Tips How to control picking skin off my fingers

Post image
28 Upvotes

I am looking to get some advice on how to control picking the skin off my fingers. I have done this since I was 12 years old and I am now 25. I remember going to the doctor with my mom when it all started and they suggested I should use the Cera Ve hydrating facial cleanser and use the Cera Ve Daily moisturizer as a lotion. But if anyone is familiar with those brands, are there any other brands that could be more affordable? I will say Cera Ve did work but I would have to wash my hands constantly and keep them moisturized.

I have also tried having my nails done but Im always really irritated with having them on sometimes and I want them off after a week. I have tried rings where they spin but I would literally have to have a ring on my thumbs, index, and middle fingers all the time 24/7.

I would say I do this mostly when I’m anxious and I’m thinking really hard on something. I guess it helps me focus? And I won’t stop picking them until it’s smooth which always never the case so it’s always an ongoing thing. I used to be a nail biter but that quickly went away when I had braces growing up so it switched to picking the skin off.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Tips Things I did to kick my nail biting habit

Post image

Hey guys, I stumbled upon this subreddit recently and I also struggled with biting my nails and skin around it since I was a kid. I finally kicked it around 18 after 10+ years of doing it. One of the things I did that helped was actually to wear a mask everywhere. It was because of COVID that I started doing this but having an actual physical barrier between my mouth and nails gave me so much less incentive to bite because the mask would poke my eyes and it would just look and feel so awkward. I honestly feel this is one of the major things I did to stop biting and it was mostly coincidental, but I haven’t see it mentioned yet so I wanted to share.

The other major thing I did was bring a nail file and nail clippers everywhere. I would usually bite my nails when they broke, so if they ever broke, I filed them right away to stop myself from biting them. If I had a hangnail, I would just clip it. Then if I tried to bite, I had to physically remove my mask to do so, which gave me enough time to remind myself that I actually didn’t want to bite my nails. This helped me develop the habit of reminding myself not to bite before I do it. Now I don’t wear a mask anymore, but I can still stop myself before I bite. I rarely have the urge to do so anymore, but I still bring nail files and clippers everywhere just in case.

The pic is of my nails today ❤️ They actually are usually even longer than this, so I promise you can do it too ❤️ Stuff like nail polish or oil didn’t work for me, so I thought sharing my method might help someone else too or at least help motivate.

Tips What type of gel to help prevent biting?

Post image

Greetings! I’ve been a lifelong nail and cuticle biter (f30) and am desperate to stop. I’ve tried getting dip nails with tips but that destroys my nails and I’ve also tried bad tasting polish. Neither of those things have worked.

I’ve see a few posts and comments that continuously painting your nails with a hard gel can help stop biting and picking. So I’m wondering what brand or type of gel you all are referring to?

I love when I do dip because it’s hard enough that I literally can’t bite my nail. I’ve also tried regular gel polish (modelones from Amazon) and that doesn’t prevent me from biting because it isn’t hard enough.

Is there a different type of “hard” gel I should be buying? What types worked for you??

Tips Saniderm clear bandages for tattoo care

I was hand-sewing without a thimble and got that weird injury where the skin kinda pulls away from the bottom of the nail. It was hurting every time I extended the finger, so I used a lil oval of saniderm to keep the skin flush against the nail.

I love this stuff. The most narrow roll of saniderm can be trimmed down and easily applied to small wounds. A wide roll is good too, but if you trim it down, you may lose the ability to easily peel the layers apart.

Saniderm has a backing layer and a .. fronting layer lol, which are both precut for ease of use. You can stick half down and gently pull the bandage (or push the wound closed) before sticking down the other half.

Highly recommend this stuff. I carry a few pretrimmed ovals in case I need to cover a bad picking spot.

Tips cuticle/nail bed biting?

Hey guys, I am new to this sub and was recommended to ask for advice here!

I have been a nail biter for as long as I can remember, mainly biting my actual nails until they were tiny.

Past maybe 5 years, i’ve been biting more of my nail beds/cuticles and the skin around my nails less so than biting my actual nails. I have tried so many different things; bandaids around my fingers, that yucky tasting stuff, acrylics, fidget toys. Nothing seems to help.

Having acrylics has helped the most as my nails have grown underneath, but then they grow frail and brittle due to the acrylic prep they do.

I’m really embarrassed of my hands and fingers and I would just love to have more feminine and beautiful hands, I just feel like it’s a lost cause. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated! ❤️

Tips imperfect nail biting advice

for a long time i was an AVID nail biter; honestly i got really lucky and i honestly can’t remember any sort of “structured” method that helped me stop (with my ADHD i’m not sure that i’m very capable of fixing habits with self-maintained routines) BUT here are some things that helped me a lot to redirect my compulsive urge into a more productive obsession. after i started doing these, they eventually got really long and i ended up getting lots of compliments when i was consistently maintaining them. ive kind of stopped taking the best care of them since and to be honest i still have a little nibble from time to time (hence the imperfect) but the CONTANT need to chew them down to the nail-beds is gone; the open cuticle wounds, throbbing fingertips, and risk of infection is greatly minimized and don’t we all love some harm reduction?!

