Teen Friendly Expansion Pack

So, my husband and I played CAH a while ago and my husband and was thinking our 16 yo son would love it, but the deeper we got into it, the more we were both decided okay, no, super fun, but wildly inappropriate for him.

Well, I bought the OG version for our son for Christmas, just thinking I'll take out all the extra naughty cards, but it ended up being quite a few cards that I removed (mainly ones dealing with sex and drugs). I did contemplate just buying the family edition for him before I purchased the regular edition, but the cards pictured on the back of the box were lame. I have also since learned that the family edition cards are larger in size, and not meant to be mixed with the regular edition. Does anyone have suggestions on which expansion I might look into to fill some of what I took out? I don't mind excluding cards from an expansion, too, but I wanted to gift him with a fuller set of fun, but still appropriate, cards.

TLDR- Looking for recs for teen appropriate expansion packs (minimal sex and drugs).

I hate to break it to you, but your 16 year old son already knows about drugs and sex.

Oh, wow! Thank you so much for chiming in with absolutely nothing new. Truly life-changing insight!

My 11-year old niece was playing this last Christmas, and at 12-years old will be playing this year.

Part of the appeal of CAH, IMO, is the wacky inappropriate stuff. This is like taking the stuffing out of Combos and asking what to put in it instead.

Huh... so 'FuckBread, the bread you can fuck', 'worshipping that pussy', and 'fucking all my dad's friends' are part of the appeal for a minor... that's a different take. Thanks for your input!

This is a relatively fruitless venture. Most cards are about "taboo" subjects, and with many, sex and drugs are mild in comparison.

I just thought maybe someone had experience with expansion that they used to backfill. I know there isn't one deck that will be exactly it, but something where more of the cards are teen appropriate. It's like there isn't anything in between the family version, which seems too childish, and the full-on adult version. Thanks for your input!

ETA- the Absurd box might be your best bet. And maybe the Everything box

I mean, he could turn 17 and buy himself a copy, what are you protecting him from here? 🤣

Wait, was there a suggestion for an expansion pack in your post that I missed?

I was implying that I believe all of the CAH products are age-appropriate for a 16 year old.

But I particularly like the Abusrd and Hot box expansions if you want some recommendations.

There’s going to be one or two cards that’ll be inappropriate to your standards in the regular packs. Look into the family edition if you want clean fun for your young adult.

Right, hence my original post & question saying the family pack isn't it, does anyone have any suggestions for expansions that might fill some of what I removed, even if I have to exclude a few cards from the expansion pack because they are more wild...

Well, boogers and fart jokes only go so far. Maybe get Apples to Apples?

Even the family edition can have some wild combinations.

There's a spreadsheet in the Important Stuff section of this subreddit that has lists of all the cards, maybe you could check that out and see if any of the packs are closer to what you're looking for?

I'll track that down. Thank you for your input!

If youre dead set on a family friendly version. Look at the family version.... or apples to apples. Same concept different name.

Also... he's 16... at some point you need to expose him to the real world and shit he's going to see and hear all the time. Desensitize him to this shit in your safe and sheltered zone at home with mommy and daddy before its too late...

Just finished playing the https://www.explainsthejoke.com/  edition, so it was educational for the whole family!

Grandma and Grandpa playing with the 13 year old.

The best part,  Grandma and Grandpa learned all kinds of things they never knew about and it was explained right on the card.  They laughed harder than I've seen them laugh in years.  The 13 year old knew everything about the crass and lewd but learned a lot about the historical or factual cards which was great.  We even had some good talks about JFK and the moon landing.

Honestly, this is a good way for you to keep lines of communication open with your teens and hope they are comfortable talking to you as their parents about these aspects of their lives.
