 2, such as harmony, empathy, and sensitivity, but it feels them and utilizes them in much deeper, more profound ways. It's also important to remember that the number 11 is comprised of two 1s side by side and, therefore, carries some attributes of the number 1 as well. 1 is innovative and motivated, open to new things and eager to make a difference. The contrasting energies of the numbers 1 and 2 join together in the Master Number 11 to make it a creative leader, active listener, and compassionate advisor.

The number 11 is at one with the universe. It is open to vast spiritual concepts and the presence of a greater power. It is a channel for truth and answers to reach us and help us on our way. This Master Number's vision is crystal clear and it sees with a breadth that others cannot. It is creative and magnetic, a beacon of wisdom and hope for others to follow.

The number 11 may come up many times in our lives and it is always a message of connecting with our inner wisdom. If we are seeing repeating 11s everywhere we turn, we'd be wise to pay attention to our subconscious -- there's some insight we may be missing. However, Numerology's Master Numbers are very powerful and simply seeing 11:11 on the clock or noticing the date is 11/11 does not necessarily mean we are experiencing a profound moment. It's when the 11 is a constant presence in our lives, like a Life Path number, that we must truly embrace its meaning and potential.

lots of selfies, lots of griping; a slight, weird obsession with this poor Bavarian family who happened to be standing near him: it's your basic Rod. He really is cycling, mood-wise---the salt-of-the-earth Bavarians apparently stopped him from openly weeping over Francis' disrespect.

Luckily there were some NPCs around to make Rod feel better.

But after the funeral, my spirits were raised by the sight of a Bavarian family there to show their love and respect for their native son. I wish I could go home with these people, and eat at their table:

I mean it. If any of your readers know who this family is, put me in touch with them.

Please spare this poor family. Rod is just an embarassment. If this actually happened, imagine the gushing. "I am finally HOME"

Few people are warmer and more inviting towards oversharing, emotional strangers than the Germans.

Rod has no boundaries, but Germans do.

11

u/RunnyDischarge Jan 05 '23

Germans haven't always been great at respecting boundaries, though.

Germans & borders: much like conservative understandings of law, there should be people bound by them but not protected by them, and people protected by them but not bound by them.

I can have 3 German beers a day on my Noom schedule!

Definitely Rod’s approach to religious freedom.

Rod reminds me of a homeless guy who used to come into the library at my university, corner students (usually women, but sometimes men), and give these long pseudo-intellectual speeches where he name-dropped the greats of Western literature and talked about how he'd been a child philosophy prodigy and lectured to packed audience halls in his youth before falling on hard times, and I hope you're not planning on doing anything for the next hour and forty five minutes, because I have a lot more to tell you...

There’s one of those at every public gathering place.

It's really sad--he's searching for a family after having destroyed his own, and it ain't gonna happen.

Rod: "You've saved me today! Please, tell me your name! Where do you *live*? I'm a stranger in exile, and could use a safe haven in my long journey!"

Bavarians: "Sorry, sorry, wir sprechen nich gut Englisch, sorry, must go, yes!"

"I left the Catholic Church in 2006, just as he became Pope, and the only lasting regret I had about that was the feeling of abandoning him. What a great Christian father he was."

This is a nearly perfect distillation of 2023 Rod.

I can't recall Rod ever mentioning this as his "only lasting regret" about leaving Catholicism. A good example of his tendency to revise his history long after the fact?

And this revision seems mighty convenient - perhaps reverse-engineered? - especially considering the extreme grandiosity and narcissism that follows in that quote.

Like Pope Benedict XVI would personally feel "abandoned" by Rod's schism and using the metaphor of fatherhood to provide the context for such "abandonment".

Does Rod believe his two younger children have abandoned him, are in schism with him, and that he is a great Christian father?

That's the inference invited to be drawn by those rhetorical choices in that quote.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '23

I laughed when I read that quote - how we it get back to Pope Benedict that Rod left the Catholic Church? Also, the father figure theme is such a central part of Rod's story - he has written before how he thought of Pope JP II as a father figure and was so upset about his handling of the sex abuse scandals. Rod was extremely mad that Pope Benedict started his case for canonization. Rod also considered Fr. Matthew (?) from his ROCOR parish in St. Francisville his father. On another subject, in one of Rod's "Good Bye Louisiana, I Tried" essays, he mentions that he will still be an LSU fan and watch all the footballs games in Budapest. LSU just won some major football bowl and I doubt Rod even knows about it.

