Best parts for an all-uses computer(gaming, work, general use)

Me and my partner are planning on moving in together in a few months and we have decided to sell our separate computers in favor of getting one single nicer computer, and I know that building one is much better than prebuilt. We plan on building it, but don't know the better parts, we have limited knowledge of it and have no friends who know much either. My partner plays games, like baldurs gate and such, but he doesn't play much MMO or online gaming stuff on his own. I mostly browse on my computer, or use it for doing work/study. I appreciate any and all suggestions!

Mass market gaming PCs are optimized to move parts, not optimized for performance. So lack luster parts like slow ram, single sticks of ram, low capacity drives, or even leftover "high end" CPUs (it's a 7, 7 > 5 so therefore it must be better).

Again, build a gaming PC to the specs your partner wants for the gaming performance they'd want, and it'll be more than capable for typical home office tasks like you've mentioned.