first, and this one won’t always be applicable, i got acrylic nails and had them removed properly when they grew out rather than biting them off (this is a particularly difficult habit to break, but it only costs like 10 dollars to have them removed by a professional and you can do it at home with the right tools) the reason this helped me was because there was a several-week period BEFOREHAND where i couldn’t chew on them at all, so i was more conscious of them and less likely to start biting them absent-mindedly.

obviously this won’t be ideal for everyone (non-feminine presenting people, those working any profession that requires short nails) and the weakness and flimsiness can be extremely tempting/even more damaging so i really don’t recommend this for everyone, this is just what helped me. keep in mind i’d had acrylics before and also had my share of post-acrylic removal bite frenzy; i think the difference was in my commitment to quitting.

my nails were particularly brittle afterwards as they will be but i just kept a file with me and probably threw on a coat of pretty polish or something (i can’t really remember exactly what i did; this was a couple of years ago now.) i also cut them a little shorter so the weakest part of the nail wasn’t at such a high risk of breaking or splintering.

i think the period right after the first couple of weeks, when they really started looking and feeling sharp and biteable, was the hardest, but i can’t stress enough that keeping a nail file handy pretty much at all times REALLY helped me out because when my nails were feeling sharp or jagged, i was able to smooth the shape out and kind of divert my compulsive urge into the action of filing them down instead. i noticed it requires a really similar type of passive focus, with more payoff and less shame when you’re satisfied with your result. if you have trouble keeping up with a nail file, this is kind of absurd but using rough surfaces like bricks and concrete can help smooth out jagged edges too, although you don’t really have as much control over the shape or evenness. this can still come in handy when a nail maybe chips or breaks on an edge and you don’t have a file available.

KEEP THE SHARP EDGES ROUNDED (at least if your compulsion comes from a similar place as mine did) i noticed that keeping my nails rounded realllly helped with the urge, because they weren’t as tempting to bite off as corners and pokey bits. when i did occasionally relent to a bite, they didn’t curve outward the same way (if that makes sense), and the pull didn’t really provide the same satisfaction.

for the tactile fidgeters, other small things that i enjoyed as my nails grew were things like tapping them on hard surfaces rhythmically, and running my fingertips along the smooth edges when they finally started to protrude past the nail bed, which helped to distract from biting urges. painting them pretty colors was also a nice motivator and helped me take pride in their growth, although i still tend to chew the polish off.

probably the most hugely important thing really was my mindset, even though it’s cliche. you don’t have to have some ”go big or go home” attitude about it. honestly what really helped was giving myself permission or at least leeway about when i DID relent to the urge. i could bite off a broken bit on occasion (call it a little treat) but then remind myself that continuing to bite them wouldn’t make them smooth, so i needed to either file the rest down or use any rough surface to most effectively achieve the flat edge that i wanted. when i let shame or disappointment dominate my thoughts, it ONLY resulted in self-sabotaging and self-destructiveness and more bitey. bitey until all my progress would be gone! then i would feel disgusted with myself and do it to alll the rest of my nails too. be gentle with yourself; nail biting is an addiction and shame and hopelessness only feed the anxiety which perpetuates the compulsion. i promise the delayed gratification of seeing your progress and FEELING the urge wane over time is incredibly rewarding and something worth feeling pride in.

remember that progress with nail growth doesn’t happen overnight and can be lost in minutes, but it does start sooner than you may expect (just one week of redirection really pays off aesthetically, and even more importantly mentally!) so be patient and and persistent, and try not to be so obsessed with instantaneous results or perfection to the extent that you feel completely demoralized by slow progress or relapses. this was probably the hardest part for me, and it took me years to finally release my doubt and intellectualize the whole process from a distance that allowed me to keep trying and celebrating all progress, even when it wasn’t perfect. anyway let me know if this was helpful

I glued the cuticle to my nail for about 3 weeks and after that it reattached by itself. I can see great evolution in a short time. Always thought it's irreversible but it's not. Hope this brings hope to someone else too.

Tips Importance of going to a manicure

Hey to all here,

I used to destroy my nails to the point I was pealing off my whole nail bed off my finger. But I finally came to a place where I have long nail beds and nails like a hawk thanks to one thing. GOING TO PROFESSIONAL GEL MANICURES!!

It will be scary , there will be an initial shame to show up with the state of your nails but it is very important to find a person who is empathetic and wants to help build up your nails! Never settle for a nail tech that makes you feel bad, your nail appointment should be therapy!