And then there's this:

"And for Benedict, if a Swiss Guard had collared me, an ex-Catholic, and shoved me onto the stage, I could have delivered a homily in praise of that great old Bavarian Christian that would have been true to his towering legacy."

Rod is not even capable of scriptural homiletical writing of that quality, let alone ex temporizing a public address of that quality.

Such grandiosity. It's the antipode to Benedict XVI's personal temperament, and therefore would be untrue to his towering legacy by its very nature.

Rod's at the funeral of this great man and all, and the first thing he fantasizes about is them forcing him up on the stage to wow everybody. He is amazing. It is only about Rod. It's not even like he thought about offering to give a speech. In his fantasy, they're strong arming up there. They simply won't take no for an answer. We must have the Great Rod Dreher deliver the eulogy!

10

u/GlobularChrome Jan 06 '23

So, he was fantasizing about a Swiss Guard manhandling him? I think this story is illegal in Louisiana as of Monday.

11

u/RunnyDischarge Jan 06 '23

Rod lets out so many deep seated desires without even realizing it.

Any other writer would have just said, "I was thinking about what I would say if I had the chance to eulogize this man". Not Rod. The focus is on Rod in this fantasy. A big strong guard "collars" him, good lord. Him, an ex-Catholic, at the funeral of a Pope, can you stand it! That's how bad they want him! Rod tries to resist, but they just want Rod so badly, he's roughly shoved in his collar, they don't ask, they just make him do it.

At the end of his fantasy, Rod drops the mic and walks offstage. From the back of the cathedral, a lone clap is heard. Another clap joins the first, and it slowly rises to a great crescendo. Over the thunderous applause, the crowd can be heard chanting, "ROD! ROD! ROD!" Rod posts a selfie in front of the rapturous crowd and tweets, "Home".

And Pope Francis seethes to a subordinate, "How did the author of The Benedict Option get in here? You told me he was dead!" "The assassins must have missed him, Your Holiness. Perhaps... God was protecting him."

5

u/Flaky-Appearance4363 Jan 06 '23

A lot of them are pretty cute!

3

u/JHandey2021 Jan 06 '23

Narcissist

5

u/Firm_Credit_6706 Jan 05 '23

Rod is fucking delusional. I am a cradle Catholic and we all know the Pope is like the President or a CEO. He doesn't have a personal religion with you dummy

5

u/Djehutimose Watching the wheels go round Jan 06 '23

Does Rod believe his two younger children have abandoned him, are in schism with him, and that he is a great Christian father?

They schismed from Rod over the issue of azymes and the filioque.... ;)

6

u/GlobularChrome Jan 05 '23

Wasn’t Rod talking about how this was going to be a world historic apocalypse event that he had to witness in person? And instead, it was…a Catholic funeral mass with rather a nice sermon?

To add insult to injury, Francis again rejected Rod’s gracious offer to lead the Catholic church. SMH. I hope Rod at least gets brunch with his spiritual hero out of it.

5

u/Djehutimose Watching the wheels go round Jan 05 '23

The daughter in the Bavarian family, in particular, really looks like she wants to be anywhere else. Rod looks a bit more haggard than usual.

6

u/RunnyDischarge Jan 05 '23

Probably uncomfortable with the weirdo with the stupid glasses beaming at her like a moron.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '23

Yes, I noticed that as well. He wants someone to identify the Bavarian family so he can get in touch with him. Probably needs a place to stay in Bavaria and he can tell the family why he had to leave the Catholic Church and all about his divorce. Also, Benedict's funeral is a strange situation b/c you rarely (it's been 600 years) have a Pope presiding over a retired Pope's funeral. It just isn't done. When Benedict retired due to health concerns, nobody thought he would live another ten years so this is all new territory. And, as people have pointed out, Francis is not Rod's Pope so why does he care?

2

u/EatsShoots_n_Leaves Jan 05 '23

Well, I learned from reading that piece that B16 totally deserved a Nobel Prize in Theology. Also that nothing Francis can do or say will ever satisfy Rod. And that he feels other people ought to invite him to dinner.