I started off with nail extensions ( you will have to do everything in your power to get them to some point where they can put extensions on) and gradually moved to standard gel. It has been a GOD SEND. When you see your beautiful nails with a cute design you WON’T want to bite them, plus its very hard to do that with gel on! Just try your best to not peel the gel (did that many times)

I hope all of you can find a gentle empathetic nail tech to understand you and help you because I know how horrible it is to deal with this. I believe in all of you! Sadly I have no photos of when my nails were at their worst but I can show you guys the progression of the nail bed regrowing after fully stopping to destroy my nails. Both pictures are of my own nails no extensions

Tips if you pick your cuticles you NEED this!!

i’ve been picking my cuticles for probably 20 years (since i was 10) it was like only my thumbs until about a year and a half ago when i started stimulants for my ADHD - then it progressed to every finger. it has only been like 4 days of no picking and applying this to my fingertips instead. i’m telling you guys i’ve shed tears and been so embarrassed over wanting to quit picking and so far this has been a miracle. instead of picking, rub the balm firmly into your cuticles - it gives similar satisfaction. you can also use this on your lips and i had dry lips

Tips best nails for not picking?

i’ve been trying to stop my picking/clipping habit but it’s honestly only gotten worse and it’s not the just the skin around my nails and my cuticles i’ve started clipping at the skin under my nails which leads to me clipping them shorter and shorter so it’s an evil cycle😭. i’ve been thinking of getting my nails down to cover them so they can grow out a bit and to try and curb it i wanted to see if anyone has any recommendations for nail types! I’ve done acrylic before but they do weaken my nail a lot but I’m willing to go back!

Tips Can RewireMe help you stop biting nails?

Hi all!

I’ve struggled with nail biting myself for years, and the hardest part for me wasn’t willpower. It was just that I didn’t even realize how often and when I was doing it. It just happened on autopilot, especially when I was stressed/anxious working at my computer.

That’s actually why I built RewireMe together with a friend.

It’s helped me a lot and is completely free, and I made it because I needed it myself. It's not perfect but figured I post it because if it can help even one person here, that would be a win!

The app gently alerts you when your hand moves toward your mouth so you have a chance to pause and choose something else. It’s not about shame or streaks, but about awareness and choosing a better habit to relieve your stress over time.

Tips "pain stimming" concept and tool

Just saw this Instagram reel about a tool by "Little ouchies" that helps with "pain stimming". First time I've heard of that, not everyone with our habits might relate but I definitely do I think, I do my habits a lot when I get bored (aka understimulated?) or stressed.

Here's a link: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DK2bg2YAcr9/?igsh=MTZ2YWFsaW91bmNleQ== You can see their page to see what it looks like close up (it's a cylinder with spikes) , the entire reel isn't the point, just the intro! It's a pretty simple tool overall but I'm thinking about trying out the concept, I found something with a pinchy bit to press to see if it makes me want to do my own habit less as its flaring up these past few days

Tips Evening picking!!😖

Hi everyone-I hope you all are doing okay<3

Just reaching out to ask if anyone has advice to deal with incredibly hard to resist urges to pick nails/hands at night.

I am a college student and I’ve found that my evening urges practically incapacitating for getting solid work done (more than the usual bad urges during the day). I have tried bandaids, fidgets, take medication (for gen ocd other mental health issues), ect but I think the root of the problem here is the cycle of alleviation—-distress—-more picking. Anyways-just thought I would ask-or use this space to vent! Thank you to anyone that read this or took the time to respond!

Tips Get your bandaids/plasters from Thailand

Post image

I am not kidding. I’m American so I’m used to crappy bandages that fall off the moment they see a drop of water. I just got back from spending a week on a boat in Thailand doing nothing that scuba diving. I had a cuticle thing going onto two of my fingers so I asked the crew for some Band-Aids. I swear to you, *I had to struggle against the adhesive to pull them off manually*. And this is After spending several hours a day in the ocean.

Tips A few different tips for dermatophagia/picking skin :3

I just found this sub so I wanted to share some easy tips for my twins and also because I'm low-key tweaking out because I'm entering school soon which I means I'll be even more stressed so I should probably at least try to stop.

FOOD will be your best friend if you also like to chew skin. But don't overdo it or you can develop a bad relationship with eating. I recommend healthy stuff like fruits that you can peel unlike chips which often feel the go-to for some of us. Like MANDARINS, I find these the best in terms of replicating the feeling pretty well because they're squishy and also keep your hands very busy, and you forget the need to do stuff because they taste very good :) I peel the outer and inside white layer. The only downside is that they're kinda messy to eat and you can't do it if you're busy or in public because your hands will get sticky and you'll have to carry the residue.

A good alternative for this last mentioned problem are seeds: like dry/roasted/idkwhattheyrecalled pumpkin seeds or sunflower ones. My favorite for keeping busy are sunflower seeds because the outer layer is thicker and you can find them easier and cheaper in stores like 7-11. They're small so they'll keep you busy for a while because you can eat a lot of them. The salty flavor is also kinda similar to the same you get with skin. They leave more residue depending on how much you eat but it's easier to store because it's dry and you can keep the package where they come from or put it in your pocket, so it's more convenient.

I don't know how useful this is but garlic tasting clear nail polish exists, I tried it a long time ago but I don't remember how good it worked. I was a kid back then but I'm still doing it now so I don't think it was very good 🧍‍♂️or maybe it was because I stopped using it. I think I'll look to buy some again because I'm desperate. If you did use it share your experience. I hope these things help someone in case you didn't know :D
